I went to the Stealer and bought 3qts of Heavy Duty 20w-50w HD oil, one original chrome filter and a qt of formula trans fluid ( The new stuff) and went home and did it. Just be carfull not to overtighten the primary ( I did) because it makes the engine vibrate under acceleration. It only takes 3 qts exact, dont believe what the manual says.

You really should at least get an owners manual...ASAP. Then the service manual.

I just did my 1k service on my 1200r, you really do need the service manual, you dont even know all of the maintenence requirements without the basic owners manual, oh i used mobil 1 20w50 V-twin and redline shockproof heavy, tranny shifts smooth, clutch engages and disengages well, and with the synthetics i dont mind going until the 5000 mile reccomendation

DEFINITELY get your manuals before you do anything...
To whet your appetite:

For 1K Service (and YOU'LL NEED THE MANUAL to accomplish these)...

Engine oil and filter - replace
Oil lines and brake system - inspect for leaks
Air cleaner - inspect
Tires - check pressure, inspect tread
Wheel spokes - check tightness
Transmission lubricant - replace
Clutch - check adjustment
Primary chain - check adjustment
Rear belt and sprockets - inspect, adjust belt
Throttle, brake, enrichener and clutch controls - check, adjust and lubricate
Jiffy stand - inspect and lubricate
Fuel valve, lines and fittings - inspect for leaks
Brake fluid - check levels and condition
Brake pads and discs - inspect for wear
Spark plugs - inspect
Electrical equipment and switches - check operation
Engine idle speed - check adjustment
Steering head bearings - adjust
Shock absorbers - inspect
Critical fasteners - check tightness
Road test - verify component and system functions

Good luck!

H-D Syn3 is a good way to go.
Otherwise, recommended oil "depends" (20W-50, 15W-40 or 10W-40)

For the transmission: Harley's Sport Trans Fluid (98854-96 in quarts)

And, you can't hear it enough:) - get the manuals!

yea the manuals are very high on my priority list. i do have the help and knowledge of 669sprink. so with that and hopefully soon a service manual we should be able to get all the necessary stuff done.

Well as long as he has a manual.

The primary clutch and chain inspection covers are prone to warping/leaking if unevenly torqued and stripping if over torqued, so AT LEAST get those torque specs.

Clutch adjustment is simple enough, but specific in it's requirements (resetting the clutch pack ramp screw).

Primary chain and secondary belt tensions are also specific with relatively small tolerence ranges.

It's all straightforward stuff, but having the manual handy is really worth the price. Besides, doing it yourself you're saving MORE than enough to pay for the manual a couple times over.

Can understand the desire to do your own wrenching and servicing, if you have the ability. However here in the UK the 1,000 mile service is free. Is that not the case there?

As others have said, you really need the service manual. But here is a handy maintenance log (it's posted as a "sticky" in the rubber mounted section): http://www.xlforum.net/dl/2004SportsterMaintenance.xls

240 for the labor???!!! my first maintinence took me about 2 1/2 hours with a trip to the hardware store, for an experienced mechanic with all parts on hand i couldnt imagine over an hour of work.
