I am going to try skydiving this spring and was curious as to
people's experiences...

Yes about five years ago I jumped out of an airplane in Perris Ca. Did the Accelerated Free-Fall Course and after 8 hours in a class was able to do the jump by myself. Didn't like the idea of jumping w/ some dude attached to my back side. It is the first class you take to get your license. Most exhilerating thing that I have ever done. Jump at 12,000 feet and open the chute at 5000'. Now you're on a swing 5000' above the earth, trying to find the landing zone and remember everything they told you earlier.
You never feel more alive.

LetMeGitThisStrait........

Your Gunna jump out of a perfectly good Airplane?

So like riddin' the So Cal freeways ain't enough of a death defining experience?

Rene, you don't need to jump out a plane unless it's on fire.
Save your money and go to Laughlin instead.

From A Young Age I Was A Member Of The Airborne Forces (uk) So I Did Plenty Of Take Offs, Plenty Of Flights, Plenty Of Jumps (you Will Love It ) But Not Many Landings, (in The Plane That Is), So Now I Have A Fear Of Flying Cos I Dont Like The Landings. Green On,go,go,go,go, Ahh Thats Better.

Do your homework, take the ground school, and go for it, Rene! Out of my 27 years in the military, nineteen of those were in aviation and I probably was the "doorman" helping over 10,000 parachutists exit my airplanes! I probably should've jumped once, but we were too low for that, so we rode it in...the parachustists that we jumped that day fared better than us! :D

Don't jump while releasing chaff...chaff and silk are NOT compatible!

I did a tandem jump. I swear that the ride up to 10,000' in the Cessna 172 was far scarier than jumping out of it.

I'd love to do it again, but my main fear would be navigating my way to the landing zone by myself. The jumping out and freefall part is easy and fun....the trying not to land in a tree, or on a busy highway, or in the middle of an alligator farm, etc., is the tough part.

13th January 2006, 13:45
Yup. In my 20s in the 1970s. Long before the fad of tandem jumps arrived. You went out alone. But I gave it up before I was 23.

(The USPA tried to get everyone to call it Sport Parachuting, instead of sky diving, when I was a member.)

When in the Army, I did something not called skydiving.

NOTE: the post 2 above refers to flares (as pictured) and not chaff. Chaff is little aluminum strips released in a burst.

Yep did 18 jumps when I was with the 82nd.You go up with lifes problems and after you land ( hopefully softly) those problems just seem so small. Its great makes you feel so alive,Go for it !!!

One of the best things I have ever done. Much more exhilarating than bunjee jumping. The free fall was incredible and very intense then after the chute opened it was the most relaxing / peaceful time I have ever felt. I have to agree with Sam though the plane I went up in was held together with alot of duct tape. I would not have gotten into the plane without a parachute, You are gonna love it

I've done it twice...both times were tandem jumps. If you're considering doing it, DO IT! With tandem, you get about 1 minute of free-fall then about a 10 minute parachute ride down. My second time, I went w/ a co-worker/buddy of mine (he has about 1300 jumps under his belt) and it was 10 times better than the first time! We climbed out of the plane and departed from the wing strut doing a flip. It was F'n awesome. I also got video/pics of both jumps....I'd recommend you do the same. I'm planning on going again w/ some friends this May.
Here's a condensed version of my last jump....(my buddy is the one chasing us out of the plane and joins us in the free-fall)

Yea, I have. For over 20 years, +1300 jumps. Do it. Or you will always regret it. It is the most exhilirating thing you will ever do and the adrenaline rush is out of this world. I have never found anything to compare to it. Do the tandem jump for your first jump, so you can enjoy it more and have fewer things to have to deal with. And get the video if offered, or you will regret it later. "skydivers know why the birds sing" ...Blue Skies,.....

The first time I jumped it was the closest in my life that I've ever been to having an orgasm and shitting my pants at the same time. If I could afford it with the four little one's at home I'd be doing it whenever possible. Go for it!

Now those of you that were refering to military service come on...really...I mean 32 feet per second? We were NOT skydiving...we were falling at a slower pace! :roflblack

A couple of times. Kinda' like Dusty, mine were back in the late 60's. Static line, no buddies, Cessna 195, surplus military 'chute. I had helped some friends, members of the school jump club, do some work on their airfield. In return for my volunteer help they insisted I accept free training and make a jump. The jump and subsequent ride down were wonderful, the last few minutes of the plane ride as my buddy, the pilot, lined up on the field at altitude were terrrifying! Made my only two jumps that day.

13th January 2006, 16:21
Yes I have, and wanna do it again!

First jump was in college - off a static line attached to a Cessna. Had to balance on a little tiny step while grabbing a wing spar, get in position, and then let go - woo hoo!

AZ has a couple of sky dive hot spots and we're trying to get a group of first-timers together to head out to one for the day. Hmmmm... I think I need to follow up on that! Too much talking and not enough doing!

I think Ole's description is the best yet!:clap Hopefully, with experience, the second feeling diminishes while the other increases! With only two jumps, I never found out. That climbing out on the strut business definitely gets your heart rate up.

there is a thrill associated with the obvious fear (adrenaline rush) with that possible exception I'd never do it again. I did some paradrops from a blackhawk helicopter at about 1500 ft. It's a static line jump so there is very little "free fall" and it caused me, a helicopter repairmen, much consternation, to jump from my perfectly flyable airplane. I was able to see the helicopter until the canopy inflated and that also scared me because I could hear the bird, but not see it "was it falling on top of me...?" there were far too many things to worry about to actually enjoy the brief fall. Then there was the less than pleasant landing speed you can count on with standard military nylon parachutes, friggin hurts, even when you land right and roll, it's more strain on my body than I care to be subjected to unnecessarily. any way, I did it

Young friend of mine I'll call Willard [cause that's his name] Sky jumped about ten years ago. From then till last fall when he and his wife flew to Penn, he had a record of 1 takeoff and 0 landings in an airplane. He could honestly tell people that the only airplane he was ever in, he jumped out of. He really didn't really want to fly to Penn and spoil his record, but wife won. :roflblack

I've been once before; it was a tandem from a Twin Otter at 12,5. I was scared :censorless but loved every second of it. Once I get some discretionary funds (after my 1200 conversion), I want to go and get my AFF so I can go and do something wholly irrational whenever I want (like riding wasn't irrational enough). Maybe even try a HALO jump (after a few hundreds jumps, of course).

I did it once, it was a tandem jump. My sister took me for a Christmas gift and we went that spring. The took pics & a video, it was really cool. The scariest part was in the plane, I was next to a big door in the plane and the door opened, prior to me being strapped to the guy, and the plane tilted with the door open so that if I wasn't holding the seat in front of me I would have slid right out, no chute, no instructor.

Why, for the love of living, would you leave a perfectly good airplane? I can see skydiving if the wings, engine, or other essential parts fell off the plane and the alternative was a "hard landing," but to jump without being pushed out makes no sense to me.

Now I think I'll go do something sane, like jump 15 school buses on my harley.

Nothing like that feeling as the t-10 pops open and starts to fill with air, snatched from the jaws of death, by some nylon.

He was just a rookie trooper and he surely shook with fright
He checked off his equipment and made sure his pack was tight;
He had to sit and listen to those awful engines roar,
"You ain't gonna jump no more!"
Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die,
Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die,
Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die,
He ain't gonna jump no more!
"Is everybody happy?" cried the Sergeant looking up,
Our Hero feebly answered "Yes," and then they stood him up;
He jumped into the icy blast, his static line unhooked,
And he ain't gonna jump no more.
Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die,
Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die,
Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die,
He ain't gonna jump no more!
He counted long, he counted loud, he waited for the shock,
He felt the winds, he felt the clouds, he felt the awful drop,
He yanked the chord, the silk spilled out and wrapped around his legs,
And he ain't gonna jump no more.
Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die,
Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die,
Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die,
He ain't gonna jump no more!
The risers wrapped around his neck, connectors cracked his dome,
Suspension lines were tied in knots around his skinny bones;
The canopy became his shroud; he hurtled to the ground.
And he ain't gonna jump no more.
Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die,
Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die,
Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die,
He ain't gonna jump no more!
The days he'd lived and loved and laughed kept running through his mind,
He thought about the girl back home, the one he'd left behind;
He thought about the medicals and wondered what they'd find,
And he ain't gonna jump no more.
Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die,
Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die,
Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die,
He ain't gonna jump no more!
The ambulance was on the spot, the jeeps were running wild,
The medics jumped and screamed with glee, rolled up their sleeves and smiled,
For it had been a week or more since last a 'chute had failed,
And he ain't gonna jump no more.
Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die,
Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die,
Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die,
He ain't gonna jump no more!
He hit the ground, the sound was "Splat!," his blood went spurting high,
His comrades then were heard to say: "A hell of a way to die!"
He lay there rolling round in the welter of his gore,
And he ain't gonna jump no more.
Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die,
Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die,
Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die,
He ain't gonna jump no more!
(slowly, solemnly)

There was blood upon the risers, there were brains upon the chute,
Intestines were a'dangling from his Paratrooper suit,
He was a mess, they picked him up, and poured him from his boots,
And he ain't gonna jump no more
Gory, gory, what a hell of way to die,
Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die,
Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die,
He ain't gonna jump no more!
The chorus can also be sung in this 'uncensored' version:

Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die
With a rifle up your ass and a bullet in your eye
Gory, gory what a hell of a way to die
When your balls hang lower then your paratrooper boots
Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die
With a rifle in your hand, and you're falling through the sky
Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die
He ain't gonna jump no more!
The final chorus is (rarely) changed alternately to:

(solemly sing)

They placed him in a blanket, then they laid his soul to rest
They notified his next of kin; his funeral was the best
And on his monument of stone they scribed this little verse:
He ain't gonna jump no more
Gory, Gory, what a helluva way to die
Gory, Gory, what a helluva way to die
Gory, Gory, what a helluva way to die
He ain't, gonna jump, no more...
Or:

Beautiful streamer please open for me
Blue skies above me and no canopy
I counted ten thousand, waited too long
Reached for my ripcord and the handle was gone
Gory, Gory, what a helluva way to die
Gory, Gory, what a helluva way to die
Gory, Gory, what a helluva way to die
He ain't, gonna jump, no more...

I did it once in '81 or '82. At the time I had a g/f who had jumped many times, and broke several vertebrae. Her brother and his wife also jumped. They gave me the ground school, but I didn't practice my PLFs (parachute landing falls) enough. So when I jumped, under a T-10, I landed wrong and broke my right ankle. I still have two screws in it, one doc took out the other nine and a plate a year after the first doc put them in.

http://xlforum.net/photopost/data/500/my_nine_screws_with_one_plate.jpg

All this took place in Casper, Wy. It wouldn't have been so bad to break my ankle, but did I have to land in the cactus??? :wonderlan

HALO is a rush, but you really haven't lived till you do a low level jungle insertion when it's pitch black.
For the normal jumps, we just couldn't wait to get out of those junkwagon airforce planes they put us in. People ask, why would you jump out of a perfectly good airplane? My answer, I've never been inside a perfectly good airplane...

Problems maybe, but there is no feeling like when your 3 year old jumps into your arms , after a bad day at work and forces you to smile, or when your five year old draws a picture for your desk at work, or when your ten year old bicycles one into the goal.

I have to agree with you there they defiantly are problems and are the cause of allot of issues but there is nothing like having them around, you just have to keep in mind that if you kill them there won't be any grand kids to spoil later :doh

Yeah, I jumped about 13 years ago, static line jump from around 3500 ft.from a little Cessna. Had to climb out and hang from the wing strut at 120 mph and wait for the jump master to give you the sign to let go. It was one of the most awsome feelings I've ever experienced. Do it, you will love it! Hell, I still get excited talking about it. My only regret is that I never did it again.

I have been out the door so many times it just got to be second nature after awhile, not to mention the hundreds of drops from the heli to the water while in the USCG.
You will love it and hate it all at once the first time out the door, but you will have fun.

Jumped from 13,500 feet into what looked like a painting of Homestead,fl. I screamed like a little bitch for about 10 seconds. Once adjusted it was awesome. Full 60 seconds of free fall. Scariest part was pulling the chute open. You go from 120mph to about 30 in about 1/2 second. Felt like I was gonna slip through the straps. Lots of fun tho - cant wait to do it again.

Yeh...used to jump at Taft and do Demos around SoCal. Flew a twin Beech with "Spike" out of Van Nuys. It was Good Times, we were heros. :wonderlan

Did it a few times in the 70's. The airstrip is now a Costco in Issaquah Wa. My then girlfriend's last jump had her landing with a barbwire fence between her legs. Minor injury...

I would like to learn how to paraglide and maybe get one of those with a motor. There is someone who flys over my city all the time in their motorized paraglider and I think that would be the coolest ride of all.

I have one question about the safety of military aircraft.

If the military aircraft are so safe how come the pilots get paid a whole lot more to stay in them, then the paratroopers get paid to jump out of them?? Doesn't the more dangerous job usually get more pay????

Well I have read everyone's responses and thought I would share mine as well. I went skydiving once. I would go again but I don't think I could match the fun experience I had. You see, I didn't just go skydiving in a farm field. I went skydiving over the Alps in Switzerland!!!
It was awesome!

Many, Many jumps. Loved every one of them, Even the scarey ones. Made a deal with the wife. Traded the chute for the bike. Never regretted it. The old parachute is still in the attic though. Maybe one day......

Hey Bert...I got paid $55.00 a month for jump pay........Even then it wasn't a whole lot of money.

Does anyone know what they pay now?

Pay is $150 for static line I cant remember if MFF gets any different. Over 500 static line, combat equipment, night, mass tac, admin...its all good. Over 65 freefall, Raeford, NC; Parris, CA, Wallace, NC; Ohau, HI; MRVS, MO; Phnom Phen, Cambodia. Best Freefall at 17k, hop & pop, sunset, flip flops and shorts..... Froze my a$$ off and numb from sitting in the harness so long but incredible!

Wife and I both did the tandem jump. She went up in a plane full of guys, me a plane full of girls. We both had a blast, though wife's tape shows a look of pure terror you just can't replicate in the movies. I have to say, I get more rush from my bike or Jeep. Both last longer and cost far less per minute, but I'd always wanted to try it and now I have. I'd recommend you give it a go!

The worst jump I ever did was about 250 miles north of Fairbanks Alaska. We left Hunter Army Airfield Georgia at about 80 degrees....many many hours later the temp in the C140 was about 20 below...same as outside.....As we got further along and closer to Alaska the pilot kept lowering the temp in the troop area and we kept putting on our arctic gear....all the way to the Mickey Mouse boots.....We had to jump into 30 below zero weather......It was miserable....

did a tandem jump a 6 or so years back just before i got married. and like others have said i think that the little plane ride up was worse than the fall.

the freefall, kinda cool

the parachute drop the best floating down and being able to see everything, awesome
