I was thinking about a set of chrome tappet covers. Just wondering how much is envolved in removing a stock set, and replacing with a new chrome set.

Looks like the pushrod tubes need to be removed.

BTW, are these commonly called 'lifter blocks' ?

Thanks,
Ron

Must remove heads to get pushrod tubes off. I have a set as well. Just waiting to get a set of 10.5 to 1 pistons to put in this winter. Once I am ready for that the covers will go on too.

Thanks Barry ...

I think I will pass on buying these until I spring for a set of nallin heads.

You do not have to remove the heads to remove the pushrod tubes, just remove the rocker covers. Then pull out the pushrods. Pull the lifter blocks and push the tubes up into the heads, put in the new lifter blocks and then reassemble everything. One tip is to make sure both valves are closed on the cylinder you are working on before removing the lower rocker assembly. Other than that, follow the service manual.

Shu, the 04's have gaskets under the cover and the tubes have o-rings and are tight in between the head and block. I don't think you could get the gasket back in with the 2 sets of o-rings all at the same time. I understand the method you propose but don't know if it would be to easy to do. I'd like to know if anyone does do it though.

I understand your concern, but once the pushrods are pulled out (which only involves removing the lower rocker plate, you can carefully push the pushrod tubes up into the head and then slide the bottom out and then pull the tubes out of the heads. Even with the slight design change on teh '04 and '05's I still would never pull the head off to do this job. To pull the heads you are just adding a lot of time to the job, not to mention parts, clean up, etc. Plus, anytime you pull the head, you really should be replacing the cylinder base gaskets. IMO leave the heads, take your time and these will go right on like I described earlier. One other tip...once you have it all apart and you are installing the pushrod tubes and o-rings, etc.....clean up all the oil off the chrome parts with something like Windex. Completely oil free chrome to rubber o-ring seals stay leak free:)

I should have mentioned that I had .005 taken off the heads and am running a .025 head gasket. .030 less space. My tubes went back on very tight when I put the heads back on. Maybe it's just me but I thought it would be too tight.

Well, I really don't need these (MSRP is $59.95 from H-D)

The Ebay bid was so low, I just had to bid on them. I won the bid for $2.97! :clap

Shipping is $7.00, so I get them to the door for $9.97 (brand new in the box)

TSI Harley, the same company that auctions the Sportster 'Sport' shocks is the seller.

Now, I guess I will just wait till I do the Nallin Stage 2 heads to install these. Don't know when that's going to be.

Got mine from them too. I think I paid 17.50 with shipping for mine. Still a good deal.

Barry ...

Well, I feel better now, since I won the bid on the "Sport" shocks auction for $203.50

That's higher than most had paid for theres from TSI. I think the last set sold for about $160.

Oh Well ....
