View Full Version : Oil pressure guage question

I'm wanting to add an oil pressure guage. I've been looking at a couple of the kits that are availiable and I'm wondering where/how you tie the guage line into the oil system. Seems like I could save some coin by buying the parts individually as opposed to the Ness kit. Plus, the Ness kit would look a little too fancy on my bike.
Thanks,
Eric

If you go to my gallery and zoom in on the pic. of the right side of my engine, you'll see the oil gauge on the rear cylinder rockerbox, drilled a hole, teflon taped it and screwed it right in, real simple.

That looks like a good way to mount the guage, but where do you tap the guage into the oil system? At the pressure switch?

It's mechanical; the oil in the rockerbox goes directly into the gauge, giving you the pressure reading.

Color me possibly uninformed, but unless you install the pressure gauge by tapping into an oil galley, you won't be reading actual oil pressure.

Three things:

First, the usual motorcycle oil pressure hauges are not very practical. They read either up to 60 or up to 100 psi. Too high. Not enough accuracy down low where you want it. Go to an industrial supply shop and buy one that reads only up to 30 psi, and that has the connector on the bottom.

Second, the best place to hook up is right off the oil pump output. Put a T connection in there.

Third, get a liquid [oil] filled gauge. They handle vibration better.

On newer bikes there is a plugged hole in the front edge of the cam cover. I believe there is Oil Pressure at that point. You can unscrew the plug, install your line and run it up the right down tube or down the lower frame tube and then mount the guage anywhere you want. I see a lot of guage mounts that bolt to the rocker cover bolts.

Sporties do not carry much OP, so Mick's suggestion is a great one. Definately go that route if you decide you really need one.

just checked 2002 service manual 10-17psi @2500rpm 7-12psi @1000rpm.

Like mick said with pressures that low why buy one of those 60 or 100psi. gauges. You could'nt hardly get a good reading.

the oil pressure for an 04 model is
7 - 12 psi @ idle (950 -1050 rpm)
10 - 17 psi @ 2500rpm

for an oil pressure test, the guage is screwed in place of the oil pressure switch.
