View Full Version : Sportster at BeaverRun Roadcourse
MTPockets00 28th April 2008, 02:49 Hi all. I just wanted to share my riding exp at the BeaverRun track near Pittsburgh Pa. Today i took my total stock 04 883 ( except for the flaming footpegs that was on it when i got it) to the track. As i took to the tech center to get inspected they were suprised to see a sportster show up. After a few snickers and head turns i was instructed to put more duct tape on to cover the reflectors and it would pass. I preped the bike the night before by removing mirrors, turn signal lens and lamps. tape the headlight and tail light, and remove the fuse so the tape didnt melt to the light. Ive never been on a track before and only had the sportster a month. It handled well with the stock suspension and accelerated smoothly through the turns.Shifting was not a strong point but I managed to get clocked on the front stretch at 87 mph. I know I turned alot of heads when they saw a sportster out doing laps. I got off to a slow start, never being on a track before, but after a few sessions I had a few fellows complement me on how hard i made it for them to pass cause the 883 had them in the turns. I own an SV650 and never had to the track, . I know the SV is better suited to the track but the ride I got out of the sportster was priceless. ( Oh btw the SV is forsale...) I plan to make a few more track days and I hope to see other sportsters show up. :tour It is all about the ride! Oh i have a pick of me and the 883 at the track in the gallery.
XL4me 28th April 2008, 03:05 COOL !!!! Never have I thought about taking my Sporty on a track, but I have ALWAYS wanted to do a trackday on "their" rented Ducati (or some other such bike).
That's Absofreakin'lutely COOL !!!!!!!!!!
L.B. 28th April 2008, 10:44 Sounds like a fun day! I signed up for a track day on my Sportster some time ago, but they didn't have enough people sign up, so it got cancled.
I believe I'd try the SV on the track if I had one though...
Congrats!

Sounds like a lot of fun! I've always wanted to do that.
I live about 35 miles from Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn Michigan (it's a NASCAR superspeedway) One of my favorite fantasies is to somehow finangle getting out there on my bike......

ReddTigger 27th May 2008, 22:19 are you required to run racing leathers or can you get away with chaps and a leather jacket ?

Racing leathers and some textile type gear. (Cortech and denier ballistic). If they are 2 piece they need to be able to zip together. The low end Firstgear or Tourmasters are not good. They do make a higher end that is acceptable.
Leather boots that cover the ankles and leather gauntlet style gloves that cover wrist. Full face helmet thats dot approved and not damaged.

Thanks for the info. Nothing like showing up at the track and being turned away.
averagewhiteboy 28th May 2008, 07:44 Wow. Track day for a bike is ALOT different than a car. For a car you need a helmet. lol. For a bike you need to hit up your local shop wit ha credit card with 7 grand on it to even participate. Damn.. lol.
turn8a 28th May 2008, 15:19 track day on the sportster cool !! What type of lap times were you turning?

you can get a set of off the rack leathers for a decent price at some places , also check out some of the racing web sites racers are always selling used leathers in good shape fairly cheap . If you ever crashed a bike at race speed it would have been money well spent.
CT1200 29th May 2008, 15:43 This is how newenough.com got started, selling used race leathers, cheap.
Stephen Lowry 11th January 2009, 20:14 That was very cool...........................
bigjnsa 11th January 2009, 20:26 Here in April, I will be taking the RideSmart road course class. There are two tracks we Texans can go to, one in Fort Worth and the second in College Station. For $35, you can have one of the instructors behind you with a digital camera filming and they give you a DVD at the end of the day.
oldironnow 26th January 2009, 17:52 Took my 883R to the big track at Willow Springs last November. (Buell sponsored Inside Pass program) Met my brother with his Yamaha R6. The Streets of Willow track would be better suited to its power level. Had a great time, and I love this bike on or off the track.
