Good job. Might be the first with the Buell FI, but not the first FI Sporty. Back in the mid 90s there was a throttle body injection setup in the aftermarket. The one I witnessed beat me by friggin 6/10 of a horse at the Daytona dyno shootout in 97. And to add to it I figured I was jetted too rich when I saw my power go down as the motor heated on my 3 pulls. A jet or 2 leaner and I damn sure would have beat that damn 6/10 of a friggin horse. I was thinking that the FI should have beat me by a lot more though. Their heads had way more work in them, hell, I was running stock 1200 heads with home brewed domed pistons. But not to short ya, that if a fine bike you have there. Had mine in the mags in mid 90s a few times. All you gotta do is send pics and a description to all the mags. A few times if that is what it takes. Be persistant.

Congrats on finishing the bike. Looks Great! Did you use the Buell wiring harness and stock computer? I bought a Buell X-1 throttle body, injectors, and manifold last year off ebay to try to adapt to my '04 custom. Just haven't got that far yet.

Wow, I don't know a whole lot about all that technical stuff. But I do know what looks good to the eye, and I love that sporty! Way to go!

Really like the front fender, the bars, and the tank. Nice work, and as suggested earlier - please give us more pics of it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mine was called the world's quickest, stock head bolt on parts Sporty(class rules). I retired from dragracing with that title and nobody upped the bar that I know of. Sure would like to see your FI Sporty at a dragstrip. wink, wink. I'm thinking it might run pretty good.

Sorry about the lack of photos, but the last time I tried to post they wouldn't take. To answer one of the questions, I didn't run the factory wiring harness, it wouldn't work with the controls that I was using along with the lights. I had a wiring harness made from wire plus. It uses new circuits and has built in load equilizers to run the lights, ignition and the other do dads. Then I had to take the Buell harness and rip it apart taking the components and the Race ECM to wire everything else. The company had never done this type of wiring and nobody else besides buell had tried it either. Well, nobody that I could find. So I took the two harnesses along with the Power Commander, Dokota Digital, and after drilling into a set of brand new Bassani exhaust to mount the oxygen sensor, I had made my own wiring diagram. This was the most difficult part of this project. When I first had the bike working about two years ago before I did all the "pretty" work I was using stock buell controls and the wiring harness. It took me quite a few weeks, one to figure out the diagrams how to splice them together and another trying to fit it to the bike. I think the hardest thing was hiding everything to get that clean look. Buell has sso many sensors! Air fuel, oxygen, bank angle, bypass neutral switch, side strand, fuel injectors, throttle body, well you get the picture. The one thing I can say is that Wire plus's harness is awesome. One little relay box about 1 inch by 2 inches, you have to solder everything your self, strictly custom building, but very compact and hide able. Cost is @ $500.00 plus shipping kind of pricey since a factory harness cast @ $200.00 and I had to use both. Hopefully these pics will upload as well.

really nice work. Like the stretch and rake. Well balanced design and the color is really vibrant. Put pics on www.snapfish.com then link them to site. best way to go. I really would like to see large pictures from more angles. Where are you guys in Germany? I lived in HD for 5 years and 8 years in Wiesbaden.

Question about the FI. Does it offer any performance gains to justify the 1000 dollars you spent or is just really cool to have?

I haven't had the time to post anything latley, but I want to answer one of the questions that I had.

Is FI better than carbs, due to the amount of work, money and time?

I have thought about this subject everytime I was working on this bike. Usually the question was the same Is this all worth it? As far as the project, YES! The first time that I rode a buell X-1 I fell in love and that is why I wanted to do this to a Sporty. There are benefits and downfalls. and I am going to list them below.

BENEFITS

More torque
Less time waiting for the bike to warm up. Basically get on wait for the fuel pump to cycle and off you go.
Bike runs better, I was always having problems with the carb burbing. rejetted no fix, new pipes, didn't help. I foresaw alot of money being spent to fix this problem and time getting the operation just right.
Plug and play. I have a problem with the bike, I take it in or hook it to the home computer and diagnois the problem. No more tweaking this and that.
Better fuel mileage.

Downfalls

Complicated setup, alot of wiring and more wiring. If you are trying to get a clean no wire look use a carb.
Carbs are simple to work on, fuel injection is complicated I am now dependant on a computer to diagnois problems. For example I had a fuel injector short out. I couldn't figure out what was wrong, I ended up taking it to the dealer and 100.00 and five minutes later I had to purchase a new injector.
Fowling sparkplugs with a carb too lean or too rich means I turn a screw and fix that problem. I had to install a power commander to fix this problem and then take it to a shop to get it tuned. Not doing that and it was fouling sparkplugs constantly. You do however, have a idle adjustment on the fuel injection, but it doesn't help the p[roblem very much.

Either way this is only my opinion, I know alot of carb guys are in disagreement right now, but that is your opinion. I like the FI, but I wish it wasn't so complicated and relied on a computer. My next project that I am planning now, will have a carb, but if I didn't have to do all the wiring, FI for sure.

Awesome bike and awesome work, man ! Can you tell us a bit about fitting the pump in a custom tank ? would there be a way to have the bike working with an external pump, placed lower in the bike so that it could be fed by gravity and then push the fuel to the injectors (been thinking about that "problem" for a while...

Back in the mid 90s there was a throttle body injection setup in the aftermarket.
I recall one or two, one was made by Whitek (http://www.whitek.com/). There was another one too, but the name escapes me. There are so many options now compared to 10 years ago.

I like the paint color too. The bike looks awesome. Anything can be done with enough time and persistence.

anyone happen to know what years/models the buells had f.i. I'm looking to start a sporty project in the fairly near future, and FI sure would be a nice touch. Also, could you adapt the f.i. onto a rubber mounted sporty?

Nice work on the bike! Too bad you finished it right as the factory decided to make a FI Sporty from the factory. But cobbling together all the different parts into a custom ride that runs is what customizing is all about, good on ya, mate!
