OK. Before you jump me... I just got my 04 XL1200R (used) and I don't have an owner's manual or a service manual - both both are ordered as of today. I've spent about a half-hour searching this forum for an answer to this very basic question and I got close - just want to verify the info...

It looks like the lower hose from the oil tank runs down under the engine and is attached to a plastic clip by a radiator-hose type clamp. This clip hooks to the lower frame member and easily comes off. Is this the drain?

Thanks!

My XB9S is simpler - nice drain plug under the swingarm - easy to get to.

Hey Tim, thats it... and, if you do access the downloads one way or another there is a VERY good video that describes oil changes to the TEE!

That's what I found during a search and why I was trying to access the downloads and failed.

Thanks! XL Forum membership is probably the way to go....

I recently bought the Fix my hog video for sporsters. I have the manual and its all you need but the videos are nice. You get to see them do it exactly and they have lots of time saving tips. Worth the $40 for the video.

One more question about oil changes:

Do you re-use the radiator-style clamp on the end of the oil drain hose or do you replace it with a new one?

Tim

reuse it unless it won't tighten for some reason

OK. Thanks. Promise to stop asking these basic questions when my svc manual gets here - ships tomorrow.

is this what they are talking about on page 111 of the 06 owner's manual, under the caution highlight "detach frame clip from frame tube.loosen worm clamp and and remove drain hose from frame clip.allow a small amount of oil to flow from hose before reconnection.this action removes air from the drain hose and reduces the possibility of oil pump cavitation"this is not in service manual.what are they talking about here? no picture to explain, are they saying make sure drain hose is full of oil?

Yes. "bleeding" the air from the drain hose.
After you refill the oil tank.
