View Full Version : Poll: How Tall are You?
ZenBiker 26th January 2006, 23:19 This may have been done before but I couldn't find it...
If you ride a Sportster, either 883 or 1200, then I would like to get a feel for how tall you are and what you have done to your sporty to accomodate your height either way.
As for myself, I am 6'3" and I ride my 883 and am relatively comfortable on it though I am going to get myself a set of forward controls ASAP and possibly, eventually, get the suspension raised (and upgraded) a bit. I also have a Mustang Vintage Solo Wide seat (which I love, even the look of it!!).
So how tall are you and what have you done to your sporty to accomodate your height?
FSZEKE302 26th January 2006, 23:26 I'm damn sure tall enough!
O.k. I'm 5'8". Had an altitude misunderstanding with ground when stopped. Went with 12.5" progressive 412s [stock called 13.5, actually 13.25] lowered forks 1" with race tech springs. Put forward controls on cause of a nerve in my left leg that ached with originals. Good to go now. :clap
rx3732 26th January 2006, 23:26 Just under 6'. Havent done anything to the bike to "accomodate" my height. My bike fits me pretty good. ('06 883 Custom)
engine 26th January 2006, 23:46 I think I'm like 5'7" or something. I dropped my suspension as low as I can without going with rigid struts. 11" Progressive shocks and .75" front spring drop, Bare Bones seat. I measured my seat height at about 24" or so...
ed_in_az 26th January 2006, 23:51 Oh boy, this poll should be as much fun to follow as my "what color ..." one.:clap
I'm 5'8", was 5'9", but I think I shrunk, or my daughter grew. She's getting real close to my height and I told her to stop growing. My son can be taller than me, but not my little princess.:laugh
My '03 standard was just a little too tall with the Mustang 14" vintage seat. I had to scoot up to the tank to flatfoot. I had planned on going an inch down on new shocks.
My '05 standard sags, too much even. I've got a LePera seat which is low. I can even bend my knees.:D In fact I've got stock height progressive springs and shocks to put on someday.
Did I mention the color black rocks!
debster 26th January 2006, 23:55 5'4", 883 Hugger, which fit perfect until I put on the Mustang seat. Haven't done it yet, but I'm just gonna get boots with a little thicker soles. That should cover it!
GOTWA 27th January 2006, 00:01 I'm 5'11" but it isn't height that is the real issue, it is inseam. I've got giraffe legs, 36" inseam.
I love my mids for the feeling of control they give me. And the stock mounting placement of forwards put my legs in an odd cant anyway and are totally uncomfortable.
The only thing I really did to accomodate my height was to make and add on a highway bar that allows my legs to stretch out much further than forwards or highway pegs do.

jaws 27th January 2006, 00:15 6'4'' Nada..stock seat no forwards.. :D
BlueSnBikes 27th January 2006, 00:15 6', 883XL/C, 13.5" Progressive shocks & springs, forward controls. Never had middies but don't think I would like the riding position with my height.
Peace,
Darrin
t.c. Johnson 27th January 2006, 00:17 I'm 5'10" but my legs start at my neck.
And I drag my knuckles when I walk.
Sporty fits me fine.
All bikes fit me fine.
It's clothes that don't.
Ride Neked!
Sportster Girl 27th January 2006, 00:18 5'2" shortster.
The Mustang seat bumped me up a little too, but I just used it as an excuse to buy bitchin' new higher heeled riding boots too Debster! ;)
KC_Sporty_Gal 27th January 2006, 00:33 I am 5' 5". Using stock stocks and a mustang wide vintage solo seat. I can easily put both feet on the ground with regular soled boots.
Jhard206 27th January 2006, 00:33 about 5'10" and I fit my 05 standard just fine. Haven't done anything to it yet besides pay taxes and am considering a new seat and shocks come spring. Might even raise it a little.
tstoeckel 27th January 2006, 00:41 I'm 6'-2" with forward controls. I recently replaced the stock seat with a Mustang Wide Vintage Super Touring. This definitely raised me a bit as I can no longer put my feet down flat on the ground without shifting forward a little but it's much more comfy. I was always leaning forward a little with the stock drag bars (and more so with the new seat) so I also replaced the handlebars to get myself into a nice upright position. I'm still experimenting to get it all dialed in.
rider1951 27th January 2006, 00:44 I'm 5' 7 3/4" tall with a 31" inseam. I have a Mustang Vinyage Wide seat and 12 1/2" 412s on my Custom. I have no problems touching the ground and would like to move the forward controls a little farther out.
dooley 27th January 2006, 00:44 6`1`` 04 1200R
Yeah,I`m tall,but I have a weird body type....Only a 30`` inseam.
I`m all upper body,so I dont really need the forward controls.
The only thing I`ve done to accomodate this is the Mustang Daytripper seat.
It wasnt why I bought it,but a fringe benefit(other than being more comfortable than the horrid stocker)is that it lets me sit farther back from the bars a bit.
I think it also drops the seat height some, but I never measured it.
santansporty 27th January 2006, 00:59 5'3" with forward controls (mids feel funny to me) used to flat foot until I put on the mustang wide vintage seat... will have to get new soles on the boots as soon as possible! :chop
Tedeburn 27th January 2006, 01:00 6'2" 36" inseam. Have forward's on my 02 with no real problems. But I am looking at extended forward controles to streach my legs out just a little more
ForensicSgt 27th January 2006, 01:27 6'1".....Sporty is bone stock except for the pillowtop seat and sissy bar.
jaxs1984 27th January 2006, 01:32 I'm about 5'6 and the 883 Low fits like a glove :) I'm can put my feet flat foot at stops. I really wanted the custom but couldn't reach the forward controls or the ground.
shortysporty05 27th January 2006, 01:34 5'1".
'05 1200xl. Corbin close solo seat $550.00
new 2" heeled boots $100.00
forks lowered $150.00
being able to reach :priceless :clap :clap :clap
(all prices are approx.)
rottenralph 27th January 2006, 01:37 I am 6' and I am happy. Bike fits fine because I adjusted it till it was right for me. Love my sporty.
MNewYork 27th January 2006, 01:39 I'm 5' 7" . 883 Low fits perfectly.
kmorris913 27th January 2006, 01:41 I'm 5'5" and I haven't done anything to my bike. It is a 883low so there isn't much, IMO, that needs to be done. I will get highway pegs this spring to give my knees another position to ride in. Staying in one position for a long time makes my knees very unhappy.
Predator 27th January 2006, 02:21 5'9 - 32" inseam and I have trouble putting my feet flat. Forwards are comfy though.
I rode alot of dirt bikes so being able to touch the ground with both feet isn't important to me.
santansporty 27th January 2006, 02:21 As for myself, I am 6'3" and I ride my 883 and am relatively comfortable on it though I am going to get myself a set of forward controls ASAP and possibly, eventually, get the suspension raised (and upgraded) a bit. of it!!).
My nephew is thinking of a Kawasaki sportbike, and I am steering him towards a sporty. He is 6'4'' or 6'5'' I think... Do you think he would be comfortable enough if he is even taller? And which sporty would fit him the best?
Thanks,
JJ
Randum77 27th January 2006, 02:31 I am 6 foot. I have a 1200c. It has forward controls on it. The seat is a Lepera Daytona Sport. When i sit on the bike, the forward controls feel like they are normal controls. :laugh I sometime switch up to the rear passenger pegs when going on long hauls or on the highway doing 75+. Looks retarded, but i don't give a crap. It's comfortable as heck to me.
GOTWA 27th January 2006, 03:30 My nephew is thinking of a Kawasaki sportbike, and I am steering him towards a sporty. He is 6'4'' or 6'5'' I think... Do you think he would be comfortable enough if he is even taller? And which sporty would fit him the best?

I'd steer him toward the 883 Std or the R models just for the height of them. Well, and he may appreciate the styling more if he's leaning toward sport bikes. But I would advise him to sit on a C model to get a feel for the forward controls. Like I said earlier, they just put my legs at an awkward position. That way he'll have an idea if wants to drop the coin on installing forwards.
You might also have check out the new Buell Ullysess. Much taller and longer than other Buells.
roadogette 27th January 2006, 03:37 I'm 5'4". Have done nothing to my bike to accomedate my height. Can flat foot with my knees bent.
bclerk 27th January 2006, 03:46 5'7", 29" inseam. A top heavy ride and the 06 1200 C seat height took me a little time to get used to. Left the setup on max shocks cause I grind the pegs sometimes as it is. (OK, maybe a Lot). Almost dropped it a couple of times when it was brand new, but once I got practice managing the weight the height wasn't a problem.
XLinAL 27th January 2006, 03:52 6' even. 33" inseam.
Xl custom w/ stock fowards fits me fine.:D
blueglide88 27th January 2006, 04:03 There is at least 3 things wrong with this poll.
First, I expected the results to be a Bell curve, but instead I see a complete drop off after 6'3".
Second, don't we have anything else to chat about?
Third, what the hell am I doing answering this post? Don't I have anything better to do? :laugh
p.s....... 5'10"

Thank you! I will give him this information and I hope he finds one he loves!

I'm 6'4'' and used to ride a CBR...felt fine to me, so I wouldn't say that he wouldn't be comfortable. My 1200 R fits me a little less actually just because the ride height is less. At least I think... there are a couple years between both :)
xllent01 27th January 2006, 05:40 I'm 6'3" tall, i let my feet overhang the pegs, ride a custom with fowards, bike is lowered, the seat is 26.25" inches AFF, i can ride all day and love the ride of a good sportster.
DustyJacket 27th January 2006, 06:48 I was 5-11 but it seems I have lost an inch. Hpefully no more......
evadlink 27th January 2006, 07:19 5ft. 13" and riding a hugger. I sit back where the rider seat meets passenger seat with my feet usually on the forward pegs. I drop the left one back to mid peg to shift, and the right one back to brake when neccessary. I have been riding it so long like this, that these movements are done automatically and smoothly, without thought. This is the only way I can ride this pony comfortably. This unorthodox method, may seem like, I may be slow in getting to the foot brake, but not really, as I do ride with it on the mid peg, if circumstances warrant it. I of course have the front brake at ready, and have grown amazing quick at getting back to the rear brake. My wt. being more over the rear tire, adds some traction.
gunslinger 27th January 2006, 07:48 6'3" and I put 6" risers on my 04XL. Forward controls which could be farther forward and I am lookng at getting a different seat. I find I tend to push myself back and up on the back of the seat. I plan on putting shorter shocks on back just to get the tire up in the fender some more cause it looks best taht way. I will probably get some ape hangers or mini apes as well.
Jeffytune 27th January 2006, 08:31 6'2" and a 33" inseam. I have a 2003 custom with 13.5 418's on the rear and I like my Sundowner best(So Far).
ZenBiker 27th January 2006, 13:40 Wow, less than 24 hours and so many replies... You'd think this was a question of interest to alot of people...
I had expected the poll to show more shorter people but instead it seems to show Sportster riders to have an average height or perhaps even a bit on the tall side. Surprising, I thought I was in the minority in riding a Sportster and being more than 6' tall.
After this post I just can't wait to do some more work on my bike... Risers and forwards being the first things. I need more money and I'm taking donations if anyone would like to help! :D :tour :tour :tour
streeteagle2 27th January 2006, 13:46 I'm 5'8"-OK, that's not very tall but at least I'm not as short as a friend of mine who every time he farts he blows sand in his shoes, & is suing the city for building the sidewalk so close to his ass. :roflblack
jwb47 27th January 2006, 14:01 6ft1 225lbs I ride a 2004 1200r and have a 34 inch inseam . I have the h-d sundowner 2-up seat and I have added the adjustable highway pegs to strech out a bit , but the mids are ok and I actually like to hook my boots over the pasenger peg , its nice having three positions to ride in.
xena 27th January 2006, 15:17 I'd guess that you are more interested in hearing about the taller folks here but anyway, I'm 5'3" with a 29" inseam on a good day. Before taking delivery, I had the dealer install the 11.75" shocks, but I didn't care for them at all so I installed 11.5" progressive 412's, and then did a 1" fork drop with a white bros. fork spring lowering kit.
Can't get both feet flat due to the install of a Lepera Daytona seat which brought me up a tad, but I love the seat so I'm willing to keep things as is. I have one foot flat and the other foot halfway there so I feel safe enough when stopping.
LVBOATDOC 27th January 2006, 15:24 I"m 5'9" and put forward controls and a set of 4" pullback risers on stock bars and It fits just right, just need a more padded seat fer my butt. Gonna get rid of the ham can and go with a forcewinder to give my right knee some more room.
RedRider 27th January 2006, 15:35 You might also have check out the new Buell Ullysess. Much taller and longer than other Buells.
Roger that.
I'm 6'2", with a 34"+ inseam. I am very comfortable on my Roadster with mids.
I sat on a Ulysses in the showroom about a month ago, and I was able to flat-foot it, but just barely. And this was with me sitting towards the front of the seat. It is one of the tallest bikes I have ever been on.
I would feel comfortable riding it, but I think a lot of people with less inseam would not. The dealer told me that they haven't sold a lot of them because of the seat height, in spite of it being a nice motorcycle.
david 27th January 2006, 16:25 I am a tad over 6' and put on 12.5 progressive on back springs in the front , but that was for the added clearence and improved ride.
mavinwy 27th January 2006, 16:33 5'7" here.
The 1200c had a lowering kit on it when I bought it, but I probably don't really need it. I leave it on so the wife can ride the bike if need be (she is 5'1")
Mav
BigB 27th January 2006, 16:49 5'11 3/4" Can flat foot my 883 std no problem. For asthetics I bought but have not installed a set of 11.5" 412's and plan to lower the front as well.
denise1955 27th January 2006, 16:59 5' 1"
LePera custom seat - $400
Moved forward controls to mid - $30
Progressive 11" shocks - $250 (?)
Greywolf 27th January 2006, 17:25 5'4"- 28" inseam lowered seat and rear shocks not too bad but want to go even lower maybee with 11" Progressives in rear and 2'' springs by Progressive in front.
xl883c03 27th January 2006, 18:29 I am 5'8" a short old fart
29 in seam but I drag my knuckles too 35 sleeve.
so I can reach the bars
Most of the Harleys fit me ok
mr_master_one 27th January 2006, 18:52 6' 3" rompin stompin conservative
Ken Man Do 27th January 2006, 18:54 Forward controls and tweaked the handlebar position a half a dozen times.
1200 Custom 27th January 2006, 19:00 Around 6ft, no problems stock, i have change to a mustang wide vintage 2up,and the width made a little difference but no problem and it sure helped the wife's backside..*G*
MsPotatoPotatoHead 27th January 2006, 19:02 5'7", 32" inseam.
My 1200C fits great. It has mid controls and an aftermarket (a bit taller than stock) seat, but the stock setup fits great also. If I had the forward controls, I'd want to install pullback bars for better long-ride comfort. I like the mid-controls better with the stock bar position.
skratch 27th January 2006, 19:42 i'm tall enough to reach the ground dammit :D
5'3.5" (that half inch is extremely important)
forward controls, 11.5 progressives, lepera sanora seat (mustang for traveling, but sits too high for daily use)
famousperson 27th January 2006, 19:56 6', 32" inseam. Stock suspension, Mustang vintage seat. No problem flat-footing it. Sometimes feel a little cramped in the hips from the mid controls but not enough to change to forwards.
p'chop 27th January 2006, 20:08 06' 1200C, 6'0", 32-34" inseam, nada on changes.
AeroSport 27th January 2006, 20:39 5'8" with 30 inch inseam and 34 sleeve. Lowered the back of my 883 1.25 inches by putting 12" 418's on. Put 883L bars on the front and so far have used stock, 4", 5" and 5.5" risers trying to dial in my arm position. I am currently looking for 6" billet round ones and I think that will finally make it just right as I like more of a laid back position that puts me more down into the bike. (See pics in members gallery)
chris horne 27th January 2006, 22:00 6'1" with 34 inch inseam.
Ride my 05 883R with mids just fine , but if going over 100 mph for any lenght of time on the motorway will sometimes put feet on to the rear pegs.
BWP 5p 27th January 2006, 22:50 5'7"....1200 R.........stock seat.......stock LENGTH shocks.....no problem at rest touching ground. I usually ride with my feet on rear pegs unless I'm in heavy traffic or constantly changing gears. I'm real comfortable with the position....even though the seat needs changed.
Folkie 28th January 2006, 00:31 5' 8½" (that ½" is very important :laugh), 29" inseam. 11" 412s, lowered fork 1" (Progressive kit), Le Pera Silhouette LT solo. Could just flat foot before the mods, but much happier now.
DutchBoy17 28th January 2006, 04:22 I'm 5' 8-1/2" with a 29-1/2" inseam. I ride an '06 883C with a stock seat - though I suspect that'll be changed after my wife's gone on a few rides...
I can flat foot the bike with my knees slightly bent. I'm thinking of getting longer rear shocks so I can get some more suspension travel. I've had two bikes with 32" seat heights, where I could just barely touch the toes of both feet to the ground, so the custom seat feels real low to me.
I was originally set on getting an 883R until I spent some time sitting on one in the showroom and decided it felt a little cramped, so I sat on a custom and decided I liked the fit of the forward controls and the riser bars better
dabronco 28th January 2006, 04:49 Four feet, and twenty two inches.
fourteen 28th January 2006, 05:05 So how tall are you and what have you done to your sporty to accomodate your height?
6'. I just had to fill gas.
jade44V 28th January 2006, 05:43 5'4", 883 Hugger, which fit perfect until I put on the Mustang seat. Haven't done it yet, but I'm just gonna get boots with a little thicker soles. That should cover it!
5'4" here too, and with the Bare Bones I'm fine, with the Mustang I can't flatfoot the bike. And I have boots with pretty decent heels too. :dunno
Shu 28th January 2006, 05:52 5' 11" and done nothing to make the bike fit me better.
stevo 28th January 2006, 07:05 5' 10 1/2" - 5' 11" ... depending on mornin or night
around 200lbs
32" * 32" Levis untill I busted my leg and got fat ... now I wear 34" * 32" levis
can flat foot a sporty no probs with sandals on .... have a highway pegs to ease the strain on long runs and will keeping them and going to rearsets this time around
Darhawk 28th January 2006, 07:47 6' 4" at 230 pounds.......and before anyone comments, ya, they do pile shit high and thick..............still fast walk three miles in 50 minutes and bench press over 200 pounds, which I consider not bad for an old fart.
Shark Doctor 28th January 2006, 14:09 5'11" - 215 lb
Highway pegs in order to accomodate the swim fins. Still tough to shift, though...
jprior 28th January 2006, 14:42 5'11" - 175lbs Sportster C fits like a glove
DAKSY 28th January 2006, 15:00 5'9" used ta be 5'10"...'05 883C fits perfect...haven't hadda do anything, yet...but we're lookin to upgrade the OEM seat to a Sundowner, maybe...
fafcpa 28th January 2006, 16:22 I'm 5'6" and had lowered H-D rear shocks put on when I bought the bike. Then was uncomfortable because I could not flat floot when stopped so had 1/2" soles added to riding boots. Been fine since.
Changed the seat to a Corbin Sole but they had no effect.
Fred
kpayn68 29th January 2006, 02:36 5'10" w/a 34" inseam. My '04 1200C fit great when I got it, but I like the look of the lowered bikes, so I sent my shocks off and had 'em cut an inch and added a set of lowering blocks to drop it another inch today.
Swamp Fox 29th January 2006, 13:18 5'10" - I've done nothing special to my '03 883, can flat foot easy, running mid controls and soon will add hwy pegs so I can stretch out a bit.
txsporty 29th January 2006, 16:40 6'1", put forward controls on to stretch out a bit!!!!!:D
TallLew 30th January 2006, 05:26 I'm 6'2" (plus or minus an inch depending on how much work or whatever has me in a good or bad mood...lol). Anyhow...I have long arms, even for my height, so for me I have the apes. I had 10" apes when I bought it, but (insert long story here) had to replace them and went with the tallest HD had in the catalog. They fit me GREAT! Once I got the bars set for the right ange so I can sit with my back in the right position. Other than that haven't touched a thing for height related issues.
dcorkie2 30th January 2006, 06:54 5'4", 32" inseam
My sporty is an '04 1200 C, fits me like a glove! I've only added a Corbin solo, but that (I think) raised the seat height.
Snuffy 30th January 2006, 10:34 5'8" with a sundowner seat and when setting on scooter both feet hit the ground flat footed.

xl-scratch 30th January 2006, 13:53 Just found out from a physical exam that I'm 5-4. For a long time I thought I was 5-2. Now I know why my 1200C fits me so well, height wise. I can flatfoot it comfortably in my boots with the stock seat and shocks and tippytoe it in sneakers. I did put on pullback bars and heel stirrups to make the reach a little more comfy for those loooooong rides :) I'd like to put a Mustang seat on but I'm afraid of gaining the extra inch or so. Not to derail the thread, but has anyone tried a Saddlemen "Take Charge" seat? Supposedly they're lower AND comfier than stock.
Phil R 30th January 2006, 18:43 I'm 5'8" with a 30" inseam and have no problem getting both feet flat on the ground with my Sporty. Sure wish I had a few more inches of inseam so I could buy a Buell Ulysses.
wadel 30th January 2006, 18:48 6'3" with 36" inseams. No problems reaching controls, ground, etc.
Blake 30th January 2006, 22:52 6'-3" and the rearsets on my Buell Cyclone fit me fine. They take a lot of weight off the butt, but my knees are not getting any younger. If you've never tried rearsets, you might be surprised how comfortable they really are, especially with a more forward leaning handlebar/clip-on setup.
Blake
Blake 30th January 2006, 22:53 Not much cooler than a big old bellering cafe style sportster tearing up the race track. :)
tjduexjr 31st January 2006, 01:37 205, 6'2" My 05 1200C fits me fine and I have no complaints. I can plant my feet squarely on the ground and still have a little bit of play and leverage if my foot slips on gravel, or something similar.
cyn 31st January 2006, 02:08 5'4 & 3/4" with a 29" inseam. I had put on the HD touring seat set the shocks at 2 and messed with the handlebars to get a better angle. I may still get the pull back handlebars but I feel very comfortable on the bike ('04 1200 Custom). I'm lovin' it everyday!!
mhamden 31st January 2006, 19:30 I am 5ft 8in tall, haven't done nothing to the bike yet. Will once I figure out what it needs. Will probbley lower it a bid.

Progressive 11" shocks.
Stock length front end.
10" z-bars.
Mid-controlls with Hyway pegs up front.
21in front wheel.
Height is still issue with this set up.
Will change to Paughco frame with good stretch for looks and hieght issues.
OldDen 1st February 2006, 02:18 5'10", 195 pounds.
2004 1200 custom with Mustang Solo.
Fits fine for riding and I am flat footed at the lights.
Prefer mid controls with highway pegs but will leave the forwards.
phantom 1st February 2006, 02:28 I'm 6ft,have highway pegs, kept the mids ,they are more fun in the twistys.
renegade1 2nd February 2006, 03:09 I'm 5'10" and fit good with foward controls.
Gone 3rd February 2006, 21:58 I stand 5'6" in boots, my purple horse was lowered an inch before I purchased it, 11" shocks and a Corbin 2 up old style gunslinger seat. makes for a 22.5" seat height. i can ride the long streaches with my heels resting on the fwd controls, or slightly bent in the correct position. the only things i want to change are moving back and raising the bars 2 inches or so. and beef up the rear suspension to dual 11 inch shocks. I weigh 140 lbs, the springs are rated at 300 lbs. 2 up riding some times bottoms out the rear suspension. Rough roads suck.
ctd 4th February 2006, 18:49 I'm slightly over 6'3" with a 34" inseam. I am trying buckhorn handle bars to bring the riding posture into the correct position, and a new seat. The stocker is like riding on the fender. I have forward controls, which I have heard shifts your weight onto your tail bone, where the mid pegs centers the weight over the hips. Is this true? I need to take some jarring out of the ride, would progressive fork springs and what is the BEST shock for the rear to smooth out the bumps? I love my Sportster but need to get the ride softer because of a surgical snafu. Kind of off subject but I appreciate the replies.
c-a-lnm1200s 9th February 2006, 17:01 i'm 5'7" dropped the rear about an inch and left the front stock, and put foward controls and tall bars so i ride way stretched out
xl883lo 11th February 2006, 20:20 I'm 5'-8" but there is a dude that comes in my local Scooter bar who is a "long legged" 6'-10" and rides a late 90's 1200 std. He actually sits on the p-pad. Talk about looking like a monkey having carnel knowledge of a football.
MNewYork 12th February 2006, 03:37 I have forward controls, which I have heard shifts your weight onto your tail bone, where the mid pegs centers the weight over the hips. Is this true?
I'm not looking to start another mids vs Forwards thread but mids will provide you with more control - you can rise up out of the saddle easily and support yourself better when you approach rough roads. I've ridden with forwards and although I can adjust to them, I'm way more comfortable with mids - no contest as far as I am concerned.
ctd 12th February 2006, 06:23 I'm seriously thinking of moving the controls back from the forward position they're in presently. It would be nice to raise up if an unexpected pot hole etc was about to get hit. :)
XL883 12th February 2006, 22:42 Like xl883c03......5'8", 29" inseam. Going to be installing 12" Progressives on my 883 Std. to lower the back end a little and make it easier to plant both feet on the ground.
Tom
JicJac 24th February 2006, 21:39 I'm short... Knee high to a piston ring.
My XL 1200 is a challenge, but I ain't gonna do what I did with my previous Sportster (struts = rigid). At least when my wife hops on, I'm flat footed. (*Rethinks uncomplimentary comment about wifey...)
JJ
Chopper Duke 25th February 2006, 23:14 I'm 6'2".
Mid controls can be a little tiresome on my thighs, but such is life.
ctd 25th February 2006, 23:24 I'm 6' 3" and have considered the mid controls; which do you find better, the forwards or mid?
XL O.C.D. 25th February 2006, 23:26 5'4", 140, 28inch inseam, and a 12" ...(ok, I wish).
I was flatfooted in boots on my 01 883c w/ a White Bros rear lowering kit.
I'm waiting on my 06 883c to get ready at the dealer. I'm waiting on American Classic Motors to ship the rest of the parts I need for the dealer to finish the 1200 conversion. Once that's done, I'll be putting on 11" Progressives, which should make me real comfortable. I'm on the balls of my feet stock.
I love the forward controls, everything else feels wierd to me. I plan on eventually replacing the stock 883c handlebar with a flat one, like my 01 had. Just feels comfy all stretched out, blasting into the wind. I take it easy in the twisties... not my thing.
Carl-04XL 26th February 2006, 17:22 I'm just under 6'2", BUT I have a 32-34 inch inseam (depending on who cut/sewed the pants, and where). I haven't thrown my leg over any motorcycle that I can't flatfoot, yet. Add in about 3/4-1.5 inch for footwear heel height.
So, maybe the poll is a little mis-leading. For those of you who may have seen the Merv Griffin show, his 'sidekick' was Arthur Treacher. I think he was about 6'4" - 6'6". A frequent guest was Todi Fields, who stood about 5 foot and a bit. A true 'Mutt and Jef' pair. BUT, if they were sitting together on a couch, then they were almost eye-to-eye. Arthur was all leg and Todi had no legs, so to speak.
I haven't read the entire thread (102 posts when I wrote this), so if anyone else has said something about inseam vs. height, well, we're on the same page, sorta. :D
Anyway, I've got forward controls, stock seat :frownone , Progressive 412's and I'm going to put in the Progressive fork springs. Before the 412's, I'd scrap heat shield clamp tabs, or their bolts, on tight right turns and the jiffy stand on lefties. Now, I don't scrap either unless there is pavement 'bumps' in the turn. Or, if I'm playing Joe Roadracer....
(I'm mainly putting the fork springs in to keep the bike's attitude from 'rocking horse' on me during braking/accelleration. I figure I lose about 1/2-2/3 of suspension travel just from my weight alone: 275+ dressed up. )
bluedave 26th February 2006, 20:17 6' 3", I have forward controls but I am still looking to try and change my bars to get a bit more of a laid back feel.
Dave
Gone 26th February 2006, 20:32 I'm 6'2", with a 36" inseam. I took off the mid-controls immediantly, as I felt that I had less control with legs, ankles and feet all jammed up beneath me. I am a pretty inexperienced rider and that was the last thing I needed was "less control" Plus I think it looks better with my legs stretched out a bit! I also disposed of the buckhorns as they did not feel comfortable on my wrists and looked ridiculous at a forward angle. I now have a set of mini apes on which are much more to my liking.
bullitrider2003 1st March 2006, 22:32 I'm about 5'9" with the 883 Low. It fits me perfect how it is.
bluedave, I'm 6' 3" and installed the buckhorn bars, it was one of the best things I did, it allows me to ride sitting straighter. Very comfortable.
xlgirl 2nd March 2006, 01:40 I'm 5'1". Ride a 2005 Low. Put on a Corbin Close Solo and bought a good pair of boots!
Jiminator 4th March 2006, 05:20 6'1" Ride a 883C, 2004 w/forward controls. Put on a Mustang Wide Vintage Solo, which helped raise me up a bit. Put a set of highway pegs up on the engine guard as well, so I can stretch out even further. I can flat foot the bike with my knees bent with my 34" inseam.
handyman 4th March 2006, 07:24 I'm 5'8"
Height has never been a problem. Have the sundowner on 04 1200R for more comfort on longer rides. Almost dropped the bike when I did a u turn on median with a concrete culvert. Stopped for traffic and my leg was not a good match for the slope. Wife was on. Never let on that I almost lost it!
calsport05 4th March 2006, 15:47 I'm 5'4". I had my 1200 custom lowered before I brought it home. Also added a lepera seat which helped me to flat foot it.
sportyblue 6th March 2006, 05:42 I'm 5' 5 1/2". My bike fits me perfect. Both feet flat on the ground. It's been lowered. Have a mustang seat with back rest and forward controls. A perfect ride for me. 01 1200 c blue.... I love it.
Wintersdark 7th March 2006, 09:08 6'4". I'm pretty comfortable on my sporty.
I've got buckhorn bars and while I keep the mid controls (I like riding really aggressive twisties, and find the mid controls work better for that) I made brackets to mount my highway pegs 2" forwards and 1" down from the stock mounting point.
I've been considering some more extensive modifications down the road - a 2" stretch to the swingarm, a stretched gas tank and moving the seat back to accomodate those. Likely a new rear fender to fit as well... but it'll cost me a good fistful of change to do that, and I'm eating KD right now, so...
For a big guy, the buckhorn bars are a must-have IMHO. Even without anything else, they make the bike FAR more comfortable. Leaning forward at all with the standard bars (or really any other bars without much pullback) tends to crunch me up a lot. I bought drag bars, tried em out. They looked great, and were fun for more aggresive riding, but overall were too uncomfortable for daily riding.
I'm 5'6".
However, because I'm usually putting on the cowboy boots, two inches are added.:D
SamIam 7th March 2006, 13:48 No real size mods. 5' 8"
billb 8th March 2006, 13:27 I`m 5`6", have raised the back end with 15 1/2" shocks but lowered the front 1".
Perfect fit !
jrazo 8th March 2006, 14:37 5'10" about 225lbs, i really need better shocks. It is near impossible to tote the wife with the stock decoration shocks.
bearsfan 10th March 2006, 10:16 I'm between 5' 8" and 6' 2" - depending on what convenience store I'm leaving at the time. (I hope there's other Ron White/Blue Collar Comedy guys fans out there).
Seriously I'm around 5' 10". I like the forward controls - though when riding for a stretch I could use about an inch more forward. Only modification so far is the sundowner seat - more for wife and backside comfort than control though.
Sportster Girl 10th March 2006, 16:59 I'm between 5' 8" and 6' 2" - depending on what convenience store I'm leaving at the time. (I hope there's other Ron White/Blue Collar Comedy guys fans out there).
I luvvvvvvvvv Ron White! :smoke
tomrosamond 12th March 2006, 14:41 I am just at 6'.my bike (1200 sport) is stock height.only mod is forward controls. works out pretty good.Gets a little cramped on long ride's but nothing I cant deal with. My dad has been riding cross country since the late 50's.I made the mistake to complain about to him once and he said "Son,its part of being a biker...deal with it!"
MikeyT 17th March 2006, 04:23 I'm 5'11" and my 883 Custom seems to fit just right. It would be nice to stretch the legs out a bit more, but I can deal with it. I just throw them up over the handlebars…
Gone 20th March 2006, 04:48 5' 11 here 2 and my sport fits good enough for me.
SickleGuy 21st March 2006, 02:51 5' 9" and I have a 31" inseam just lower my sporty 2" rides great
Shift_4lo 21st March 2006, 03:15 I am 5'11 and growing and some time soon i am hoping to raise my bike up another inch or inch and a half and put some drag bars on it so that i am stretched out.
Piggy 21st March 2006, 03:27 5'10 30-31 inch inseam and I fit perfect on an 883C with the shocks adjusted for maximum height. At stops I can flat foot with my legs slightly bent. I am awaiting the Mustang vintage solo seat I ordered and I have heard it raises you up about an inch so I might have to adjust the shocks down a notch.
~Sno~ 26th March 2006, 16:14 I am 5'10" and had 10" shocks on my sporty till hubby got his own sporty and had 13" shocks on his. Since he is only 5'5"/5'6" we switched out and now my bike stand tall enough for me and his low enough for him...it was a match made in heaven...lol I still stand flat footed and now so can he...:p
~SNO~
Bigmatt 26th March 2006, 16:17 I am 5"8" as per all of my ID's however if truth be known I am shrinking:frownthre but my feet still reach the ground when stopped:D
cia2a 26th March 2006, 19:33 05 883C, 5'6" No problem at all, I just ordered a Corbin Two up, seat, I had a LePera Silhouette LT Series Up-Front Full-Length and got rid of it. Bike got stolen in Myrtle and am shopping for a new one as we speak.
thatbikerguy 26th March 2006, 19:38 Tall enough to reach the ground.:roflblack
what 26th March 2006, 21:47 I am 5' 8" and I had to get an 883 Low so that my feet would be flat on the ground with no more parts to buy.
Bill2 27th March 2006, 01:36 5'10" The 883 standard fits just right. I really answer this one to see what my title would change to at 900 post. "Senior chief master mechanic", well it's better than "chief no it all" the one i just had.
Little_Dave 27th March 2006, 20:18 I'm 5' 2", and I lowered the forks about 3/4" in the yokes, and fitted an aftermarket set of shocks that shortened the back-end by 2". This enables me to set both feet on the deck, even with the touring seat fitted.:clap :clap

rizer 27th March 2006, 20:35 5'6", 883 xl, i have long legs so the fit is perfect with construction boots on. had to get stock hyway pegs because of bad hip.
Bill2 30th March 2006, 18:42 Little dave and rizer welcome to the forum. Dave looks like you and your friend are ready to put some real miles on your scoots!
robert 2nd April 2006, 16:35 6'1" and I haven't done anything to change the ride height on my bike. I still use the stock seat and I love the way everything fits. It's my woman who wants a new seat!
sportsterwheelies 2nd April 2006, 16:55 im not sure but think im about 19 feet tall but maybe its inches i dont know.
cynthia 3rd April 2006, 05:47 I'm 6'1" and shrinking.
Cyn.
mnharleyrider 8th April 2006, 06:24 5' 10" and I ride a 1200 custom with a Mustang seat. Just tall enough so I can flat foot......
jdawson 9th April 2006, 00:46 5' 8" with a '99 1200 Custom. It fits fine, but I removed the stock drag bars and installed buckhorns. Much more comfortable for me.
Cameron 11th April 2006, 23:32 I am 5'5" and I have a standard 883 with stock seat, I weight is 133 and my feet is flat on the ground (just right) I can not be happier regarding the height, I have another bike 82 Yamaha seca 750 and I tip toe on it despite the lower center of gravity in the seca I am not as confortable as when I am on my sportst
Terrible 14th April 2006, 23:46 '05 1200C taxes paid.
I'm 5'8", 30" inseam, short arms. Mustang 15" vintage wide solo, progressive 12" 440 heady duty shocks, Race Tech heavy duty fork springs. The seat height and forward controls fit great. I need to change the handlebars, the small amount of reach wears me out. I'm considering buckhorns with a 9" rise and 9" pullback.
"When the going gets tough, give er more throttle"
lagerdrinker 15th April 2006, 15:41 i was watching the dating game one night and saw this respond to how tall are you with "I'm 5'12" "...doesnt that make her 6' tall?:roflblack
NRHS Sales 21st April 2006, 21:31 I am 6'1" tall but only have a 32in inseam. I am all torso!!!
OldFenderGuy 23rd April 2006, 15:34 I am 6'1" tall but only have a 32in inseam. I am all torso!!!
Guess I'm all torso as well, as I'm 6'1" and also have a 32" inseam. :)
bsporty 23rd April 2006, 21:20 I am 5'3.I am tall enough to ride any ride!
popeye 24th April 2006, 15:33 I'm 5' 4", with a 28" inseam. : I used to tip-toe on my 2002 883R. I recently put 11" progressive shocks on the rear (black, I hate polishing chrome), and now I can flat foot the ground, and even push it backward up a mild grade. Happy camper!!::D
rikrak 25th April 2006, 09:09 5'5" a :clapTowering:clap 5'5" have a stock 883XL I have no problem getting both feet down :tour (almost flat):tour switched to a Mustang Solo Seat (Plain Jane) for comfort makes seemingly no difference with ground contact :wonderlan What I wonder is where you big guys stuff your legs.
CCM0021 25th April 2006, 21:56 I'm 6'3" and very comfortable on the stock setup of my '05 XL1200C.
Carl-04XL 1st May 2006, 18:17 I am 6'1" tall but only have a 32in inseam. I am all torso!!!
Back in the day... I was trying to be a fighter pilor (USAF). Well, they measured my height as just under 6'2", but my seated height was 38". That was the max a person could sit and still fit under the canopy with the helmet on...
Never did make it as a fighter pilot. At the time, I didn't want to put up w/ the bs on the way... Might make a different choice now, except I'm older, fatter, and more worn out... :roflblack :roflblack :roflblack
1LD1200 1st May 2006, 22:29 I'm 5'6'' and my 95 sporty is stock height with stock shocks. I've got those special gas shocks that have adjustable stiffness. My bike is a tad too tall for me only because my pants always touch the exhausts at stop lights and get hot, and i feel like I have more control on a lower bike, plus I like the look. If I had it dropped 2" front and back it would be perfect
Cateman 15th May 2006, 05:02 5'3" and had to put 11" Progressives on my 883L to get comfortably flat footed. Not only does it give me more confidence, it looks way cooler than setting stock.
pudgie 20th May 2006, 00:42 5'8" and set flat footed on my 06 1200r with sundowner seat but, after setting on my Uncle's sporty I am going to lower it an inch felt much better.
speedster 21st May 2006, 09:36 5'-10" with forward controls and no problems. Tim
Our 1200 Sport must have what they are calling Middies. I am 5'7"-5'8" and I fit perfectly. I could also ride with regular pegs. But my sweetie is 6' and he would be more comfortable with regular forward controls. Our prior bike (totalled in Nov) a Dyna Superglide started with regular pegs which was perfect for me, then he put the forward controls on at which point I would have to scrunch up to the tank in order to ride. Very uncomfortable for me, but great for my sweetie, but that is ok I guess. I am just as content to ride "bitch". He is not to comfortable riding "bitch", hehehe
5'3", 135 lbs, and 28" inseam. 04 Custom.
I've added fork legs off of a Hugger, and a Le Pera bare bones seat. But when the bike was stock, it fit decent, although the stock saddle put me a bit too far back to reach the controls comfortably.
4-pac 30th May 2006, 04:43 5'9" with a 32" inseam and my 06 Custom fits like a glove.
Actually, better than the glove on my right hand, which looks much like my avatar. One of those things that happen when you mix a 13 yr old boy, pipe and powder :doh Can't say I've missed it much, it's always a good way to screw with the drunks. I still laugh when I look down and see that spare glove finger flappin in the wind. And I think to myself: "damn I'm glad it was just a finger and not the whole hand, otherwise this throttle/brake thing would be a whole lot harder"
Terry
but my close friends call me 4-pac
awaken96 30th May 2006, 13:04 Not tall enough for those new buell dual sports ! 5'6
bs2100 4th June 2006, 01:12 I'm 6'3" or so with no shoes on, but my sportster is just fine. I have forward controls which I wouldn't want to live without, but I've driven my mom's superglide plenty of times and I know I could ride a bike all the time with mid mounts but it's just nicer for me to stretch the legs out.
skien 4th June 2006, 02:47 Started at twenty" got up to 5'11 now with age 5'9
renpia 5th June 2006, 04:50 I'm 5'3" with short legs. I have 11" rear shocks, 2" lowered springs up front, and go between Badlander and Corbin seats on my 95 883/1200. I have the mids but am soon putting on forwards. I can flat foot it right now but not sure if the forwards are going to stretch me out too much. But all in all, the bike fits me great.
typerighter 5th June 2006, 07:13 I'm 5'10" with a 32" inseam, 2006 883 Custom, forward controls. I'm mostly comfortable, but I feel I can push the forward controls another inch or two forward. Right now I have to splay my feet outward to keep them from "riding" the controls.
xKZnowHD 6th June 2006, 08:10 6'1" had to make this 10 characters...
xKZnowHD 6th June 2006, 08:13 ADR2....former AD2 here. A7's was the airframe, TF 401D the power plant. Had a leading PO who was an old ADR sailor. Could not even imagine working on something that could fly and had pistons!
barnes138 6th June 2006, 08:16 I'm just over 6' and all I've done to accomodate is put on HD forward controls. Much more comfy, but I don't think I can lean in turns nearly as much with this stance. Still, the comfort trade was worth it.
ps. forward controls from the HD dealership rusted up in 2 years. I ended up sanding them and painting them with Rustoleum gloss black.
decrago 11th June 2006, 04:21 Not freekin tall enough. I have to be on my tippy toes to keep the Sporty upright. Funny thing is I am 5' 9", but my inseam must be short at 29".
nytebreed 15th June 2006, 22:36 5'11'' nothing done,fits fine.
md2420 15th June 2006, 22:43 6'2" and HAD to put forward controls on....got lucky and found an old custom set off a 69 xl that extend an inch or two further out than the forwards i've seen they sell today on ebay, etc.....just need to drop the rear-end a little, but that's more for looks than comfort.
adair727 16th June 2006, 05:58 5'9" and maybe another half if I put gel in the hair.
tfuller78 16th June 2006, 19:42 I'm 6'0". Got the forward controls and put 18" apes on a 97' 883 XLH. I still feel like my knees are a little too bent. On long rides I'll hop my ass up on the back seat if I'm by myself. I wanna get the highwaybars so I can kick my feet up a little bit on long hauls.
Jarl 23rd June 2006, 21:51 6'2" and i can get perfectly comfortable on a stock Ironhead....... for about 5 miles.
Heh.
98_1200C 26th June 2006, 10:20 I fit perfect 5'11 maybe if the forward pegs were a tad bit forward and higher it would be better :)
I seen some people on softtails with like short legs that can barely I mean barely reach the forward controls. Kind of funny actually!!! ;)
Frapper 26th June 2006, 11:16 6' 3", 280 pounds 10 pounds of that is nose though so really 270 of fun luvin and BS. MUh ha ha ha.:banana :roflblack :shhhh
TAZZ61 27th June 2006, 23:05 I'M 5'4, SEEMS MY 883C WAS MADE SPECIALLY FOR ME:laugh
myrl883 4th July 2006, 06:55 I'm all of 5'-4". GOTWA really summed it up - I have about a 29" inseam. 2" under Progressive front springs, and 11-1/2" 412's on the rear did the trick. Can't really use my straight highway pegs... I'm thinking about trying the MoCo's new adjustable ones. They look like the way for me to go.
yorgo 5th July 2006, 15:13 5'7" short legs. XL1200R stock except touring seat which is actually taller then the original. Have a little trouble reaching the ground so I try not to stop too much. Real trouble when stopping at a slope. The leg on the sloped side has to stretch to tip toe. Gotta find a way to lower this thing.
pdamedic 12th July 2006, 03:37 Being 6' 4" the most comfortable thing I have done was to put on the Mustang Daytripper. That sets you back a bit more than the stock seat. Plus I pushed my bars ahead a couple inches and have 13.5 inch progressives in the mail now that should set me up another inch or so.
PMMSPEED 12th July 2006, 12:52 I usually ride my 2006 XL1200L ( as in low) due to the fact that I'm 5'10'' with a 29 inseam. Had a football coach in college that would tell me if my legs were any shorter they wouldn't reach the ground. I've got a 2003 Fatboy that is a pain to ride if I have to stop anywhere that isn't flat.
Terry C. 13th July 2006, 04:28 5'10", 30" inseam.
I have no problems flatfooting my '92 sporty with the shocks set at max, or most any other Harley currently made.
I learned to ride (eary '70s) when most bikes had the old thick straight seats. You sat "on top of" the motorcycle, getting the toes of both feet on the ground on a big streetbike was an iffy proposition, much less a flat foot.
I cut down a lot of seats.
oldguyonsportster 13th July 2006, 13:08 I'm 5' 11" and shrinking (from age) my sportster fits me just fine or maybe I fit it.
grancan1 18th July 2006, 14:59 Six four and still looking for a seat. I can strech out by sitting on the passenger portion of the stock seat. Looks funny but releaves my butt burn.
newharley 25th July 2006, 19:10 4' - 21"

I have a brawler solo seat...nothing else to accomodate and the seat wasn't for accomodations I just wanted a solo seat. I find it comfortable to have forward controls. Just like sitting in a lazy boy.
I do miss the mid controls that I had on my Honda for cornering and driving at slow speeds in parking lots but I'm getting used to just squeezing my legs into the bike for balance.
Fackler Rebel 31st July 2006, 02:11 I'm 5' 8" on a good day and 56 looking at 57 in December. I did 1500 miles on my girl in June, back to my beloved Chattanooga Tennessee. With my hiking boots on, and my traveling bags or for sure my wife, I'm able to put both my feet, flat footed on the pavement. I rode the Triumphs and BSA's and remember the Indians. Sportsters are the best.

XL883 31st July 2006, 19:35 I'm damn sure tall enough!
O.k. I'm 5'8". Had an altitude misunderstanding with ground when stopped. Went with 12.5" progressive 412s [stock called 13.5, actually 13.25] lowered forks 1" with race tech springs. Put forward controls on cause of a nerve in my left leg that ached with originals. Good to go now. :clap
I'm 5'8" also and was thinking about going 1" lower on the rear shocks (13.5" on my '03 883) and 1" lower on the front forks, both using Progressive. Good to know this change worked for you, I am expecting it will work for me also.
drd1135 7th August 2006, 19:17 I'm 5'8" also and was thinking about going 1" lower on the rear shocks (13.5" on my '03 883) and 1" lower on the front forks, both using Progressive. Good to know this change worked for you, I am expecting it will work for me also.
I'm that same height and I'm going lower in the back (11.5's) but leaving my forks stock. This configuration is more like a custom, which is still actually higher in the front becuase of the bigger wheel.
streetshooter 7th August 2006, 19:23 6' 1/2" and about 180lbs...loosin weight to this agent orange sh_t....
but my 883 is as low as I can get it..almost like sittin in a chair....would love to lower it more but won't chop it .....Progressive shocks and lowering kit in the front helped alot....great feeling being low......
my 1200 is kinda standard height...my son rides it and he's 6' 4 1/2" so it fits him better......
MrChet 8th August 2006, 06:38 I'm 6' 200lb 34" inseam. I had a badlander seat that was ok but is torn and worn. I switched to a HD solo and now I sit an 1" or so forward from where I was.:( Now I want to make extended forward controls to make it more comfortable.
I have the bike lowered and like the looks of it that way. The back could use some more travel though. I'd like to lower it some more too! I find that my feet reach comfortably all the way to the ground, but to close to the forward controls. Maybe I need to find another seat to put me back again?
Who makes a small solo that good looking and comfortable? Or maybe a gel seat to park my butt in for long rides without being a pain.
marcello 10th August 2006, 02:30 lickscycles.com 10 inch shocks very nice
Geoff5323 13th August 2006, 16:00 6' 1" on a bog standard 883C though I could do with the handlebars a bit nearer.
cheyenne71597 16th August 2006, 19:28 I am 5'8". I just bought my Sportster and it had already been lowered. I would like to get forward controls later on.:tour
STW 17th August 2006, 22:39 5'11" and feel cramped (leg length) on a 2000 which I think is supposed to have a higher seat than the current XL.
Any one done anything to raise the seat an inch?
richnmib 19th August 2006, 03:32 I am 6'1" and I am glad I got the forward controls. Without them I feel like I am sitting on an old Army field desk stool.
Bonnie 2nd September 2006, 15:32 Im 5'7 w/ feet flat on the ground when sitting.
Also have forward controls
Gone 4th September 2006, 23:38 I am 6'4" and 350 lbs so far all I have done is put a sundowner seat on it. I am looking to put highway pegs on it. The longest ride I have made so far is 350 miles in one day.
hawaiian 12th September 2006, 11:13 whaddya know...a bell curve...
SoonerSporty 21st September 2006, 22:31 I'm 5'7" on a low gravity day. I put shorter shocks on the back to make it easier to stop flat footed. I have mid controls and highway pegs. The highway pegs still look like new. I feel too stretched out on them.
SS
Icebeast 29th September 2006, 01:28 I'm 6'-2", but all my height is in my torso. Low waist with a short 31" inseam. Still, I have put on forward controls, lowered the rear, and stretched the swingarm 4". The cheap forward controls I purchased off eBay were the same ones that were mentioned on a web page a while back that were WAY forward. I modified them the same way as this dude described it and now they fit near perfect. Turning the mounts around backwards brings the controls further back and up. Mounting them the way they were when they arrived and the way the instructions suggest would be perfect for someone with a 40" inseam. Well, maybe a 36" inseam. Anyway, I sit tall in the saddle, but I love my Sporty.

tall1 29th September 2006, 13:24 I'm 6'4" and found the stock riding position on my 91 Sporty to be a wee bit cramped (OK... a LOT cramped!). So far, I've installed forward controls (helped my legs alot) and tweaked the setup of the stock buckhorns some but I'm still wanting to stretch out some more. I'll be trying some flat track/beach bar style handlebars next and am trying to find a seat that allows me to go a bit further back in the saddle. If any of you guys out there have been there/ done that and found a good combination, I'm open to suggestions....
BWP 5p 30th September 2006, 03:04 As you can see......I can't touch the ground yet....so I have to take my old Granpa with me when I ride. I am hoping to grow soon so I can ride solo because with my weight....this sucker should be really strong.:roflblack

I'm trying to secure a 1200R seat, as I found this seat to be very comfortable and the perfect height for me.

Dave Mickley 21st October 2006, 17:33 5'7" on a tall day and my 1200C fits real good, the wife wants a dresser but since she only rides with me less than 20% of the time I am going to take care of my wants. the only bike I would consider besides my trusty sporty would be asuper glide, with a 28" inseam I just am not comfortable on any other bike [besides I like my sporty]. Dave
Ronn39 21st October 2006, 20:16 6.0 feet, 32-inch inseam. I swapped out the 11.75 inch custom shocks for a 13.5's off an "R" model. Rides better and I can comfortably sit at stop lights now. Also put a set of pegs with stirrups on the forward controls and that made a big time difference in ride comfort.

kk0210 23rd October 2006, 01:57 Hello all, first post on the forum. I'm 5'11" and ride a 1200 low. I love the handling and this bike takes the twisties like a champ, jumps off the line and rides smooth.
NoTrace34 24th October 2006, 05:43 6' 2"..200 lb..forward controls...drag bars.
Im very comfortable in the position this setup puts me in....even after a couple of hours. I dont feel like a bear on a tri-cycle. Seems people always hear Sportster and think...small bike..Ive ridden a few and the Sportster is not small by any standard....not a large bike.. but not small. I dont know why people ask if you can ride 2 up...or if it can go interstate speeds and all of the other small bike questions. If I could ride 2 of my buddys around on a freakin Schwinn when I was a kid, I can damn sure ride 2 up on the interstate with a Sportster...its the smallest bike in the Harley line which is filled with big fat cruisers (thats not a slam..may get one one day,but wont trade in the Sporty)....that doesnt make it the smallest bike in the world.
Its a good sized bike with respectable power....if it cant move you.....how the hell did your legs manage to carrie your a-- out to the driveway?
Ok...went off on a tangent...Im done now.....................................
dudester 26th October 2006, 17:16 I'm 6'-2"/3" (depends on time of day). I'm a little cramped with the stock seating postion (XL 1200R) and find the mid-controls to be somewhat awkward. Would also like to get a seat that lets me move around a little bit more, and possibly a little higher to get some extra leg room.
I think the short people (I know, politicallly incorrect) have an advantage in this regard, since there are numerous lowering options available both aftermarket and from the factory. However, to be even more politically incorrect, I'm glad I'm not short!:tour :tour :tour
blastoff99 27th October 2006, 07:11 However, to be even more politically incorrect, I'm glad I'm not short!:tour :tour :tour
No kidding! I'm 5' 5", with a 29" inseam and short arms. There are a lot of bikes that are just too tall / long. And 5' 5" isn't all that short! I'm amazed that some of you who are 5' 8" and thereabouts have actually lowered your Sportsters. I guess I'm used to a tall bike by now; my Honda has a 32" seat height. It's a challenge, at moments.
My 04 883C fits well. I rode an 04 1200R last weekend, and it also fit well. It had the H-D touring seat on it, and I'm curious how that compares to stock. I should probably find a stock 07 to sit on before I plunk any money down on one. I'd hate to find out too late that it's too tall.
gbinman 31st October 2006, 06:51 I have a 05 XL833 standard. I am 6'3" 205#. I felt a bit cramped... like a bird sitting on stick. I added forward controls which I really like.
The stock solo seat wasn't butt friendly for more than an hour. I swapped in a Mustang Vintage Wide. Better seating position and butt friendly.
I have been considering adding pullback risers. I am thinking about the 4.5" size. Comments?
HarleyChick 13th November 2006, 16:51 I ride a 2007 883 and I'm barely 5' 3". First I got the lowering kit and some tall boots, but I'm still sitting a little too high for comfort. So I've decided after much consideration to get a sporterster low stock seat and see how that works. And after that, just to make my ride a little more comfy...then I'll go for some mini apes. My Harley parts book is full of arrow shaped Post Its, just waiting for Christmas! Not a very sly hint...
hogpreacher 15th November 2006, 22:35 I am 5'7" tall. I lowered and raked my sporty. Great handling and reponse. Ride solo on sporty; use RK for 2 up.
Roadster_Rider 24th November 2006, 05:10 Looking at the votes it appears the majority of sporty riders are in the 6 foot range, i guess its not such a small persons bike after all :D
I'm about 6' 0", really its a little over 5' 11", but i'm hoping i'll grow just a tad bit more.
chrisg 26th November 2006, 04:50 Wow! surprised at how many "normal" sized people actually lower their bike. What the heck are you trying to do? I'm a stout 5'6" (with a 30" inseam),which the rest of the world (I've been told) considers pretty damn short, but I don't see the need to reach totally flat footed, nor would I want to have the bike any lower(less ground clearance). I've actually been looking for a taller seat for more peg (rearset) to seat room. Once your rollin', who cares? and at a stop, as long as you can dab a toe or two two keep it from fallin' over.....
My SV feels like a lifted 4x compared to the Sporty, but you can still get a knee down and not drag any hard parts.
davidcar 26th November 2006, 06:55 Im just over 6 feet, I have 11.5" progressive shocks and I re-constructed the stock seat so that it is about 2" thick and so that I can sit back about 2" further. Height from the ground to the top of the seat is 28". Forward controlls. As a whole package it's pretty good.
rvguy 28th November 2006, 17:12 5'10'' and it fits like a glove. I've sat on just about all the BT's at the last bike show, and none fit me better, especially for twice the $ or more. And why get a slower bike on top of it? Luv my sporty! :banadanc
Duane Wood 28th November 2006, 20:00 Hello all, first post on the forum. I'm 5'11" and ride a 1200 low. I love the handling and this bike takes the twisties like a champ, jumps off the line and rides smooth.
A "low" that takes the twisties like a champ? Must have the ehaust, sidestand, and pegs ground clear through...........
DaMongNiu 28th November 2006, 21:05 I'm 6'1" my newly acquired bike has mid controls and a mustang seat. The distance from the seat to the controls is too close for me to be comfortable. Will probably have to install forward controls.

Don't believe everything your mind tells you.
army_navy 29th November 2006, 06:25 I'm 5'10". 32" inseam. I'm a big guy, at 250lbs. I felt cramped with the mids, my hip flexors would cramp up.
I've got the big, wide pillow seat, so it raises me up a little.
I lowered the rear by 2", and it put my feet flat on the ground.
I put on fwd controls, and couldn't be happier. It really relaxes my legs.
I still haven't gotten use to them yet. I'll take off from a stop, and my feet are searching for the mids that aren't there any more. I think people are wondering why my feet are dangling out in space:p
trekster 29th November 2006, 15:26 I'm 5'10". 32" inseam. I'm a big guy, at 250lbs. I felt cramped with the mids, my hip flexors would cramp up.
I'm 5'11", 170 lbs, with a 31" inseam (that's right I can't buy jeans off the rack without getting them altered).
I had the same problem with the Honda 250 and the mid-controls at the MSF Rider Course... my hip flexors would cramp up.
My '06 1200 Custom, with the forward controls is a perfect fit. I love it. :tour

Quite surprised with the number of big guys riding Sporties here.

myndset 25th December 2006, 06:59 5'8" 1200C stock seat, Drag bars, stock risers, couldn't be better..........
Old_Goat57 25th December 2006, 22:53 5 ft 6 inches tall. I like the forward controls on my '06 XL 883C, but the bars could be a little bit wider and closer to me by an inch or 2 - that's why I think I'll go with Duece bars whern I can. I have thought of getting the Progessive Suspension rear shocks, a little shorter than stock for better handling, but the "experts" say you should lower front forks and rear shocks at the same time, if you are gonn alower at all. I'm undecided and not sure if $$$ is worth it.
SaltLick 4th January 2007, 00:40 wow im 5 11 but its my inseam that is the problem. Its 29". Yeah so the top portion of me is longer than most (i have a hard time finding shirts that come down long enough) and have long arms as well. My dad was really tall, my mom was really small. So i got my dads top portion and my moms bottom portion (the length of the legs that is) My bike has forward controls, and i must say its a stretch sometimes for me to use them, but i dig it im all stretched out down there. As far as the top, im switchin to drag bars hopefully that will uncramp my reach a little bit.
00XLC07XB12R 4th January 2007, 00:45 6'1". Hugger shocks. Forward controls. 6* wide glide front end w/stock length forks. Badlander Seat. The Badlander seat lets us taller guys sit back a little farther. The stock solo made me feel like my nuts were rubbing the tank.
lincoln1975 21st January 2007, 19:42 Im 6'10" tall, I like the idea of a low bike. so is what I did was put progressive 11" shocks on the rear and a lowering kit on the forks. Also to the little added lowering it added, I also put a wideglide front end on it wjth a 6 degree rake. Overall it has worked very well for me
sweetearlybronco 28th January 2007, 21:36 i am almost 6'. i have a 05 roadster with forward controls and a sundowner seat (if i remember right). dave
angel1200 28th January 2007, 22:01 I'm 5'2" in height.
I have riding boots with 3" heels. They helped a LOT! Problem is that they are uncomfortable if I have to stand for any lengthy amount of time or walk much.
Have a seat on order from Lepera with the plate and foam program. They send the seat out uncovered. I put in on the bike and try it out for a bit. Mark it where I think I need it shaved or cut out more. Send it back to have the modifications made, cover put on and they ship it back to me. The unfinished one should be here on or about the 1st of Feb. Hopefully by the end of Feb I can wear regular boots without 3" heels and be able to flat foot.
Ranger Bob 28th January 2007, 22:47 I'm 6'2" with 33" inseam/legs. My machine has forward controls and fits like a lounge chair. Real comfy.

Big-Ed 31st January 2007, 01:18 Im 6'4" with a 36-38" inside leg & I dwarf my 1200 Sportster Sport, but I havnt done anything to it to accomodate my size, I used to ride ducati's & have my legs sideways cause they didnt fit in the fairing!.
welshturk 31st January 2007, 16:33 5' 10" ...and a bit, with a 33" inside leg.
Drag bars, 4 1/2" risers, Lowered Custom saddle (based on a Le Pera "Silhouette") and C.C forwards.
Only had one shortish ride with the forwards fitted, so I can't really comment on middle to long distance rides. Things seemed o.k tho'.
One short ride is due to the fact that when I stopped at a filling station, the kick stand I had at the start of the ride...was no longer there...Doh !!
2nd one I've lost in 4 months...another £55 gone...Double Doh !!!
plakgt50 31st January 2007, 20:03 5'8", that's the reason I went for the Hugger, it was the right choice for me. Fits me perfect!
ejonny 11th February 2007, 19:28 I'm barely over 6'. The only thing that I've done on my XLC is to raise the rear from the stock 11.75 to 12.5 but that was more for weight/ride reasons then any height issue. I'd have put forward controls on it if it hadn't already had them.
Twisty571 11th February 2007, 23:34 There is at least 3 things wrong with this poll.
First, I expected the results to be a Bell curve, but instead I see a complete drop off after 6'3".
Second, don't we have anything else to chat about?
Third, what the hell am I doing answering this post? Don't I have anything better to do? :laugh
p.s....... 5'10"
this poll is actually pretty informative as to what people have done to adjust riding stances and what parts they have & use:tour
I am 5'10" with a 33" inseam and just bought a 06' XL883C and like they way I sit on it,not exactly flat foot but mainly because the forward controls,my bud has an 04 1200 with mids and he is taller and is always saying he needs forward controls,I did order a sporty low seat for the look and maybe it will put me Dead flat foot but no biggie,on the other hand I also picked up a 89'XLH and it has aftermarket forward controls on it with a custom solo seat I think? It also has buckhorn bars on it in which I like also, that bike I sit lower than my stock 06' and Dawn is 5'7" ish and she sits nice on it so she is gonna try and ride!:clap I have only had both a week and haven't been on my VLX in a couple weeks & I felt like I was sitting on the ground compared to my HD's it felt weird,it's really low to me already,it has forward controls compared to the mid HD's and that's how I got to try out Sporty's:rolleyes: Scott would want to trade to stretch his legs.:doh I would get stiff knees on Mid's quick I think.
Malc_F 16th February 2007, 11:25 Im 6'2" and 286lbs my 1200S with forward-pegs and Fatboy bars fits me like a glove! :tour
