Anyone know if there are rev limiters on the 1988 883 ????? I've WOT'd till it won't climb any more and no sputters ( ever )

That is the rev limiter kicking in. Otherwise it would continue to climb. If your hitting your rev limiter, the bike doesn't necessarily sputter in fact it will run fine, it just won't go faster/increase rpm's.

What gear are you doing this in? You should know when your bouncing on the door of the limiter. It'll act like your running out of gas. At least that's how mine works. Or I should say used to work.

The early rev limiters are a soft retarder.....it just stops pullin as the ignition is retarded to the point where it wont support any more power

The later ones are a hard limiter that actually drops the ignition out and splutters hard

I understand now.....I thought it was just the top RPM it could do. Not from retarded timing. :wonderlan

So is hard on the motor or causing damage.to hit the limiter every once in a while?

I would think holding it against a soft limiter likely runs your exhaust gas temps through the roof, my bike definitely lets you know when it smacks the rev limiter.....LOL
