View Full Version : Hurricane Is Coming Ashore
GOTWA 5th February 2006, 03:37 Alright Dan/Aaron,
Gosh damn the past couple of weeks have been hard! I want more than I can I can have all at once. Don't we all? So I had to get things in perspective and make some tough choices. Brakes, A/C, seats, 1200 conversion, powder coating, etc. Damnit!
Mulled it all over in my mind a thousand times and the Hurricane A/C came rising to the top. I really like my ham-can and want to keep it. I think it's distinctly Sportster. I can swing ~$500 this year and given my frustrating go-rounds with the frickin' stealer about my oil consumption, I was very close to just doing the 1200 conversion. Doing it myself with a local Indy would be just under $500 but I'd still need the valve job and that would a ~$100. But then I realized that doing a conversion with this POS a/c I have would be damn near criminal.
And besides, like I have said many times, there is a lot of potnetial left in this ride that the rider has yet to find. So siding with my function over form side, the money is going to the Hurricane. Not only to keep the Sporty look but because I know the quality is without question.
Sorry for the long-windedness but I wanted other folks to get a feel for how and why I made my selection in case it helps them.
So...
Am I understanding correctly that for my '05 883XL I need:
- The 2" set-up, 66-NRHS-04ACC2 - $199.95
- The complete install kit, 66-DS289126 - $58.95
- And if I want black, 66-P0280.F - $10.65
Also, do you sell and/or recommend the Pingel petcock with the stock CV carb I have? And if so, how much?
stevo 5th February 2006, 03:42 ya don't need the fuel tap at your performance level Erik .....
The stock one fed mine to 11's without issue
save ya money and put it into something else

Thank you Stevo. The balance of my funds will be going to a bit of gear for the youngster.
And not for nothing, when Stevo is impressed, I certainly am. And if the Hurricane is good enough to put on his or his customers bikes, I know it is top of the line!

that's money well spent........:tour
GOTWA 5th February 2006, 03:58 that's money well spent........:tour
Indeed. She's excited to do a bit of "motorcycle" shopping with Dad. She's already asking me about the Hurricane and why I want it and what it does and so on and so on. A future XLF member in the making I think. ;)
stevo 5th February 2006, 04:12 The thing that impressed me with the backing plate that Aaron sent me, was that it was a "second" ... he classed it as not good enough for retail sale because a tool had broken a tip and marred the surface on the back...
Ya don't even see that when it's on...
His idea of "not good enough" was better than a lot of other manufacturers "top shelf" over priced crap
GOTWA 6th February 2006, 05:44 I definately know the quality will be there and I will be more than satisfied.
NRHS Sales 8th February 2006, 00:00 Your prices and part numbers are correct but the black part is in place of the chrome bracket not in addition to it. If you want a black bracket we can actually do that kit a bit cheaper than the $58.95 install kit. Give me a call.

What coincidence. I happen to be a big fan of both black and a little cheaper. :D
Thanks Dan, should be hearing from me in a few days.
raysheen 8th February 2006, 00:09 I definately know the quality will be there and I will be more than satisfied.
yeah they are great quality parts...ESPECIALLY compaired to the SE air cleaner backplate! We have two of them (one for each bike...a 2" regular and a 2" offset) and I'm very pleased with them. not that you need my approval! I'm just saying that I think you made a good choice! ;)
wadel 8th February 2006, 00:22 Just yesterday I bought the 2" offset. I too like the ham can. I took a look at my friends SE AC and decided I wanted to go with the Hurricane. I haven't heard anything but positives about them.
Turbota 8th February 2006, 00:28 GOTWA ....
Don't Let Your Petcock Become Your Main Jet!
Get a Pingel !
ofnaman1995 8th February 2006, 09:49 O.k. What exactly is a "petcock" and "Pingel"??
GOTWA 8th February 2006, 10:41 O.k. What exactly is a "petcock" and "Pingel"??
A petcock in generic terms is a small valve. In the case of motorcycles it refers to your fuel control valve, the one that has on, off, reserve.
The stock petcock is vacuum actuated. Meaning the crank must be rotating to create vacuum to enable fuel to flow. Turning the valve to the on position simply selects the internal tank spout it will draw from and "allows" for fuel to flow once the vacuum is present. Sort of like a green light. Just because you may go, doesn't mean you can go.
Pingel is an aftermarket non-vacuum petcock manufacturer. So when you turn it to the on position, fuel is free to flow irrespective of the engine.
When Turbota says, "don't let your petcock be your main jet." He's saying that by relying on the vacuum controlled valve that becomes my first restriction.
Make sense?
ofnaman1995 8th February 2006, 12:32 GOTWA,
I appreciate you taking the time to explain that for me. Many thanks.
Scout99 8th February 2006, 12:57 GOTWA - I have a 2" off-set and am very happy with it...highly impressed with the quality of the NRHS stuff…they will definitely be my choice when I start doing engine mods.
I stumbled across this from Crossroads and it looks like a great accompaniment for the Hurricane…and only $40. Haven’t read about any feedback on it, but for all appearances it looks well worth the money. You can always buy the banjo bolts and other fittings separately to either vent to a filter or the atmosphere.

GOTWA 8th February 2006, 15:46 man ... they is tidy pieces of kit....
In Yankaneese that means...those look good...right? :D
They do look very good but I can't find any info on them. Got a link Scout?
And I'm also wondering if going with the complete NRHS set-up might be the wiser?
mhamden 8th February 2006, 15:48 Looks great
stevo 8th February 2006, 15:52 the mounting bracket is irrellevant as far as anything performance is concerned...
NRHS uses a generic aftermarket unit that does the job well. .... I use the same piece regularly
those things do the same job and will give you no performance gains but look shit loads better.... they may not be quite as solid as the bent single piece ......
but I like 'em
stevo 8th February 2006, 15:54 man ... I goota laugh at that ..
Eriks at work checkin out the gear and Scarlett's at home checkin out the same thread to make sure Eriks not wastin any hard earned $$$$

Knew they wouldn't gain me any performance but I was just thinking about fit match. Didn't realize the NHRS bracket was aftermarket so I guess that's irrelevant.
They do look slick.

GOTWA 11th February 2006, 09:23 Well, just got off the phone with Dan and the whole kit n' kaboodle is ordered. Should be here in a couple weeks. :clap :)
wadel 15th February 2006, 02:43 Just got home from work and there was a box sitting on the porch. :wonderlan Yep, it was the Hurricane. I just opened it up and am very impressed with the construction on this thing. Don't have to worry about it warping or cracking! I'd love to go put it on but I'm waiting for my break-in period to be done (I want to be able to get on it before and after). I have 200 miles in so far...Unfortunately, the high today was 35 and it looks to stay the same for awhile.:censor

Yep Wade, mine just came today as well. A week ahead of schedule even. Thanks Dan. :clap
Initial impressions are...um...WOW! I mean even the packaging is excellent. And the quality of the Hurricane Flow is outstanding.
It'll be a while until I get it all put on. I need to finish my fight with the dealer over my leaking valve seals. I'm still in the "can't check my own oil stage" for about 120 miles or so. I reckon if they don't even trust me to check my own oil they sure as hell won't take kindly to installing all this stuff. Don't want to give them any excuses. So until things warm up a bit the stuff will have to sit.
Actually will work out good though because I can do the install at the same time I do my 5k service.
But just knowing I can trash that POS Raging Chicken thing is a huge piece of mind. Yes, I'm a little excited. :D
Ralph 21st February 2006, 01:36 Ordering mine with Dan tomorrow.
Ordered the V & H Shortshots Staggered pipes Saturday and with the Hurricane A/C and re-jetting, I'm hoping for good things from the upgrade.
Sounds like it takes a couple weeks for the Hurricane to come ashore?
Oh well; although we've had some good ridin' weather this winter, looks like the cold and wet has finally caught up with us in Texas. Haven't been able to ride the scoot for about a week. I'm Jonesin and don't know how you really cold weather guys cope. :tour

Predator 21st February 2006, 01:42 Congrats on the purchase mate. You'll love it.
Very easy to install also.
What are you going to do with the breather system?
Ralph 21st February 2006, 03:09 Thanks Predator.
I've heard nothing but good things about the Hurricane AC.
And those V & H Shortshots Staggered--Oh my! :banana :banana
I'm no wrench, other than basic service and some miner tinkerin', but from what I've read in other threads, I'm thinkin' I'll just vent to the atmosphere.
I'm certainly open to suggestions from those more learned than myself, however.

GOTWA 21st February 2006, 07:01 Congrats on the purchase mate. You'll love it.
Very easy to install also.
What are you going to do with the breather system?
Yeah I'm already excited Cam.
I bought the re-router kit so crank case gases will no longer be getting recycled. I got a little bell-like filter deal with it. Should be a nice clean set-up when it's all said and done. :tour
Predator 21st February 2006, 07:43 NRHS sold me the Drag specialties unit which i couldn't get routed efficiently and it kept leaking oil over the case.
So i ended up doing away with the filter and just routed the tubing just in front of the front pulley.
Long enough not to get dust sucking back into the heads.
I really could not understand why the filter in the first place. It's a canister type setup that really doesn't filter anything.
GOTWA 21st February 2006, 07:56 So Cam, you saying you didn't even use the horseshoe router deal and just ran tube down to open air???
Predator 21st February 2006, 08:04 Pretty much Erick. Mine didn't have that horseshoe setup.
It's just 2 banjo bolts from the heads into a 'T' via rubber hoses, then the filter (now obsolete) off the 'T' and a hose running down.
Nothing else.
Seems to be working well.
Ralph 21st February 2006, 14:51 Opps. Sorry guys. Looks like I stepped on your conversation.
But I think I've learned something about what to do with the crank case gases.
Thanks!

Yes Ralph, I was originally answering Gotwa. Good to know I helped you too though. It really is a snap to install. Just nuts and bolts and nothing about the install is weird.

No problem at all Ralph. It's an interactive forum meant to help us all. So it's good to dive in and ask the questions and such.
When I do the install I will be using the re-router set-up first. If for some reason that doesn't work out then I'll fall back ten and punt. I know what Cam is talking about and others have talked about it as well so there's definately options.
Ralph 22nd February 2006, 14:56 Spoke to Dan yesterday when I ordered the Hurricane.
He confirmed that, for me, venting the crank case gases to the atmosphere may be the best option b/c of the high humidity we have here in Texas. (He used to live in San Antonio). Dan said venting them into the filter that's coming with the installation kit may not work well b/c condensation will probably accumulate and drip out.
I think I'll try venting to the filter first and see what happens.
I'd be interested to hear about your installation and how the re-route works Gotwa.
This place rocks with good info. :banana :banana
When I get done with "Pearl" (if ever), I'm gonna refer to her as "the Sporty that the Forum built!" :smoke

hdmc_ru2 12th May 2006, 04:33 Would love to see some pic's posted on different ways to route the gases,
Atmosphere, filter, catch can? How and where are you running the hoses? Any Pic's?
