View Full Version : oil suction gun
midnitewolf 7th February 2006, 08:03 I was wondering if anyone uses a suction gun

to suck the oil out of there oil tank rather than
messing around with the drain hose.
It seems it would be eaiser and less of a mess
just to warm it up and suck the oil out of the tank
Mr Jimi 7th February 2006, 08:14 I use one of those when I add oil to my standard transmission on my Chevy S-10.
It works great.
I would not recommend it in an oil change. How are you going to empty engine of oil? Trust me, its easier to do it the regular way:tour

When you do it the regular way all your draining is the oil tank
anyway , so I was thinking  if I warm up the bike ,
suck the oil out of the tank then squirt it into a gallon milk jug .
Tucson_Tim 7th February 2006, 19:06 Well, you wouldn't get the oil that is in the drain down-tube, but that can't be too much. Plus you wouldn't have to bleed the down-tube drain.
I'd also like to like to hear some opinions on this idea. :o
xl1200r 7th February 2006, 19:11 You also won't get the crud out that sits at the bottom of the tank.
BTW - those guns ARE messy, as they don't really hold the fluid that well when they're upsidedown. We use them to suck out radiator coolant at the shop.

That's a good enough reason! :clap
Albie1200 7th February 2006, 19:39 We used a pump type deal for our boat before my Dad sold it. It's the only way since pulling the motor out to change the oil would not be cost effective. Maybe if they came up with something like that, but hooks up to the filter connection or something. Fortunately oil changes are stupid easy on these bikes.

I have been thinking about this for awhile (since the first oil change )
so the last time I changed oil I looked in the oil tank and there was
still a small amount of oil which I think I could of sucked out with
the suction gun .
I saw this in the JP catalog which gave me the Idea

I never watched the dealers change oil I wonder what way they
do it .
Shu 7th February 2006, 19:56 Everyone might want to try this little test. Get yourself one of those little telescoping pencil magnets. Stick it in your oil tank and run it all around, then pull it out and check out the metal! When you drain your oil, use a flash light and look down in your oil tank at hose the lines are fixed, specifically the oil drain line and it's location to the bottom of the tank.
Sucking it out is not a bad idea. You might even remove more of the crud by doing this.

Shu, Are you saying that the oil drain line is NOT mounted at the exact bottom of the tank?
WildWilly 8th February 2006, 00:07 I use an oil extractor that I purchased through Griot's Garage. www.griotsgarage.com Used it on my Electra Glide and Sportster. Drain plug was not at the bottom of the oil tank on either bike and I got more oil removed with the extractor. 2 or 3 pumps and the oil is siphoned out with no mess.

Is this the one you bought?

t.c. Johnson 8th February 2006, 01:34 I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work.
I used a suction gun to refill the tranny.
WildWilly 8th February 2006, 14:08 Tim: That is the one I have and it works great. The top comes off and it has a pour spout that allows me to pour the oil into my recycle containers. (Large plastic liquid Tide containers with screw on lids) Use a couple of these to transport the oil to our recycle center. Very clean and tidy with no spills..
Scout99 8th February 2006, 14:22 I'm trying to visualize how you get more oil out using an extractor v. allowing gravity to drain it from the case. I can see the utility of the extractor with removing fluid from the oil reservoir as you are capturing the oil on the reservoir side of the pump (the vast majority I assume). How do you extract the oil in the case (the remainder)? Do you also drain it from the case drain plug? I remember my Jap bikes having oil fill ports on the case. My Sporty is my first bike that has a remote oil reservoir (aside from my Kawa Triple two-stroke…different kinda oil though…the kind you don’t change)
xl1200r 8th February 2006, 14:32 I don't know...
I don't doubt the ease of use, I just doubt the ability to drain as well as the drain hose. I will say thought that it's a pain in the @$$ to use the drain hose...it's easy enough to get to, it just seems to take FOREVER, even with the engine warm and the fill cap off. I always seem to have to get on the bike after a while and sit it up staright to get the rest of the stuff out.
You guys that have been using a suction "device" for a while now, do you think you could maybe try driaing the oil the regular way and letting us know what come out of the hose (as in clean oil, dirty oil, or sludge)? I think that would be the best experiment.

Thanks man!

Exactly, at least not on the solid mount bikes. I really hope a bunch of you try the magnet thing and report your findings.
