I want to change out my gray timing cover for one that I saw on a 2006 Roadster(also changing the air cleaner insert)but none of the tools that I have seem to fit. Is this riveted on or would a star wrench work-and if so what size? I dont want to run back & forth from Sears so any help would be appreciated.

Most are riveted on, but you should be able to look at
it to find out.

Like decman said, most are riveted on. My '03 with 100th anniversary medallions came with screws in it from the factory, but that's the only one I've ever heard of with screws from the factory. A lot of folks switch to self tapping screws after changing the cover the first time.

As previously stated, it is probably riveted. Most pre '04's are I think. My '05 is held on with torx screws. If it's rivets, just carefully drill 'em out.

As Gary said, you can change over to self tapping screws or tap 'em if you want to use machine screws.

Hi lonerider and wellcome to the forum.
I think on the 06 R your timing cover will have torx screws, im not sure what size they are.

Welcome to the Forum. Its always good to change your signature and put the year and model Sporty in it so people will know what bike you have when answering your questions. Just a thought

Sorry-I should have mentioned that it is a 2004 1200c--and thanks for the welcome!

04s all have either allen head or torx screws holding the cover. Simple to take off.

no rivets

What do those 2 little screws look like to you?

I saw a timer cover once that was CLEAR, on a bobber - it was the coolest thing... not sure what it was made of - I'd be worried of it cracking, but it sure looked wicked...

My 2005 1200C has a timing cover with T-15 Torx head screws, as it came from the factory.

I had expected rivets, so I took the screws off and I saw NOTHING.

Things have changed. There is no timing stuff there. It is under the seat. So, for at least 2005, it is screws only, and in horizontal orientation.

Looks like a good place to store change for tolls.

Maybe a place to hide a spare key and an insulated tube with $20 or so.
(Suitably padded of course.)

Well I guess that answers the question I was going to ask...what exactly is behind the timing cover. :D I was thinking of changing the stocker out and wasn't sure if I'd be opening up an oil leak or something. Thanks for posting those pics!
