OK, so i painted my cylinders and heads. Used "engine paint". After i did it i had a thought "I wonder if that paint will do for a very hot running ironhead, as compared to a liquid cooled auto or industrial engine!". Hmmmm - i am kinda wishing i had asked before i bought. I'll ask them tomorrow and then ....

I use the high heat paint designed for headers and the like. I don't think you have much of a worry. Water cooled isn't necessarily any cooler. It's just more consistent.

Hey Will this popped a memory bubble...I once heard a guy say he occasioally sprayed silcon lubricant on the jugs/heads of his Ironhead, and claimed that it burnt to a nice shade of black and the overspray, well rust inhibitor....fact or fiction....Mike

He said that recently in reply to one of my previous posts about painting the engine.

VHT Barrell paint is about the best...Nice gloss black.... normal engine enamel won't handle the heat.. :(
That's what it's made for...
VHT Case paint is a satin paint and that's good enuff for evo heads and barrels..... not sure about iron head stuff tho... gets hotter..

Stevo, it'll hold up well on the Ironhead motors also. Might get a little discoloring around the exhaust outlet.

Hey Stevo,
What might happen, will it peel or flake off? just discolor? What do ya think, should i have it bead blasted off and start over?

it usually just goes sorta really faded and i've seen it burn around the exhaust area and flake off.... but if it's black then ya probably wont notice it too much...
Your call, ya may get away with it...We're in a pretty hot place over here so it may not be as bad where you are...
Ask ya self how long do you intend either keeping the bike or untill next freshen up.
I KNOW the VHT barrell paint is good in that application...

Don't know about the silicone thing. Never tried it. I have used the VHT stevo talks about with excellent results.

I just got done painting my jugs and cases tonight. I used DupliColor High Temp. It is rated for 1200 F, used for headers and the like. I also painted my pipes. The guy I got the pipes from had used the engine paint, guess how long that looked good? I am gunna post some photos of the ordeal tomorrow. I have heard good things about the VHT paint, but the duplicolor is available at most auto stores.
