View Full Version : 1200 conv. progress!
engine 22nd February 2006, 02:13 This is the first time I took my camera over to where my bike is...I've been forgetting to bring it.
Worked on the cam swap this evening, and I got some pics. In stalling Andrews V-4 (same as N-4 for 5-speeds).
Old cams out, and cam section cleaned and ready for cams:

New V-4 cams in the cam cover checking for binding or free rotation. They were smooth as glass (or ass)! I can't wait!

Cams in plase in the motor. I got the timing marks lined up in the first try. The first pic is with using a flash, the second pic is w/o flash. The non-flash pic came out kind of blurry and I tried to fix it in Photoshop...still not the best.
Note the #3 and #4 cam marks look to be a little off, that's because after putting them in, the flywheel rotated a tad and the cams moved., but the others are dead on in the pic. Also the angle of the camera maked the mark look off for the #2-#3 marks...I checked and triple checked that the marks lined up.

I had to take the cam cover back home to clean it out. Scraping the gasket material off the cover, and a lot of it went into the cover. Gotta clean it out good.
rx3732 22nd February 2006, 16:46 cool! Thanks for the pics and thanks for taking the time to do this for us!
mhamden 22nd February 2006, 17:14 Thanks for the update, and congrats on getting the 1200 conversion. Can't wait till next winter should be doing mine.

cantolina 22nd February 2006, 17:43 Thanx for the pics...I've never been in this part of the bike....
Makes it seem not quite so intimidating...

Yeah, I REALLY didn't want to take that cover off, but once it was off, it was no-sweat.
Good thing I have bolt-ins, because I'm not ready for high lift valve interaction at this time...Maybe if I had a lift at home in the garage and plenty of time...but the bike is about 10 miles from home and I'm working with the bike on the kickstand...
Dan told me that my jugs/pistons, heads and pushrods will go out today, so I'm guessin' I'll get them middle or late next week. I might have her up and running in a couple weeks!
Preacher 23rd February 2006, 00:57 Sweetness man, you are doing it yourself and that earns you mad respect in my eyes.... I didn't have the nads to do it myself.
On the flip side, you are going to LOVE it when you are done, and problably even more because you did the work yourself.

Thanks.
I ALMOST didn't do it myself. But then I figured, what the hell? I rebuild 3-stage centrifugal compressors that cost $250,000 (new); how hard can a sportster be?
and all the extra little stuff I have to spend time on, like carefully scraping baked-on gasket material from the cam cover, cleaning the pushrod covers, cleaning up the rocker boxes...do you know how mych $$$ a pro shop would have charged me? Probably enough for my wife to divorce my ass. By me doing it myself, I can actually hide the costs...:shhhh

Did my 88 without a lift. No sweat. I'm kind of wondering why anyone would need a lift anyway. Seems like it would be just another thing to get in the way.

I would think it's easier to work while sitting or standing, and not crawling around on knees and belly...

I just used a small seat. It was no problem.
The only thing I had to crawl on my back for was the breather tube routing right at the end.
engine 26th February 2006, 04:29 I got the cam cover and sprocket covers back on tonight. New tappets are in, new o-rings on the guides. Rotated the motor, aeverything spind okey-dokey. Checked the cam timing by looking at the tappets in the guides as they go up and down when they are supposed to with relation to piston stroke (Intake, compression, power strokes...etc). Looks good.
Now I'm pretty much waiting for the jugs to arrive...

hawaiian 28th February 2006, 06:02 good work!
engine 10th March 2006, 08:57 I've been working on the bike a lot lately, and have been forgetting to bring my camera,
As of tonight, progress since the pictures i posted, the NRHS pistons, jugs, SE heads, rocker boxes, intake & carb are all on the bike. I turned the engine over by hand after the rockers went on and everything moved great, no binding of any kind.
Ran into an issue with my carb backing plate bracket. Since I'm using the SE heads for 91-up engines, the mounting holes in the heads are bigger, so I tried to hog them out. But other clost tolerances of how the backing plate is cast will prevent the bolts from going in straight and with enough clrearance to tighten them. I have to get a new backing plate for 91-up motors.
Hopefully, if the Indy has the plate in the shop (he has to look) I may be able to get it and possibly fire it up tomorrow evening????

Good deal, dude!
Don't be in a hurry...
Best of luck to you!

I have a Screamin Eagle AC setuo, If you want to pick it up it's yours.
DM-SC 10th March 2006, 15:16 Glad to hear you're making progress! :smoke
Little things like the backing plate problem...once solved...just add to the feeling of accomplishment once your done! :D
engine 11th March 2006, 05:35 The bike is just about DONE....just about...
Still left to do are:
1. Torque the plugs in
2. replace oil filter
3. add new oil
4. hook up battery
5. lube throttle cables
6. add gasoline
7. turn on, press start botton
8. pray that it runs...
I went on a parts run to another bike shop called Rolling Thunder on Long Island. Pretty well established place, and the guys there really know their stuff. I was talking about my bike and the trouble I've run into, and they had solutions right away.
I was going to buy a new S&S backing plate for 91-up XL's, and it would fit no-prob, but I then was going to make the head breathers functional.
They said that I really shouldn't since i have the bottom breather, and that having both would be pointless, and that I should save money on something that will make the bike actually run better.
I bought a shim kit for the backing plate, some button head bolts for the breather holes, exhaust gaskets. THey had everything. I was very impressed with this shop. Too bad it's so far away from my house...
I also bought this:
http://www.spyke1.com/krankvents.htm
basically a check valve for the breather system to not let air back into the crank case and aerate the oil. They say it works, and the bike should run better. They also said the exhaus t note will change some...we'll see.
I'll probably get to start it on Monday.
I have to find that Stev-O-approved break in procedure I read here a while back.
paxman1 11th March 2006, 07:19 I love the pictures, better than words. Great information. How about step by step on the rest of the build? Thanks for the time and effort. That is what I enjoy about this forum. All the info :D
