Ride it like you want and have fun. Shu 1st February 2005, 19:48 In all honesty, when you do a 1200 conversion, all you are breaking in are the pistons rings. And those have to be bedded in rather quickly. DO NOT LET IT SIT AND IDLE FOR VERY LONG, just take it out, run it up through the gears at about 1/2 to 3/4 throttle and up to about 4,000 rpms and then let the gearing slow the bike down, while down shifting at about 3,000 rpms each time. THis will seat your rings good and quick and provide a very good seal for a long time to come. twinsporty 1st February 2005, 19:52 Thanks Shu you added all those extra's that I was too lazy to through in there. As I so eloquintly stated although in too few words, it is only the rings and cylinder wall that you are breakin in so follow Shu's advice and your good to go. Shu 1st February 2005, 20:05 Didn't mean to sound like I repeated your post, just wanted to let bud095 know that you were serious by adding a ditto. twinsporty 1st February 2005, 21:02 Hey Shu no problem. I should have added the explaination like you did. I am not offended just corrected. Shu 1st February 2005, 21:04 Not Corrected, just confirmed:) bud095 1st February 2005, 21:25 put 50 miles on today 45 degrees but it sure was fun! :D :D :D :D :D dlclark804 2nd February 2005, 03:19 i am new to the list and was wanting to know the least expensive way to convert ,bore 883 cylinders?dos this work well?any ideals where to purchase kit . bud095 2nd February 2005, 03:54 i had the dealer do it gift $ 899 +200 for hyper charger + tax =1200$ txsporty 2nd February 2005, 04:03 I bought my stuff at Chicgo HD on the net, saved a bunch!!!! Going to do it myself, cost me about $700.00 plus my time!!! Oh, and about a case of Bud!!! :yikes ;) aswracing 2nd February 2005, 04:23 I recommend fitting the pistons as opposed to buying cylinders and pistons off the shelf and assuming they fit together properly. Seasoned cylinders are also preferred over new ones. We have a couple packages available here: http://www.nrhsperformance.com/ekit8831200.shtml These are premium packages that include forged pistons and Cometic EST gaskets. Shu 2nd February 2005, 15:54 dlclark804, Boring the cylinders or buying 1200 cylinders is a toss up. Several companie make pistons, including HD with their Screamin Eagle pistons. V-Twin, HD, and several others make all the parts for a simple bolt-on conversion. Read through the conversion section of the foruma nd it should answer many of your questions. Shu JohnnyV 2nd February 2005, 23:58 What about the cheap piston/jug kits you find on E-Bay for under $300.00 bux, anyone know much about them? Shu 3rd February 2005, 15:58 Just read the sellers descripton carefully and make sure you are getting what you want. Be aware that some parts are out there for this conversion that may not be of top quality. I just browsed around a little on there and there are a couple of kits that are good quality, but they will most likely be sold in the $400 range. To compare that to the HD parts...Chicago HD sells for 20% off and so will most dealers if you ask or is you are a HOG member. The Cylinders list for $139.95 each and the piston kit is around $279.95. Total = $559.85 - 20% = $447.88 + $50 for a gasket kit and you are right at $500.00 for the package. Shop wisely. Flamin883 15th February 2005, 23:01 What about the cheap piston/jug kits you find on E-Bay for under $300.00 bux, anyone know much about them? Don't know nothing about them, BUT when NRHS will bore your seasond jugs match their pistons, tool steel pins & gaskets every thing you need except maybe $30 -$50 orings gaskets jets and misc. nuts and bolts. for $500 why would you want a fly by night kit????? Unless downtime is an Issue, I bet ya Arron has em a week 3-4 days there 3-4 back so their gone for 2 weeks. Unless somebody gets the bright idea to steal them, UPS, long story. Any way I've said this numerous times, but I'll say it again. Unless you just really want to tinker & reinvent the wheel, call HQ or Nallin, they both are top notch with proven packages for preformance. THEY HAVE ALREADY DONE YOUR HOMEWORK. I have NEVER heard a bad word, only praise for them in the past on this site as well as THE LIST. cantolina 15th February 2005, 23:06 i am new to the list and was wanting to know the least expensive way to convert ,bore 883 cylinders?dos this work well?any ideals where to purchase kit . Least expensive? Get the HD Screamin Eagle 1200 pistons (10:1)..Have your 883's bored out to 1200.....don't touch the rest of the top end unless mileage dictates,,,, James or Cometic gasket set and have at it... Should be less than $700.00... pquirk 15th February 2005, 23:33 Least expensive? Seems like Nallins would be cheaper. I'm curious if there's a reason you don't like the Nallins kit? Flamin883 18th February 2005, 15:24 Cantolina, what am I missing, $500 is less than $700? But brar in mind those same costs will come no mater what kit/ parts you buy. So Nallin looks like they get my recomendation. Desertfox 18th February 2005, 16:14 i am new to the list and was wanting to know the least expensive way to convert ,bore 883 cylinders?dos this work well?any ideals where to purchase kit . If you do the work yourself , no head work, you can get away for around $500.00 for a Weisco kit on ebay. There are basically three ways you can have it done. 1.fast 2.cheap 3. well You can pick any two. traveler 20th February 2005, 21:50 I'm thinkin' Nallin. If you come up with the money you can get their 1250cc kit which they say is the largest you can go without boring out the cases. I also like the idea of being able to go with a set of ported Buell heads at the same time, but again, we're talking big $$$$, but I'm personally going to wait and save up and do the heads and cams at the same time. joe cantolina 20th February 2005, 22:30 i am new to the list and was wanting to know the least expensive way to convert ,bore 883 cylinders?dos this work well?any ideals where to purchase kit . If you're handy enough to do the the work yourself, have your dealer (or favorite Indy) bore them to 1200 AFTER you buy pistons (I went with the screamin eagles...10:1..no head changes... You'll need the service manual, but the rest is not that tough.... Total cost- <700.00 US (all parts and boring) |
