Im thinking about making my own oil tank, like the round style. Has anyone done this, and how hard is it? Do u have coat the inside of the tank after, or can u just leave the bare metal. I have a pretty good idea on how to make it, but it some insight would sure help. Thanks.

You might PM 9fingerkustomz . He did all of his sheet metal and tank on his project bike.

Just be careful. I used a later year oil tank on my sporty and the oiling systems worked differently. My 93 had different hose configuaration and later bikes appear to pressurize the oil system. Long story short. I drove around for 15 minutes and then the noises started. The engine equired a complete rebuild and I got to get a new oil tank. No flow at all eventhough all the plumbing appeared correct. Lesson learned.

I made a oil tank for my '69 Ironhead. I cut a fire extinguisher in half, shortened it, welded in the spigots, and welded the hole in the end. Came out lookin pretty good, better if I had taken a little more time and had really wanted it to look perfect.

On a scale of 1-10 the difficulty was bout a 5, the expense was about a 0 and the satisfaction of doing it myself is a 10.

I also just last weekend made one for my Twisted Choppers drop seat frame and all I did was use 5" exh pipe cut to 11" overall with a angle to form to the frame, short side is 9", and welded/caped up the ends, added (3) 1/4 npt bungs, one on the bottom for feed and two on top, one or a vent and one for return. I ended up with 3.2 qt tank. I also pressure tested it before I added the fill tube with 30 psi of air pressure and a hr later it still had 30 so Im not going to line the inside with anything. Total cost was $0.:smoke gotta love working in a truck shop where metal is available. time wise it took me about 2 hrs to make it - the fill tube.
