View Full Version : Where is the 20W - 50 Hiding?
DAKSY 5th March 2006, 23:47 Hey, XLers!
I'm starting to get psyched cuz Spring is 15 days away & even tho it's 12 deg outside it's gonna get here soon!
Anyhoo, where can I get the correct weight Motor Oil? At the 1000 mile change, I took her to the Stealer & they put in synthetic - at my request.
I figger I oughta change the oil for the new season, but I can't find any synthetic 20W - 50 anywhere I've looked...Granted, I've only checked out Wally World, Sam's & the local NAPA store, but none of them carry the correct weight. I'm open to whatever you guys/gals suggest, whether it's Mobil 1 or HD synth or Amsoil...
BTW, any Amsoil dealers (on this list) close to the Albany, NY area?
TIA,
Bob Smith

Think about this?
20/50 is 20/50?
I would recommend the Harley syn oil
the choice is yours:)

kdarejr 6th March 2006, 00:22 i get mine from the autozone or advanced auto !! but its not cheap seems like the prices have gone up !!!
DAKSY 6th March 2006, 00:23 Hey, Mr. Jimi!
I thought about HD synth as soon as I posted...Brunswick HD is about 15 miles away & not on my normal to/from work route...I spoze I oughta just go outta my way & grab some there, huh?

Sounds like a good reason to take the long way home. :smoke
a45junkie 6th March 2006, 00:46 ur wallmart must suck ours has like four different brands of syn 20/50
vicks44 6th March 2006, 00:52 Our Wal-mart has a good supply of bike stuff also, V-twin 20/50 dino and all the synthetics, plus helmets, gloves, cleaning products, tools, locks and cables.

Your up in that cold-ass New York. If I was up there where the polar bears live, it wouldn't bother me one bit to put 15w-50 in the motor.
Jeeeze, I live in Arizona and still use 15w-50 year round (that old Mobil 1 'red cap' that was just discontinued).
MOREHP 6th March 2006, 01:26 You aint kiddin, I was changing the oil in the primary yesterday (a balmy 35*) and had the fill screw out waiting for it to flow out and the 20-50 was too thick to flow out. Had to dump it and measure it before I put it back in.
streeteagle2 6th March 2006, 02:02 15w-50 makes sense in colder latitudes-especially synthetic. It starts flowing faster in cold starts & I read where 85 to 90% of your engine wear occurs in cold starts. I ended up having to order my Mobil-1 20W-50 from Autobarn, could'nt find it anywhere around these parts. :wonderlan
IronMick 6th March 2006, 02:26 I use Mobile1 Syn 15W50. There is no doubt lots of other good stuff, but there is nothing better.
DAKSY 6th March 2006, 04:09 Guess I gotta check a coupla other Walmarts...The closest one didn't have ANY 15w-50 OR 20w-50 in either Synth or Dino...I'll check whatever I'm near during the day tomorrow, & if I can't find what I want I'll head to the stealer...
Thanx for all the input!

I also run 15w50 Motul semi-syn all year round in all my bikes (2 Guzzis, BMW R1100S, Ducati ST4S-A).
883Cwk 9th March 2006, 03:15 The only 20W50 Mobile 1 the Wal-mart in Topeka had was V-Twim specific. $7.54 a quart! I think a chrome Fram oil filter was about $9.00.
I think buying the stuff at the stealer might be the way to go. :(

You're lucky! The only place to carry it in Milwaukee is Autozone. They charge 8.50/qt and you have to ask someone to get it out the back stock room.
Cheers,

DAKSY 12th March 2006, 15:39 Hey XLers...
It got to the mid 40s here in Upstate NY so I took her for a ride to the local
(Brunswick HD) "stealer" & grabbed 4 qts of the HD synth & the o-ring. It was
$8.95 a qt, but If I'd gotten it somewhere else, I still woulda hadda get the O-ring there so WTF...I'll get to the change later in the week...I installed the K&N filter yesterday before the run, so with the CS slip-ons installed I have the "easy" 50% of the "TAX" paid...
She's nice & Harley Loud with minimal carb farts! After about 40 chilly miles of quality ridin & so-many "waves" that my left arm hurts, I spent the rest of the day workin on the house with a big ole grin on my face!
The GF said "Geez, Bob, it wasn't much of a ride..."
Nope, but it was a RIDE, & there's gonna be many MORE!
Ronn39 20th March 2006, 02:55 Wally World here in my area didn't have it either. I found the Mobile I V-Twin synthetic at the local Advance Auto store. Eight bucks a quart, but she's worth it.
decman 20th March 2006, 04:06 Like Mick I use the Mobil1 15w-50 ($5) also.
I've also used the Napa 15w-50 at $4.
SportTrans for the primary ($5)
If you are really picky order Royal Purple (or others) on line
still about $5
You can pay more for the V-twin labeled stuff but it won't be
any better.
sspeer 20th March 2006, 15:35 I noticed that the Sprawl Mart in my area had the 15W50 M1 EP jugs with red tags on it. It wasn't a deal (I think they do that just to see if people will buy it thinking it's on sale), but it makes me wonder if they're going to stop stocking it. I didn't see any quarts of it on the shelves..
I still have half a case of Valvoline Syn 20w50 after my break-in with the upgrade..but I had used the M1 15w50 without problems...the bike seemed to run about 10 degrees cooler
RICOB1 21st March 2006, 17:47 I go to an IronHorse dealership here in town, they carry Amsoil 20w50 for 7.95 quart. They also carry K&N oil filters chrome or black. So I just get it all there. They never try to sell me anything extra. Good folks to do business with.
Casper 21st March 2006, 18:03 I use 20w50 syn Mobil1, and I can find it at pretty much any Crappy Tire in the area. I've had more trouble getting the filter off than finding the oil.
mhamden 21st March 2006, 18:20 I run Castrol Syntec 20-50 in mine. Also use 10-30 Syntec in my truck have not had no problems with it. Cost about $5.05 at walmart or something like that and is full syntetic not like most syntetic oils
decman 22nd March 2006, 00:15 mhamden,
The're folks at Mobil and Amzoil that will argue with you.
It's good oil, I've used it, but do a search on "mobil vs castrol synthetic"
You will find some interesting reading.
