View Full Version : Removing the lower "belt" guard on an '05

Taxes are about to be paid.

The Hurricane Flow AC is on. The stock pipes are off; the V & H Short Shots should be here, and on the scoot, by Tuesday; and the re-jetting with a No Hassle Kit done Thursday at the indy's.

Can't wait! :banapart

Question:

Anyone see a problem with taking the lower belt guard off? I've got a chrome sprocket cover and chrome mag wheels and I'm thinkin' you could see both a little better with the lower plastic belt guard removed; especially with the new pipes. Just didn't know if the guard is really necessary to protect the belt, etc.

Thanks for any thoughts.

So how do you measure belt tension? The measurement guide is on the lower belt guard.

I guess I can just pop the lower guard back on to take the measurement.

If I remember right, it's only about three bolts that holds the guard on. On and off in like a minute or two. Okay, maybe five or six for me. :doh

The guard is of no help on my 1200R, not even close. I use a Stanley Tape and the belt tension guage - works fine. The instructions are lousy anyway - measure with a rider, measure without.(?) What BS! Depending on where you are reading instructions it's different. It's probably most important to get 10 lbs pressing on it.

what belt guard, you mean it's suposed to have one.
that funny plastic[ugley] vapor canister is missing also. maybe it fell off going down the road. it took the vacume hoses with it.

Its 3 machine screws. 3/8 heads on em. And the guard is slotted so you can loosen them and slip it back and slip the thing off without totaly removing the screws. You could then use the screws to plug the holes even. I think if I take it off again I might do that. Keeps the threads clean and keeps water out of that part of the frame.

Reason its so fresh in my mind is I just put mine back on an hour ago. I am installing bags back there so it don't matter. You can hardly see in there with bags in the way. Might as well have em on before the bags get in the way of my view to install them.

Just a tip! Place a little "anti seize" lube on the three screws before replacing them. Under frame hardware can get pretty cranky to loosen when needed.

Gee thats funny... because I was almost going to post to lock tight them to keep them from falling out! :D

So does that make me the pesimist or are you? ;)

The upper belt guard on the rubbermounts is plastic?

After reading these...I just went out to the garage and pulled both of mine. I am sure that my better half won't like it, but....I do!!!!

When I picked up my '05 1200C one of the first things I did was to remove the plastic lower belt guard, or, as they call it, "debris deflector".

By design, it's more of a pant leg deflector than anything else. It covers the belt from the top (foot) and from the right side of the bike (pant leg), but offers little belt protection from items under the bike or from rocks/gravel or anything thrown back from the front wheel.

I think its main purpose is to stop rocks or whatever jamming between the belt and the sprocket. Probably more of a problem if you ride on dirt roads.
