View Full Version : The Calm Before The Storm
Fork 7th March 2006, 13:55 Hello Everyone!!
I have got a project going. What started out as a small project having the heads reworked has turned into a big project. This is what I have going on right now. Some things may be added or deleted as money holds up.
1. Stage 2 head work done by NRHS.
2. Bore cylinders and new pistons also done by NRHS.
3. Update the neck bearings. It had the old style ball bearings but now has the new style Timken Bearings.
4. New top triple tree and reseal the forks.
5. Rewire the bike. She is 33 years old and has had her harness cut up beyond belief.
6. New LED tail light. I have picked out the Wide Tombstone style. It will fit the Old School Style of my bike.
7. Install a Crane Hi 4 Ignition System.
8. All new switches in the switch boxes.
9. All switch box wires to be run internally in the handle bars.
10. Paint the tank and rear fender.
Thats about all I can think of for now. I will be sure and keep everyone updated on the progress.

Bow6 7th March 2006, 14:34 Bring'm on and good luck with the project...
Fork 7th March 2006, 23:51 Thanks guys! I will be taking some pictures of her this weekend. As she sits now its a pitifull site. She has no front end and only half a motor. I should be sending the heads and jugs off any day now.
I will also be working on the handle bar wiring this weekend. Plenty of pictures are on the way.
Thanks again!!!
Fork 8th March 2006, 00:07 I forgot that I had a few prelim pics to share.

Here you can see why I would have no compression. :shhhh :shhhh

And you can see by these 2 pictures why the harness had to go. Butt connectors in the harness are a no no to me. I had to put these in when I first got her because the harness was so cut up. It was really bad. But not anymore because its laying on the floor now.
Thanks everyone!!!
I put the same picture in twice. Sorry about that guys.
IronMick 8th March 2006, 02:56 I love seeing an abused bike, especially an old ironhead, being brought back to life. Good to go.
Fork 8th March 2006, 13:06 Its always bothered me that the harness was in such bad shape. I figured with the time between shipping out the heads and cylinders that it would be the perfect time to go ahead and rewire her also. Not to mention the neck bearings and forks.
BobboJama 8th March 2006, 13:48 Sounds like your going to have a bunch of fun... Can't wait to see it when it's done... Post pics as you go..
DM-SC 8th March 2006, 14:25 Looks like you have a bit of work to do...that harness looks like lots of fun. :D
Gone 8th March 2006, 15:12 good luck with the rewire project, just finished the same job on the wifes trike. Glad to see you are putting so much work into you old scoot. looking forward to updates.

Fork 9th March 2006, 01:50 :doh :doh :doh :doh
Things just keep getting better. I was just inspecting my forks and found that the spring guides were not there. I guess that I can just add that to the list of other :censor that was messed up on my girl when I got her.
But on the good side I got a box of goodies from JP Cycles today. So with the wonderful weather we will have this weekend I will be able to get the handle bar wiring done!!
Fork 9th March 2006, 16:59 I have read several of the posts for sealing the forks. They have all been really informative but I am not sure if they apply to a bike as old as mine. Mine is just going to be a reseal and I am not lowering or anything like that.
The spring guides are gone and I dont know why they would have been removed by the PO. They are only listed in the HD Parts manual for 2 years , mine being one of them. I have the Kayaba Style Forks. Also the springs are level with the top of the fork tube. Is this correct or should they stick out a bit?
Thanks again everyone!!
a45junkie 9th March 2006, 18:19 usually they should stick out some, god knows what springs are in there, i think i would leave it alone unless you have sag issues/ bottoming out, then put in a spacer.
Fork 10th March 2006, 09:15 Well I have good news to report. I wont be messin with the old front end. I have made the choice to buy the 41mm Front End from JP Cycles.
Now thats a load off!!

Fork 13th March 2006, 12:40 Well today is the day. The heads and cylinders are on their way to Dan and the crew at NRHS. I am headed out to the UPS Store as soon as they open. I cant wait to get them back and see how she runs. I have plenty to do while they are gone though. I will keep everyone updated as the build progresses.
Thanks Everyone!!!
Fork 17th March 2006, 19:09 I just got off the phone with Dan at NRHS and my heads and cylinders just arrived there safe and sound.
Its almost time to start ordering my other parts so I will update as the info becomes available.

Randum77 17th March 2006, 19:23 cool, i can't wait to see a finished product. :)

kdarejr 1st April 2006, 02:17 as long as you are there are you going to stretch the frame a little !!! looking forward to you progress pictures !!!
Fork 11th April 2006, 16:42 Alot of things have happened this week on my project. My place now looks like a motorcycle parts store inside. I also just got an email from Dan at NRHS and will have my heads and cylinders back on Thursday.
I am getting another order ready for the folks at JP Cycles. One thing that I have learned is this. If you are going to do a project like mine jon the JP Cycles Gold Club. I have really saved a ton of money so far by joining.
I will have some more pictures this weekend for you all to look at.
Thanks Everyone,
Fork
Fork 20th April 2006, 12:35 I went to do a test fit of the triple trees on my frame last night and things did not go very well. So I have a few questions for all of you. JP Tech Dept is also checking into it now for me.
1. Has anyone else installed a wide glide kit form JP Cycles on their bike?
2. There is a threaded spacer with the kit. It screws done on the stem after the lower tree is put up thru the neck. This spacer has 2 shoulders on it , one on each end. One shoulder , which is the largershoulder , seems to fit the hole in the top tree and the smaller shoulder presses down on the dust cap for the top bearing. Its almost like that shoulder should not be there.
Does anyone have any input on this?
3. The spacer did not when tightened have any effect on the motion of the lower tree when installed? On the old front end when I tightened the top nut that the top tree fit on it had a direct effect on the motion of the trees.
Any input is always appreciated. If anyone has any questions please let me know so that I can get right back to you on it.
Thanks again!!
Fork 21st April 2006, 10:42 Here are some pictures to support the questions that I asked.
Thanks again!!
