for the people who has used these oils in their trans, I would like to know your results. have you kept it in your bike, if you changed back to hd and did it make any more noise.
thanks

I used syn3 in my tranny for the 5,000 change but switched back to sport-trans at 10,000. For me the tranny seemed to be quieter and smoother. Just my opinion.

I use and recommend Mobil 1 full synth 75-90wt gear oil in my primary.

I do not notice any increased noise, but I do notice much smoother clutch engagement than when I had Syn3 in there. Shifting is as smooth as the syn3, but without the rough clutch engagment.

You can't go wrong with either Mobil1 or amsoil gear oil...especially since they seem to be priced the same.

I use Amsoil and am real pleased with it, see no need to change brands. But, it is just "one of many" good brands.

Arn't these a little on the heavy side for tranny use? I hear lots of guys using Mobil1 15W50 [and similar HD and AMS] in the tranny as well as in the engine. But this is the first post on here since the forum started where someone has posted about using these heavy oils. Where did you get your info?

2 HD dealer and an indy all recommended amsoil 20-50 for the oil and trans thats what I've been running and in over 40k combined miles never had any problems

FWIW-- the HD dealers both sold and installed the 20-50 when the bikes were still under warrenty

The number on the jug can be misleading when discussing 'gear' vs. 'motor' oil viscosity.

"The following chart shows the relationship of "real" viscosity to their S.A.E. assigned numbers. The relationship of gear oils to engine oils is also shown.

__________________________________________________ _____________
| |
| SAE Gear Viscosity Number |
| __________________________________________________ ______ |
| |75W |80W |85W| 90 | 140 | |
| |____|_____|___|______________|___________________ _____| |
| |
| SAE Crank Case Viscosity Number |
| ____________________________ |
| |10| 20 | 30 | 40 | 50 | |
| |__|_____|____|_____|______| |
__________________________________________________ ____________
2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16 18 20 22 24 26 28 30 32 34 36 38 40 42
viscosity cSt @ 100 degrees C

Strange, but true....

Mick, the chart Sage has is accurate. if you look on the trans-primary section of this forum there is alot of talk about different trans oils, ( do a search also ) and also got information on bob is the oil guy .com.
