Two Of The Teeth Are Completly Gone! The Rest Are Shot And Broke In Chips. The Books Call The Piece I Need The Armature. If That Is Correct Let Me Know. Jireh Cycles Has It For $65.00. I Am Getting Fed Up At This Point, I Was So Close To Having It Running And Then The Starter Fukd Up. My Question Is No. 1 Is The Armature What I Need To Get The Starter Going Again.

No.2 I Am To The Point Of Wanting To Make It A Kick Only Bike. My Problem Is The Guy Didn't Have Kicker Exhaust, So I Would Need To Buy A Set Of Kicker Pipes. And I Need The Coverplate To Replace Where The Starter Was. I Could Get Those All For About $150.00

If I Get The Starter Going I Can Keep The Shitty Exhaust That Is On It Now, But It Will Still Need Replaced Soon Enough.

And I've Never Kicked A Bike, Does A Bike Have To Be In Top Running Shape Before It Will Kick Over, I've Never Even Heard The Bike Run More Than 3 Seconds, And That Wasn't Until Last Night As Many Of You Know, So The Conditon Of The Drivetrain Is Still Pretty Unknown. I'm Trying To Get This Going For My Local Forr's Poker Run On March 18th. That Is About 7 Days From Now. So I'm In A Bit Of A Rush. Any Recommendations Are Highly Appreciated. Thanks! OH, WITH THE REAR EXHAUST PIPE OFF SO I CAN KICK THE BIKE, WOULD IT BE BAD TO RUN THE BIKE THAT WAY FOR A FEW MINUTES AT A TIME TO GET IT RUNNING RIGHT. ?? OR SHOULD I WAIT ON THE PROPER EXHAUST.

There is a VERY SERIUOS condition known as Sportster Knee. The best advice is to not even THINK about kicking it until you get all of the other problems solved.

If you really think it is ready to run you could push start it. Get to the top of a hill, turn the fuel on, twist the throttle a couple times to squirt some fuel in the carb throat, turn the key on, put it in 2nd, keep the clutch lever in, run with it, hop on, release the clutch lever.

Not too big of a hill - you may have to push it back up!

My personal observation: you may need to find some more patience. Do not focus on that upcoming ride. Rather, focus on one aspect of the bike at a time, get that aspect into good condition, then go on to another. Make working on the bike what you enjoy doing as opposed to getting it ready to ride. Working on an ol' iron is cool and fun in itself. Riding comes much later - when you know the bike inside out [which it appears you do not at this point, eh] and you have confidence in it.

I agree with Mick, take it easy. I dont mean to be a buzz kill but getting it running is only the start of it all. After you get it to go you got to get it to stop. If it has been neglected ya gotta worry about the wheel bearings the neck bearing and the ones in the swingarm. old rusty connections are going to vibrate lose, leaks, clutch, ect. ect. ect. It is great working on a bike but dont rush it, if it aint safe the thing will kill ya. I had a old norton that F:censor ed my knee all up from kicking. Go with the starter than if you want add a kick (and youll be glad you have a starter)if you want. Again I dont mean to be an ass I just would hate to see ya bang yourself up or worse. Take it easy be safe.

will it hurt the primary chain to be exposed on the starter side. the primary cover is still on the bike. Also, on the petcock on the fatbob tank, the lever was horizontal but backwars, I turned it horizontal where the fuel shows on top of the lever, is that right, when I twist the throttle I get no gas, I assume this setup workson gravity feed, not a feul pump of any kind. I have run all new lines and new clamps, the bike was running as long as i'd shoot fuel to the carb. If i can get it shooting fuel with the twist throttle, I may be able to push start it, thanks again, i forgot all about that in my rush to get it going. I will slow down, i'm just so damn proud to own a harley and one like my dad would have rode, that i'm anxious to ride it. I'll go with the new armiture, but i doubt a harley dealer will have one in stock, as i doubt any of the custom shops will either. Thanks!
