View Full Version : Passing light install question

I am installing a H-D passing light set-up on my 2005 XL 883Low.
The directions say to remove the fuel tank, which in my case is a peanut (small tank) in order to run the wire harness to the connectors under the seat. My question is do I really have to remove the tank???
If so can I follow Bert"s tech tip on this site for my model and year?
Thanks
JE

I've never worked on new bikes but I would think you could run the wires without removing the tank , but then youd have some ugly wires showing and thats not kool

the tank sould be easy enuff to remove , just take your time and think things out while your doing it

good luck

You may be able to remove the rear bolts of the tank and tilt the tank up to give you enough clearance to pass wires thru

Removing the tank is pretty much necessary. I installed fog lights a couple months ago. Running the harness and getting it right where you want it is hard enough with the tank off so I can only imagine how much extra work it would be with the tank on.

One of my buddies just put lights on his bike. Remove the tank and save yourself a bunch of headaches. He tried doing it with the tank on and finally gave up and removed the tank; this after a couple hours wasted trying to do it with the tank on.

I took the tank off following Berts tech post, (thanks Bert) it was easy.
Got the passing lights installed with the signal lights relocated. I have just a little easy wire work left to do and I will be done. Saved a bunch of money
doing it myself.
Thanks

I completed the passing light install with directional relocate. I saved about
$300. doing it myself. Yes, it all works. That's money I can spend on more parts. Now I only need about $700 more for a 1200 conversion.:D
It really changed the look of the front end of the bike. Now if someone in a car coming toward me doesn't see me they gots-to-be blind.

Hey JE..how bout a pic NOW so we can see ur work? Also, wondering how ALL u guys wired ur switch. Did u wire into existing harness? How do ya turn on ur "passing" lights?
I couldn't imagine having done mine withOUT taking the tank off. FINALLY...at night I can see...and lots of times I turn them on during daylight rides so those "mofo's" can see me better.

I have a set I may put on tomorrow.Got em brand new in box on e-bay for 240 with smoked lenses. I think I will drill a hole in the back/side of the headlight bucket. I'm not crazy about the switch being on my clutch bracket.

I'm not crazy about the switch being on my clutch bracket.

Why?
The switch doesn't disrupt a thing.

Because I have my wiring inside my bars and I don't like the looks of the bracket and button on the chrome housings. Just a personal choice.

Have you changed your bars from standard? Have you any pics posted?

Yeah , I put 4 in risers on and put on some chrome FXDL bars. I just drilled where the dimple is and drill a hole at the bottom of the bars between the risers. I used some stainless braid to cover the 4inched you see. I'll see if I have a good pic of them.

Looks good. It might be a dumb question but was it a big difference at night time? I have the smoked lenses and hope they are not to dark.

I got the halogen lamps and they would light up a ball field. I didn't put them on for night rides but to be seen during the day by people in cars. Now a even blind person will know I am there... they will feel the heat from the lamps.

Thanks.
Those lights along with the chrome tach/speedo set-up really changed the whole look of the front of the bike and all the chrome I think looks good too.
