I just had the me 880's put on my bike its a 1998 sporster 883 hugger I love them they replaced the stock dunlops and are so much better in so many ways.I did make a mistake though we tried a 140 on the rear and beacuse the bike is so low the side wall was rubbing the inner fender strut bolts so I was forced back to a 130 but I cant tell the diffrence really. The first thing I noticed was how stiff the tires were for the first 50 or 60 miles it was like a freakin stage coach then the tires loosened up and are real nice and smooth now and grip like a mofo.Curves I was afraid to take at 20 or 30 before I can blast at 40 easy now I am in love with my sporty allover again and these tires show no signs of wear after a long hard day of bashing them. The main thing I noticed was how good the bike now stops it would just slide before now it STOPS when I want it to although I now need the progressive fork springs to keep the front from diving while braking did I mention I LOVE THESE TIRES:banana If anybody wants to see the places where the 140 was rubbing post up I will post pics for all to see.

Looking for a new rear tire right now, looks like it would be wise to change from the "HD default" Dunlope to Metzeler ?

Well, I've always advised people to consider that.
Over the years I made the change on both my old solidmount Sporty and my EVO RK and the handling difference was noticeable on both bikes. I was QUITE happy with tread life too.
I plan on the same change when my wife's 883L finally gets through her first set of stock Dungflops.

Whenever anyone asks for advice on tires I get on the Metz 880 bandwagon..
I'm on my 2nd set and plan to stay with 'em next time.

I don't really need new rubber right now, but I am considering getting rid of the Dunlops sooner than later. Is it the touring version that is the right style for and '05 883 Custom?

When it comes to a heavy cruiser type bike like h-d's metzeler 880's and avon venoms are the best out there. They both handle great and both give you alot of miles, but in the rain i would give the nod to the 880's. You can't go wrong with both of these tires for our type of bikes, that's what there made for.

I'll be getting Metz's for a few reasons. First off, I would try them anyways just based on what people say about them.
But more importantly, with the sizes I'm going to, the 880 is the ONLY tire in exsistance that makes both of my sizes in the same tire.
So I'm a little limited anyways...
