Changed my oil tonight per the manual. Looks like I should have researched here first.:doh :doh

The manual says to add 3.6 quarts minus the 4oz. you put in the filter. Oil level looked way high to me and research here with Bert's oil change thread says to add 3 quarts minus the 4oz.

Going out now to drain 1/2 quart out of the bike. :frownthre :frownthre

Thanks for the thread Bert :clap :clap just wish I had been smart enough to read the forum in conjunction with my manual as it seems to have some anomalies.

just be happy that you caught berts post before you took it for a ride and when it warmed up it started puking oil out of the oil tank cap all over your bike. would have been one big mess on the side of the bike.

i only put 3 quarts in our sports ! puts the level right between the lines ! i like to run the oil just a little above the bottom line on the stick or the wifes pukes it out the breather !!!!

Make it easy on yourself.
Find a length of hose, siphon it back out of the tank.
I used two foot long piece of garden hose, the first time I did my oil,and believed the manual.

I've done the same thing-I used a turkey baster to "adjust " the oil level.

Thanks for the tips guys, but I wanted to get the air out of the drain line like Bert's post said to do so that's where I'll drain it.

I don’t know if it’s BS or not, but one of my running buddies, an experienced HD (shade tree) mechanic told me to always “bleed” the oil line. If you disconnect the oil line for draining where it stubs out, adding oil can leave trapped air in the far end of the line.

I didn’t grill him on why that may be a problem, I just do it. I’m thinking the reason may be something as small as an incorrect oil level reading to something more severe. But, then again, it may just be an old mechanic’s habit.

Just a couple of comments. I agree with the post above. Exactly three quarts puts me at exactly the mid point of the dipstick every time. Secondly, be aware that the photos in the excellent oil change link above are for an older model Sporty. The newer models have a drain tube that hangs straight down under the rear of the engine. It has a plastic plug held in place by a screw clamp. It's easy to find, but doesn't look like the one in the photos.

not to mention that the oil capacities for the 04 and newer are different than our older 'antiques'..... don't be so hung up on numbers, but rather the level of the oil
