View Full Version : Evo sportster chopper project
Gone 19th March 2006, 02:38 ya know it is said " a fool and his money are soon parted"-well start buying parts to take a perfectly good EVO sportster and tear it to pieces. Got an 05 old mans Softail Deluxe so the sporty had to go. But then I get this idea that a sporty would make a good old school chopper. after all- most of the older choppers started with sportys. 45degree rake hardtail frame with a 9 over springer front and ape hangers, coffin tank turned backwards (because i can) a real neat octogan oil tank from a guy in Ohio, 40 spoke 21 inch front and 200 rear tire. started canibalizing the sporty and most of the HD parts will go into a pile and only the necessasary items being used. Did i mention-foot clutch and suicide shift. I decided to mount the headlamp on the front fender after 2 or 3 other locations were tried. I'l try to post some pics as I get farther along. May have to retire the Softail when its done.

Quebeker 9th April 2006, 19:42 question, is the tank on backwards on purpose?
Jimbo999 9th April 2006, 20:26 question, is the tank on backwards on purpose?
I was thinking the same thing but Ya' know I kind'a like the uniqueness of
it that way.
ziggyhd1 9th April 2006, 23:23 Hey Bob!!!! Pics look good, I see ya did what I couldn't and deleted yer extras! I really hate yer laptop!!
Yes guys, as Phoenix's friend and cohort in crime.... the tank is on backwards on purpose, or porpoise!:smoke Because he can!:danceele I believe he got the idea off a Dave Mann print!
Gary 9th April 2006, 23:48 I think the tank looks good backwards. Besides it leaves room on the top frame tube to mount a cup holder !!! Or maybe some mini guages or both.

merc 9th April 2006, 23:50 man you got your hands full with that project.
hope you post pics as it progresses.
it will be fun to watch it evolve
Gone 10th April 2006, 00:59 thanks for the encouragement-yep as the Zig said-"because I can" check out the old David mann pics-youl see sa few with the tanks turned backwards, Progress: engine is now in-forward control (foot clutch) and suicide shift are in. had to make a new front top engine mount as I think the frame builder welded in the tab in the wrong spot plus the engine is slightly offset.
The octagonal oil tank i'm going to inset into the rear verticle mount to gain a little clearance from the engine and rear exhaust pipe.
next is the offset pulley and rear wheel shimming. Plus all the little tabs to mouunt pipes, regulator, etc. Definitely not a week build for me. Called learning as I go. Thanks to my best friend zig for the help when he can.
ziggyhd1 7th January 2007, 04:26 Here ya go! Pics of the evo project chopper! Bob, I'll post the pics, you can tell the tale!

Brad 14th January 2007, 01:02 I can't get over how much I like that tank setup. I mean the whole bike is cool, but that tank just puts it over the top!
Well done!
rickxx 28th January 2007, 16:18 nice job. talk about makin' it your own. you got skills man.
KSDAPIMP 28th January 2007, 19:23 bad ass i just cant get over the tank
scottgearman 28th January 2007, 19:29 I can't wait to see what he does with that SKI-DOO
rottenralph 28th January 2007, 20:14 I like it. The reverse tank is interesting. I hit a car once, I hope youy don't have the same experience becuase my blue balls would be a treat compared to what your are gonna look like.

Gone 5th February 2007, 03:14 the skidoo is getting painted blue with flames in the spring. and no I didn't sell the geezer glide.
