View Full Version : Push Rod O ring wear on 4 speed bottom end and XB12 heads

I converted my 4 speed to XB 12 heads using Adrews adjustable pushrods when overhauling the enginge.

The bike runs like a demon, but the slightly different gemoetry of the heads causes a minor contact between the head and top of the pushrod, rsulting in a polished ring;and also seems to accelerate wear on the rubber o ring, probably because there is uneven pressure on the ring.

Has anyone else encountered this? I suspect tapered pushrods would resolve the contact issue, but as far as I can see there are tapereds avialable for BTs only.

Anyone got any solutions?

NRHS has custom Hurricane tapered pushrods available for your XL. They sell for $144 a set.
But I'll be honest they probably will make it worse unless you have the really big Andrews pushrods these will actually be larger

Thanksndrews a Dan, I'll get the pushrods measured and get back to you. Th ediference would have to minimal as the wear after 4k is minimal, just a distint "polished" ring, but the Andrews rods are much thicker than the originals.

I'll be in touch when I have the diameter of the rods in the engine.

Any word of advice on the O rings? I know you do full pushrod tubes but I'd like to elimate the obvious before making that investment.

Andy ....

I have a set of Andrews chromemoly adjustable pushrods in my 04. They are very thick. Don't don't seem to be rubbing the actual pushrod tubes though, but they are very very close. I can't understand why they are made that thick.

If you are rubbing inside the pushrod tube it definately could cause uneven wear on the o-rings due to putting pressure on them from the inside.
