View Full Version : Vulgar and/or obscene Avatars and other graphics
bplinson 21st March 2006, 09:36 Seems like about once a year I have to post this again.
Please do not use any vulgar or obscene graphics in your posts, avatars, or profile photos.
Please no images showing nudity, sex, or obscene gestures (giving the finger, etc...)
I know we all have our own definition of what is obscene and what it not so before you upload your avatar, photo or whatever please think about the others on XLF that may have children that view the website at the same time.
Avatars and images that cross the line will be removed without notice or explaination.
Thanks for your understanding and cooperation.
DustyJacket 21st March 2006, 12:03 About YOUR avatar........... :)
(They are always scarey)
IronMick 21st March 2006, 20:58 I very much like the management philosophy of this site. Someone complained recently, something about free speach.
IMO free speach is not what this site is about. If someone wants free speech they should go elsewhere. This site is for real people to share about their Sportys. If you do not want your children or grandchildren to see it it should not be on this site - except perhaps in the restricted areas.
If we are to err in our management style, it should be on the side of emotionally, psychologically, and sexually healthy images and language.
There is too much bad stuff in our world - bad relationships, bad sex, bad whatever. Our site should be an example of what is good.
One last comment: there is nothing that any of us can do in life that is better than something that makes a childs life better.
Sportster Girl 21st March 2006, 21:01 Excellent post Mick! :)

Acceptable? damn! i was clicking it hoping to enlarge it.:doh
santansporty 22nd March 2006, 03:40 Personally... I can do without the 99% naked women on avatars and anywhere else other than the private section... if folks want to go there then let them join up and then join the private adult section...
Sometimes when the kids are over I want to show them photos of the other bikes and what neat things people can do to them... but I cringe when the naked biker chicks start popping up all over...
I think that if anyone doesn't get where I am coming from with this... how about if you were showing your kids or grandkids the site and I had put up some very hung and hunky men in flimsy see-through jock straps up all over.....
After all, fair is fair.... and there are plenty of crotch rocket sites full of that stuff if you can't do without... :p
kdarejr 22nd March 2006, 03:44 if you were offended sorry ! i changed it !!!
santansporty 22nd March 2006, 03:47 By the way... I am old and have been there, done that... but it is actually quite embarrassing for the kids...
Thanks...

Well said. This forum is about good family people, both adults and children, and their Sportys. All the other junko stuff should be banned to the private areas.

Give me a break, I'm on this forum every day and have yet to see naked chicks popping up all over. Maybe in the random avatar or post. The only nudity I've seen in any of these threads is the restricted sections.
vetthed 22nd March 2006, 05:09 Well said. This forum is about good family people, both adults and children, and their Sportys. All the other junko stuff should be banned to the private areas.
Junko stuff ? Who are you....richard cunnigham?
And this forum is about motorcycles!
I totally agree about the nudity and the kids not seeing it but dont you think there has been alot of banning, complaining, and apologizing around here lately?
Stop acting lika wash-woman and start talking SPORTSTERS...
Thank You.
82ndJumper 22nd March 2006, 06:20 This site is for real people to talk about Sportys. What kind of crap is that about, also if you want free speech go somewhere else. Why dont you speak up before Bert does you tailgater. This is Berts site so its his rules, fine by me but I am tired of when Bert says something you get all the people that follow along and dont speak up first. Show some backbone and speak up first. When did this become a site for kids. If cant controll your kid to keep him away from the computer then YOU have the problem. I thought this was a place to talk about Sportster and not I am so sorry I hurt your feelings WAA WAA. I didnt get mad cause of what Bert put out its those WUSSIES that chime in with there stupid comments like a little kid. GROW UP.
santansporty 22nd March 2006, 06:54 If some of us want to put in our 2cents in agreement with Bert, what is the big problem? It seems some of you are wound up pretty tight...
I have not complained, apologized, etc... I am just giving a little imput on why I am happy to have the juvenile stuff curtailed.... again....
This is a Sportster forum that is open to people who would like to be able to share with their friends and family... This site seems to take a lot of care and pride in what it puts forth to the membership and that is why a lot of us are here instead of other sites where you have to wade through tons of immature junk to find something worthwhile to read. I am thankful for this site and the standards it sets.
AND, there is the adult area where you can all go and tell your jokes and look at your pictures...
So I wonder why some of you are so quick to attack simply because the main area of the site needs a little housecleaning now and then.
Gary 22nd March 2006, 07:04 Exactly, I think that a lot of people are forgetting how bad it got about a year ago around here. Bert set the rules down and it's been pretty tame here since then. Lately we've been drifting back... that's no big deal in itself. Not too many have really crossed the line yet, but pulling in the reigns before we drift off over the edge again is good staying ahead of the eightball on Berts part.

bplinson 22nd March 2006, 08:05 Dang guys, everyone chill out. This is a Sportster website number one and it does not make you a wuss or a cry-baby just because you don't want to have 99% naked women or vulgar avatars or images in the public area.
It is about respect for your fellow bikers and respect for their families.
Our membership is a bit older and many have kids and grandkids. Like some here have said they want to be able to show the photos of the bikes without having to worry about what avatar or image might pop up in the posts below.
There are plenty of cool avatars that can be found and used that do not nude women or something else.
I am sure that there are many here that enjoy those kinds of things but there is a time and place for it.
Again I would like to thank you for your cooperation and understanding and for respecting your fellow bikers and their families.

Hey Ed, I think your avitar could be considered copyright infringement!!! Better not let the MoCo see it!!:smoke
flskevin 22nd March 2006, 16:58 Hey, Bert runs the site & he makes the rules. That's fine with me, I'll abide by the rules.
Nudity in a generic post is over the top, any thread can start with benign beginnings and meander in to the darkest of topics. It's the nature of thousands of people from all over the world reading & posting with different value systems.
With that said, not everyone shares the views that this is just a forum on sportster issues. I'd guess that 50% of the posts on this forum are not about motorcycles but personal views and experiences.
This is an online community that has established relationships, friendships, a hierarchy and cliques just like any other society. A little toleration may be in order. Some people on this forum will push the bounds of good taste and sometimes that is good, sometime it is bad. But, in my view it adds a little excitement in some of the monotony.
Ken Man Do 22nd March 2006, 17:17 Jack, the thing that gave me the willies about your kangaroos avatar was the little kid standing too close. I've seen video of those critters rompin' ass on people!
Also Bert, how do you handle bickering amongst members, as well as out and out blatant personal attacks within threads? I've got issues with this topic right now on another board I frequent, where you can witness what I call a bunch of crap that shouldn't be tolerated. Ruins the whole atmosphere.
I think a modicum of moderation is required.

Bert doesn't HAVE a lot of these issues because:
1. He has set the rules from the get-go, and holds us ALL to them
2. He has made excellent choices with regard to moderators who have proven themselves to be fair, reasonable, and effective.
3. We are ALSO a self-policing community. None of us wants the BS we've seen on other forums, and that's one of the things that holds us all together.
4. Mind-Ray......say no more... :laugh
SixMilesFromHell 22nd March 2006, 17:44 I often work in High School classrooms and I like the fact that I can show kids some of the cool bikes without too much worry about inappropriate pictures.
Also, even though some of the avatars are creative and interesting, I come to this site mostly to see and discuss motorcycles. Use what you want but I would like to see more members put thier bikes in their avatar.
Sportster Girl 22nd March 2006, 18:04 Mind Ray! Mind Ray!

Believe me it is not easy. I let a lot of things go because it is just not worth the effort and since we are all adults we should be able to work it out amonst each other. Only time I really get involved is if I see something that is definatly over the line, or the moderators bring it up, or the members bring it up.
On the board you are talking about, the admin and moderators need set a standard and stay with it like with anything else in life. Lots of forums go down the tube because the admin or mods are afraid that if they do something that members will leave the forum. Well, they probably will, but the only people that will leave are those that find out they can not do whatever the hell they want to. I also hate to lose members here but I am not gonna sacrifice the whole forum for a few that want to be asses.
We have it pretty good here because we have a mature membership. Most Sporty and Buell riders are over 30 so they are not as prone to start bickering and throwing out insults or name calling. Many forums, especially car forums have a lot of young people that have really no clue about life and just love to stir the pot. Take a look at srt4forums.com sometime. It is a HUGE forum with tens of thousands of members but most are youngsters braggin' about who they beat streetracing and then someone else calling bullshit on them. Most of us here have the fortitude to walk away from an asinine Internet fight.
The problem is that no matter what policies or rules you lay down, when you have over 6000 members and over 50% of them are active on the forum you are gonna have those that do not like the policy or rules and those that will ignore them.
For example if I make a policy saying that all no one can discuss guns. I will get 1500 people that say GREAT JOB BERT and I will get 1500 people say DANG BERT WHY ARE YOU SO HEAVYHANDED or complaining about freedom of speech. And then there are those that are gonna complain no matter what decision you make. There will probably be people here that complain about what I am writing right now.
So like I have said before I will try to make reasonable decisions about what should and what should not be posted and hopefully the members will respect that.
If not, I hate to lose a member but what can I do? I can not make everyone happy.
My thing is just trying to keep order with the help of the moderators. I think we are doing a pretty good job.
So back to your question, on the board you said this problem is getting out of control, someone needs to take charge of the situation and control it. Otherwise you get a bunch of GREAT people pissed off and they no longer like to visit your site. And then you are just left with a bunch of asses that bicker all the time.
Me? All I want is the XL Forum to be a place where Sportster and Buell Enthusiasts can come and relax, learn a little and have a little fun when they do not have any other responsibilities like work or family to take care of.

Ken Man Do 22nd March 2006, 18:24 Edit: I just edited an insanely boring post!
Anyhow, agreed, on these boards some moderation is an absolute necessity lest the ass element will run amok.
