View Full Version : 77 ignition problems

I'm having a few electrical gremlins with my 77 ironhead.

When I turn the key from "off" to "ignition", the light comes on, but it's dim. About 5 seconds later, what I'm pretty sure is the ignition circuit breaker (located just under the seat and next to the battery) will click and the light will get brighter. About 30 seconds later, another click and it'll go dim. This is a continuous cycle.

I wouldn't mind the light, that I can deal with, but I also don't get any spark at the plugs. I took out the ignition coil, and that didn't change anything. My ohmeter is crap, so I can't check the resistance.

I don't know if this makes a difference, but all rear lighting has been removed (brake and turn signals).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The wire between your breaker and coil is shorted to ground I'll bet. Get another multimeter. Even a cheapo from radio shack is better than nothing.
It's not good for that breaker to continually cycle, before long the contacts will burn and it won't reset at all. Got a manual fer the bike? Alot easier to track wiring problems with the schematic.

Gotcha. I keep my bike at a local storage facility, so I'll hop over there tomorrow while their open and check that out. Thanks for your help.

When i had a breaker recycling like that it was the -ve battery cable that was loose.
