View Full Version : alarm system
mikenico 26th March 2006, 08:24 As the 04 sportsters have this flashing turn signals if you move the bike,.I want to put my own siren into the exsisting system,I know the dealer supplys it own siren, but I want to fit my own one.How and were do I put the + and - wires from my siren to the electric wiring on the my sportster.
thanks

hero 26th March 2006, 12:36 Hi Mike, I might be wrong, but don't think it's that easy. The HD 'smart siren' as they call it, has its own circuitry built in & is more than just a siren. There IS a multi-pin connector for it near the fusebox behind the battery (it will have a blank-off installed), so you could see if you get any alarm output there I suppose. Not sure if that works on 12 volt though, as the 'smart siren' also has it's own power supply built-in, but worth a look in anyway. Let us know if it works..
huffynh 26th March 2006, 13:27 I got this off from another forum a year ago, never tried it. Let me know if it works.

"This info I got from somewhere - I don't remember, but it works.
Siren from Radio Shack - Part# 273-079 $5.29
Wiring - siren-red to harness-brown, and the siren-black to harness-green. You don't use the black harness wire.
To make the connection from the siren to the alarm module a little more secure, you can drill/poke two small holes in the dust cap that covers the alarm module connector and feed the wires from the alarm through them. Then go to your local dealer and get two terminals (P/N 72033-93). Slip some heat shrink over the alarm wires, crimp/solder the alarm wires to the terminals, shrink the tubing, and plug the terminals from the alarm into the module and replace the dust cap. "
Sportster Girl 26th March 2006, 14:03 Can't help with the wiring, but I have the security module. It's only 99 bucks....sounds alarm, disables bike from running.
csaintg 26th March 2006, 15:17 And you can get it cheaper from Zanottimotors.com It is really worth it. I want to get the vibrating fob next. The nice thing about the smart siren is someone can't just cut the battery, and kill the siren.
semjpm 26th March 2006, 16:30 I installed the new Siren-II and played around with adding a second transducer. It made the system intermittent on arming (chirps) and that was enough to convince me that my TSSM was in danger. The problem really is potted circuits - making tracing impossible - and lack of service data. The harness that came with the old 2 piece siren and pager does have some circuity in the Y cable that they supply. For what it's worth, there are 3 wires - Ground, 12V and trigger. The 12V is for power and to charge the siren's battery. The trigger line goes momentary low on alarm and provides ground (-). The actual ground is only used for battery charging. The Radio shack device (12V piezo transducer) is wired Red to 12V and black to the trigger wire. The bike's alarm circuit does not appear to be capable of supplying a high current draw and like I said, I was concerned that I would fry the TSSM. I may try again to add a second siren with opto isolation and its own 12V power supply.
BTW: The siren II works great and the pager has about a 600M range.

wowee1 26th March 2006, 16:36 Spend the 80 bucks or so for a Smart Siren II from someone like Zanottis. Plug & play install, and comes with all the hardware you need. Then you can add a pager later if you want to... Just my 2 cents.;)
mikenico 26th March 2006, 17:21 Thanks for the advice guys and girls, but I just may leave it well alone, don,t fancy frizzling my wiring.
But I have one question, when the turn lights start flashing when bike is moved,is it the live(+) thats makes the conection or the earth(-) would I be wrong in thinking that if I conect the siren to either the + or - to a turn sign wire will it work?
Mike Nico UK:smoke
hero 26th March 2006, 19:11 :laugh It will yes, but your siren will sound every time you turn the corner! (Which is probably not a bad thing in London... )
semjpm 26th March 2006, 19:45 Your could do that but really the turn signals are being powered by the TSSM and alarm functions are more about the 4-way flasher than L or R turn signals. The other thing that you could do to supplement the Siren-II is to install a tilt switch on the Radio Shack noise maker. Sort of a redundant backup. I would wire it to a 12 Volt relay that opens when the ignition goes live. If you have an old house heating thermostat around, the mercury switch would be free. The encapsulated relays are around $5.
