I'm getting ready to service my '01 1200C. The shop manual specifies Sport-Trans fluid #98854-96. The dealer only had Sport-Trans fluid #99896-88. I checked the new parts & accessories catalog and it lists a totally different fluid. What's going on with these numbers? The Sport-Trans fluid #98854-96 that I bought from the dealer does state that it's good for "71 on XL models but the fact that its number is different from the number shown in the shop manual causes me worry.

Did you ask the Dealer what was up? I'm sure it's probably just a matter of a change in part #. When I went to buy some, there was only one type of Sport Trans fluid for Sportsters on the shelf. Don't think you have anything to worry about.

I've just checked with a HD dealers website. One part number is for a case of 12 quart bottles and the other is for a single quart bottle.

That Sport-Trans fluid has been replaced by something called Formula+. Many H-D stealers don't even have Sport-Trans fluid anymore. I am now using the Formula+ myself. Seems to be just like the old stuff.

I have been using Bel-Ray Gear Saver 85W. Nice thing is that is red in color, so when you have a drop under the bike, you can tell it is trans or engine oil based on the color.
