Dan Norlin's 2006 rev A motor

We're working on rev B. It'll be even better.

82ci, one carb, stock port heights (raised ports not allowed in his class) on gasoline, no nitrous or anything like that.

Kerry, your heads are better than these ;) Won't be much longer. Good things take time.

Thanks guys, glad you like it. It's been a lot of work for sure. Wish I could talk more about it, but I'd rather his competitors figure it out for themselves. We think we can get more though. Well, I know we can get more, but I mean within the constraints of his rules, which are pretty restrictive. We're doing a new set of heads with some new ideas. I fully expect to take it north of 145hp, at least that's what the calculations say, but we'll see.

The main thing about the motor now is the broader powerband. It works good from 5000 to 7500, which is pretty wide for a race bike. It's always been peaky and difficult to ride, I'm hoping this helps him out a little.

This is a race motor obviously, but it's set up for AHDRA's "Hot Street" class, which dictates all kinds of things: the gasoline used (VP 100 octane), port heights (checked with a jig), single plugs only, one carb at stock mounting height, no dual stage limiters or air shifters or wheelie bars or anything like that.

They have an 8lb per ci rule, and Dan is maybe 150lbs, and a Buell S1 weighs in the 430 range, so he has to ballast the bike up quite a bit. Total it has to weigh 656 lbs bike & rider with this size motor.

He's run lots of low tens, 10.2's and a few 10.1's, even with the extra weight. Speeds as high as 133's. He can go quicker, just a matter of sorting a few things out, chassis and technique. He'd easily be 9's without the ballast.

The bike is street legal, licensed and insured.

When Thunder Mountain HD did their grand opening here in CO back in '04, Dan rode it up there on the interstate. I took my Buell 1250 M2 shop mule. We had tuned both of them up at the shop just before we left. Dan won, turning a 136hp or so, I was second with 123 or so. Third and fourth were also bikes we did at NRHS, a Twin Cam that turned 120hp and a Buell S1 that turned 111. So it was a clean sweep ;)

Here's my sheet from that day:

Dan takes his bike all over the country doing the AHDRA races (in the back of his pickup). He'll be in Phoenix here in a week and a half.

Why doesn't he put an extended swong arm on that thing?

aswracing
29th March 2006, 15:46
I'm going to assume that was a joke ;)

He's had 3 different length swingarms on it over the last couple years. The one in that pic is the longest one he used, and it was right at the limit of the rules. He's using a shorter one at the moment. There's a real trade-off there, getting it just right is a bit tricky.

I think he said the ballast was sort of good because you can place the weight up front...was that right?

what are his 60 foots like?

NRHS Sales
31st March 2006, 23:04
What's really funny is this year the same dealer Aaron was talking about had another dyno shootout. But they made a rule that all bikes competeing had to have their engines built at their shop. Guess they didn't want NRHS coming in and sweeping all the top spots again!!! ;)

One of their mechanics just had us do his T-storm heads as well!!!

Dan qualified #1 in St. Louis today:

http://www2.ahdra.com/ahdrauser/qualifying/Hot%20Street.htm

Wish him luck for tomorrow.

He lost in the final round at Dallas a few weeks ago ... after running the two quickest times of anyone in the class that weekend. He still has the points lead. But not by much, he needs a win tomorrow to make a little gap over Mike Roberts.

killer rt , bad et...maybe he wheelie'd out? Out in the quarter finals. Did top qualifying get him any points or just cash?

I haven't talked to him since the race ... but on Saturday night he told me he was having clutch problems. I suspect that had something to do with it. Yeah, he got points for qualifying #1. I'm not sure, he may still have the points lead.
