View Full Version : New TC88 Install Questions

To anyone who has installed one of these (Ron) -

How did you make the connections? I bought mine used from a member here so all the wires were cut. I called Daytona and they said that's how they come from the factory anyway, and sent me an installation kit. The kit has a long, fabric-wrapped cord with a brown and a bluish wire in it with a 2 pin connector at one end and bare wires at the other end. There are a bunch of different connectors (looks like for in-line splicing) and a few different types of plugs.

I was told by Daytona that they do it that way so that you can get the wiring harness throught the small hole in the cam case, then you put your plugs on. After looking at the wiring diagram in the instructions, I have some questions

Qusstion #1. Do I attempt to run the lines all the way to the coil? On my 2000C, the harness comes out of the cam case and terminates into a plug connector under the bike - about directly below the front cylinder. Do I put the wires into that plug, or re-wire all the way?

Question #2. If I use the plug underneath, how do I do the single fire thing? I don't think there's a point in the plug for the second coil wire.

Question #3. I don't have a tach installed yet, but I have one to put on. I'm wondering which connector to put onto the brown (tach) wire? I want to be able to hook it to a PC to download the latest and greatest MAPP from Ron.

Any pics on any of this stuff would be greatly appreciated.

I wish I could give you info, but since I have never installed the type of TC88 you have, I am going to be of no help at all.

There are others on this board that have installed the type you are installing on your 2000 year bike, so I'm sure you will get some help.

Ron -

Do you have a pic of the connector at the end of your brown wire...the one you use to connect to your PC cable?

That would be a start. Also, even though yours is different, did you plug into the existing wiring harness somewhere, or did you run new wires all the way to the coil?

I stole these pics from a post that "jimmyheadgear" made.

As you can see, on the 03-06 bikes, installing the TC88A involve removing and replacing the stock ignition module located under the seat with the TC88A module. Then a "jumper wire" which is supplied with the kit is then installed between the TC88A module and the bike's diagnostic connector located next to the battery.

The jumper wire has a pin on each end. The 'male' pin end goes into the bikes diagnostic connector, and the 'female' pin end goes into the connector on the newly installed TC88A ignition module.

The pics below show how this "jumper wire" is routed:

The PC cable is connected to this diagnostic connector once that little cap on top of the diagnostic connector that you can see in the pic below is removed. The cap is really just a dust cap.

To get that new "jumper wire" into the Deutsch connector on the ignition module, you have to remove the end of the connector and pull out the plastic part that looks like a wedge once it's been removed. Then the little clip inside can be pushed with a small pick or jewelers screwdriver so the stock wire can be removed and the new jumper wire can be inserted.

The pic below is not the connector on the ignition module, but it's the same type of Deutsch connector (just for illustration)

Again, this is for the 03-06 bikes.

Bummer...None of this stuff looks close.

Got a pic of the bike end of the PC cable?

Hey ... I told you that the 03-06 are different from what you have.

I don't own the cable. Just borrow one when I need it. A photo of these cables are all on the Twin Tec website.

Can't the guy that sold you the ignition help you with your questions (He must have had it on his bike before)?

Also, the complete instructions on these various ignitions can be downloaded right off the Twin Tec website. Have you looked there?

I have the instrictions...all it has is a wiring diagram. No mention of HOW to wire it, just what connects to what. As for the cable, I'm looking to get a couple of shots of the end so I can see what the connector looks like. All the DTT stuff has multiple objects in the pics and doesn't say which is which.

I bought the thing from Narley here and it was on his race bike so I think he wired it straight through. The wires are way too long to have been in any plug.

Problem solved...at least for now.

Called DTT and guess what??? I've got the wrong one!

I have the 1005 and I need the 1005S. Modules are the same, but connectors are different. The 1005S should be plug-and-play, just like yours.

Stay tuned.

I'm trying to connect the PC connector cable from my laptop which is running the Daytona Twin Tech software) to my TwinTech module on the bike and can't seem to find where the white jumper cable (wire) connects to the connector on the Twin Tech module under the seat. All the holes are filled with other wires already. I see where the other end of the white jumper wire connects to the diagnostic connector but not the other end.

Any help?

You need to remove wire #2 and replace it with the white jumper. Read through Turbota's sticky TC88A thread (http://xlforum.net/vbportal/forums/showthread.php?t=18702) and you'll find a lot of info on it. Some relevant posts are towards the end but you should read the whole thing.

Just finished connecting my TC-88a to my laptop and made the necessary adjustments to recalibrate the speedometer for my 2006 1200c.

You'll run into problems connecting the male end of the white jumper cable into the empty #1 terminal of the bikes diagnostic connector. It's kind of difficult to push the male end far enough in to "click" so that the male end protrudes enough to make contact with the connector that goes to your laptop. Here's a tip, push the male end in as far as it can go then turn over the connector and look down inside and you'll see (3) male ends extending in all the way and then the 4th male end (which is the male end to the white jumper cable) but you'll see that it isn't quite all the way in, simply use a needlenose plyers and reach in and grab the male end and pull it gently until you feel it click or seat.

Then you're good to go and connect the diagnostic end of the computer cable (USB) and run the program. If these connectors are not seated properly the program won't run correctly and you'll get error messages.

Stupid question,

Does the white jumper cable (wire) stay installed or you unhook it and reinstall the brown #2 wire?

The jumper wire stays

Actually if you look at that connector you'll see a small green colored insert. That insert is the locking mechanism for the pins. What you need to do is make or get a small hook that will fit into the rectangular opening of the green insert. Work the hook around in the opening until it graps tightly and pull straight up. This will now allow you to inert the new pin without all the trouble you describe above. You have to reinsert the green insert after you install the new pin, then you're good to go.
