View Full Version : From XL to XR.....sorta

Back in early January I dragged from the sellers barn a late 84 XLX that had been disassembled and neglected for several years. Basically it was just a corroded and rusted hulk and many who saw it then thought it was hopeless. It consisted of several boxes of parts, but most of it was there except for the bolts. To make a long story short I set to work and after two months of hard work (and quite a bit a cash) I now have what you see in the pictures. As I was cobbling it back together, my boss, who was closely watching the progress, decided he couldn’t stand the look of the engine with all the rust and corrosion so he talked me into letting him paint it. So the detail and color scheme of the engine is his………kind of different I guess, but it grows on you.

I know it doesn’t have the traditional Harley look but each of us has our own idea of cool. I like it and I guess that’s all that matters in the end. It’s not quite finished….needs a few more weekends for the finishing touches before being ready to ride. Thought I’d share a picture.

Looks good to me! Need to black out the wheels to carry that Black & Orange color scheme off.

Hell, if you restored it, the rest of the world can kiss you a** if they don't like it!

MRK585,

With exception of the tank and seat it's all from an '84 XL.

Looks very cool! I think a ribbed seat would look even cooler....give it that old-school look (like a seat on a Royal Enfield)
Great job!!!

That looks sweet, I like it. You've done a great job and the engine colour scheme suits it nicely.

I think your boss did a great job with the engine. I really like the silver heads, on an otherwise blacked-out engine.

Just wanted to jump back in here to say thanks for all the positive feedback. My boss will be proud. He was actually a little down today because he'd run out of things to paint!

The bike looks awsome!

I know what you mean about the engine though - I think all you'd need to do to add some interest there is to pant the cam cover, sprocket cover and outerprimary the same grey as the rockers.

Looks sharp though - I love the tanks and seat combo.

Looks very cool!!!! I am a big XR-750 fan too. You could get a set of XLR pipes and make it look even more like the old iron XR. Your bike is just way too cool, makes me wish I would have done that to mine!!!!
