You would probably be better off doing it yourself. I don't think that that is an awful price, but you could cut out all of the labor that they are charging and if you look around, you might even be able to find the parts cheaper.

Jaws, if this girl can do the Stage I, then you can. I did mine with Khromewerks mufflers, SE air cleaner, and a Dynojet kit.
Cost me $344. Would have been $75 less if I hadn't
used the dynojet kit which is not necessary as there are
less expensive alternatives available.

Jaws,
It's really hard to guage, what is a fair price for parts and professional install stage 1. You could be receiving quotes from across the country, and the only relevant costs are similar charges in the New Jersey area or Eastern U.S.
I live in the Midwest, and a SE II's stage 1, at the dealer costs around $300.

It's more than you'd pay if you bought the parts online and did it yourself. It's all about how much it's worth to you to have someone else do it. If you're even slightly mechanically inclined you can do it easily and many here can help you if you have questions. That way you get the satisfaction of doing it yourself and taking a big step toward being one with your ride.

Jaws..Don't be intimidated..When I did the taxes I to was nervous about the carb. My buddy said to me, "Jim, you've pulled apart 1 bbl's and 2 bb's from cars and cleaned'm, right?" I said yeah. "Then you can do this."
So I just jumped right in. With a Svc Manual and the instructions in the Dynojet Kit it was a piece of cake.
The Muff's and A/C are straight forward bolt ons. Good Luck..We're here for you.

Cheap Stage I is less than $250 if you do it yourself. All you need is slip on mufflers, an air cleaner, and $15 worth of jets. At Sportster.org there is a great write up of Stage I instructions that anyone could follow.

Crim's right, I used the Sportster.org instructions and had no problems. You should pay attention to the warning about the soft brass screws that attach the float bowl though. They get boogered-up easily and you should replace them as suggested.

I wouldn't call Xena a "girl" if I were you. She's proven, as have Maggie, MissyD, aussiegirl, cypher and numerous other female members, that she can stand toe to toe with the best on this forum. She's a biker, no more, no less, than any of us. :)

I meant no disrespect...I think calling a girl a girl never means that....Girl is not a derogative term to me.

I paid my dealer $478.00 for Screaming Eagle Stage 1 (10% parts discount).

The way I would go is this...The money saved on labor would go towards better slip-on's (S&S), a better A/C (NHRS Hurricane), and the $15 in jets.
Now there's some "BANG FOR THE BUICK".

S&S Slipons= $250
Hurricane A/C= $140
Mount brkt
& breather= $60
Jets= $15 = $465.

There...Ya saved $100 and got better goodie's
