View Full Version : Clutch advice needed.

My clutch is unusually difficult to squeeze. I know Sportsters are reportedly known to have a tougher clutch, but mine just seems worst than most. I had the mechanic check it out, and he adjusted it and said it's as good as it gets; which is still pretty difficult for me to pull (weak hands). Anyway, he suggested maybe getting one of those "easy clutch" assemblies to make it easier to pull. I found one item that you insert in with your clutch assembly, and it actually works as a type of leverage device and makes your clutch "40% easier to manage." Have any of you heard of these? Had any personal experience with them? Do you have any other suggestions (short of my boyfriend's suggestion that I walk around with one of those spring squeeze things that you're supposed to squeeze to build up your forearm muscles)? Any advice you can give me to make my rides more pleasant would be greatly appreciated!
Cya later!

I don't know the year of your ride but I do know that a major problem isn't necessarily in the pull as much as the distance from the lever to the handgrip. ie: The farther away it is, the longer the stretch. If you're pulling from the finger tips it's gonna hurt. There are some solutions if this is your dilemma

I too had a nearly unbearable time with the clutch on my sporty - to the point where I didn't even want to ride the bike until I found a fix. I swapped out the stock risers for 4" pullback risers and also changed the angle of the bars, then changed the angle of the levers to better suit me. Happy to report that I haven't had any trouble since.

That's exactly what the problem is. I'm having to grab with my fingertips, and when I try to "ease" out, it tries to slip away from me. When I had it in the shop, the mech adjusted it a little bit, and it worked pretty well last night. Now I think it may be a matter of getting used to it. Thanks Will!

Thank you Xena. I just ordered the handlebars for the new 883L to change out the drag bars that are on there now. I already have the 4" risers on there, so I will definitely make sure that when we put it all together, we will make sure to adjust it with the clutch in mind. Thanks for the tip; it should help a lot.
Have a great day!!!

Don't rule out the 4 1/2" pull back risers. I put them on mine and the difference is incredible. Also MoCo makes a set of levers that lessen the distance to the grip. Don't know the part # but they look like the '05 levers. They also have a reduced diameter grip which brings it even closer. PM me if you have any problems getting them.
