View Full Version : Cost and Labor

Just to see what they would have to say, I called a local stealer and asked what it would take to turn a stock 883L into a SEII Pro street-eating machine. Told them I already have the pipes, but that was it--how much to have them finish the job.

He said the "High Performance Air Cleaner" was $150, and labor for the pipes would be about three hours, plus carb work. Total cost about $400. Seemed waayyyy high given that I already have the pipes of course. But I'm also wondering what A/C they used, as I want to get the Hurricane and that's more expensive isn't it?

If I were to do it myself, how long would it take to do the pipes--you know, without the smoke breaks and lunch break the stealer takes?

I'm honest here--I'm scared to try it myself.

Get the Hurricane, you'll be glad you did. They put on the screamin eagle air cleaner for the stage 1 that is 150 bucks. I had them do this to mine, the pos had holes in it in about 500 miles. I think they have a replacement now but you will like the hurricane much better. Pipes 1 1/2 to 2 hours, maybe less, for a full set off pipes. Do it yourself, you will know its done right and save a few bucks.

I just need the Centered 2" Hurricane plus bracket, right? Then it just goes on without having to change the position of anything?

And with the support bracket, do I just need the bracket or is there good cause to get the "Complete Installation Kit"?

Yes, doesn't change the position of anything with the 2 inch. You'll need the bracket and the breather kit which vents the gases into the atmoshpere verses back into the carb. I think you can buy the bracket and breather all in a kit.

yah........ Sounds waaayyy High to me. 3 hrs labor for pipe install, *PLUS* carb work?!?!?!? I figured an hour for the pipes... and that would be me fumbling around for tools drinking a beer and takin a smoke break:smoke

MP, here's my suggestion, take it for what it's worth...

Buy the Hurricane (if that's the one you want) directly from NRHS. Complete kit with breather re-route, etc. will run ya about $250. But it will last the life of the bike. As opposed to $150 for crap with the SEII.

Put the mufflers on yourself. Pretty simple job. Putting them on without the A/C or jet upgrades won't hurt a thing.

Then take your Hurricane kit to the dealer or better yet, a QUALITY Indy, and have them install it and jet the bike. One advantage the dealer has over you other than experience, is usually a dyno. They can dial it right in. And they won't care that it isn't an HD part. They won't back the part of course but they'll be happy to install it and tune.

Yes you can most certainly do it all yourself. Yes it is cool to do it yourself. Yes I advocate doing things yourself. And yes, people will disagree with me. I'm just basing this off what I think will work for YOU. And sometimes having a pro do the work isn't a bad thing. Learn as you go and tackle bigger and bigger jobs as you go along.

Just my .02.

Hey MP, I gotta second Gotwas advice. The aircleaner from NHRS is better than the new style SE ones, you'll be better off in the long run with it. It's not hard to change, but will take you a couple hours if it's the first time you've had the aircleaner off. The pipes are way easy to change yourself. Gotwa had a point about the dyno. Did the price the dealer quoted you include dyno tune or just slap them together price?

I did my pipes and ac myself, but had the stealer do the rejet. Read "Jetting 101" and save yourself some money. Believe me, I ain't all that good at wrenching, but if I can at least do the pipes and ac you can too. After reading that thread and looking through the factory service manual, I wished I had done the rejet too.

Danny is right. Get the service manual and check it out.
You can do this. There are tons of people in here, including
many of the women (Yes the women) who have done their
own Stage 1.
It primarily takes the ability to be able to follow instructions.
The carb tuning can be a pita, but again, if you are able
to follow written instructions such as Stevo's jetting 101, then you
are more than halfway there.

I did buy the Hurricane and the full install kit; total was $282.90. I'm quite confident I'll be happier with that than the SE AC, which I believe all the members here who say it's a POS!

So putting the pipes on is easy--glad to hear it. The AC and rejet is a bit tougher... so that brings up this question; if I try it myself and can't seem to do it, is it something that whatever I do can be undone and fixed by someone more intelligent?

YOU CAN DOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWIT!!!!!!!!

If you are at all handy with tools and can read instructions, do it yourself.

These are all very minor changes. If you go slow and don't depend on your Sportster as your sole means of transportation, you can stop whenever you want and if you need help just post a message here. If all else fails, you can always take it to the dealer. You don't have to do it all in the same day.

While your dealer MAY have a dyno, the normal jetting mods (Jetting 101) will get you within 10% of perfect. The dealer won't try a bunch of different combos of jets, idle screw settings, etc. unless you pay extra for it and then if anything changes (weather, humidity, air filter cleanliness) you will be off 10% anyway. Better to make the changes, run it for a week or two and then take it for a dyno run.

Good luck, read the manual, and get your hands dirty.

I was in the same boat as you and scared sh$%^$'less to do it myself. But, I just followed the instructions very s l o w l y and took my time. Its all in the prep :) Get the RIGHT tools, have plenty of space, have towels/rags laying around , get the manual, print the info out, think before you take anything off, label the parts on the floor , diagram how they are going to go back in. I did purchase a "special" tool to change the jets, pretty much a very small screwdriver with a BIG ass handle :)

Within hours, I was able to change my mufflers, added the AC and change the jets :) This is my first bike ever. But, with all the info I found on this site its amazing what you can do and the feeling you get after you've done it, its well worth the sweat and tears :)
