I am convinced that Cycle Shack slip-on tapers are the mufflers for me. I arrived at this conclusion after reading many entrys on the XL forum. My bike is a 2006 XL 1200 Custom. I have been told by several people that you do not have to rejet the carb to use these mufflers. My Sportster has the original stock air filter and stock jetting. I do not care for more performance, just a better sound that is not too loud. I prefer better air filtering to passing more air. My Sporty already runs like a rocket ship and gets 50 MPG. I don't want to loose that or create vibrations as my bike is relatively vibration free. I value all of your opinions and expert advice, so please give me some help that fits my preferences. Especially, is rejetting going to be necessary? At present, my spark plugs are a mid tone tan color when checked after pulling into my shop with a little ideling. I realize that this is not the most accurate testing method, especially when checked this way.

I appreciate everyones help, Dan

I dont think its nessacerry. I put Cycle Shack slip-ons on and rode the bike like that for 3000 miles before I did the rest of the stage1. Like you, I was more concerned about sounding "cool".

Same here - CS muffs went on first w/o a re-jet. I did re-jet when I put on the S&S air cleaner, though...

Thanks fellow bikers for all the great advice. I did order the Cycle Shack tapers from Sorgy last night. I chose the CS TP slip-ons because of someone on the Forum mentioning that they were deeper or mellower in tone. Sorgy had already told me that they were a little quieter than the slash cuts.

What a wonderful place to come for help (XL Forum) and wonderful people willing to share their experiences. When I bought a Harley, I bought into a brotherhood unlike anything thing I have experienced with other bikes and this Sporty is my 45 bike. Well, mabe a little bit like this with my antique '62 Cushman Eagle. Cushman has a following too.

I have another question about installation of these CS mufflers....How will I get them on the header pipes as well as the crossover pipes. Looks like you would have to move the muffler in two directions at the same time. I have not figured that out unless you must loosen or remove the headers from the head. Will I need new gaskets? Help again...how do you fit all that together at the same time? Your help will help me be prepared for the installation when the mufflers arrive.

I will be glad when my taxes are paid...or can I claim that level with only changing the mufflers?

Thanks again...Dan

Got mine from Sorgy too - good guy. I didn't use new gaskets - just loosened the bolts at the head to be able to move the whole assembly off the crossover pipe and then work the muffs off the pipe. My rear muffler was a little tough to "slip" off - I ended up using Pam cooking spray (was out of WD-40 at the time!) to soak in for a couple of minutes then it was able to be wiggled off. And if you're careful, you can re-use the mesh gaskets (2 of 'em, 1 each between the muff and the x-over pipe). I went ahead and bought new ones from the stealer since they're pretty cheap. Overall, install is a snap and the directions that some with the muffs are decent. Beware the BIG smile on your face when you fire it up for the first time!

Your taxes will be partly paid anyway!

Before I forget - it's also a good idea to wipe things down, clean things up real good when you're done so you don't burn any prints into the chrome and such...

You SHOULD re-jet, but thats rule-of-thumb. Your situation may not require it. If you are running real lean after new pipes and intake, then rejetting is a must. If for some reason your bike is not running lean and turning the pilot jet up fixes it across the board, then your good to go.
I followed the Sorgy upgrade formula:
1) Take one 883
2) Add S/S Cycle Shacks
3) Add K&N with stock air box
4) Add two Accel plugs
5) Add the Sorgy re-jet kit (NINE BUCKS!!)
6) Add a dash of pilot idle tweeking
run bike and monitor plugs to see if you are lean/rich. Goto Jetting 101 for more instructions. If you run into trouble, grab your wallet and your last bit of money and let the dealer screw it up more for you.

I found that 1-1/2 turn out and the Sorgy upgrade for my bike worked the first time. And it kicked my bike in the ass...

i too got mine from sorgys an i eventually had to replace the 2 gaskets on the crossover so i would get new ones and save yourself some time in having to replace later.and windex is real good to clean up prior to startup.so now after you get them on and start her up and sit back and smile, and say man that sounds cool.enjoy and post some pics.

I didn't have to rejet mine with just slip ons. In fact it seems to be a tad better and very likely was a tad rich before that. I am prepared to rejet when I get to the airbox stage which is coming up soon. But since I am not going too agressive there, just a K&N, I doubt I will have to do much if anything besides a tweek of the air mixture screw. However I have obtained a 45 Pilot and, just in case, a 175 and a 180 Main jet. Just so I can move forward as I go and have everything on hand. I doubt I am going to need anything but the 45 Pilot, with just a K&N and some airbox mod work but better to have them on hand just in case. Eventualy they are going to probably get a work out.

But I seriously doubt your going to need to do anything with just the slip ons. Unless, on the outside chance you were lean already. But even then, just the slip ons change probably can be tweeked out with a half turn out of the mixture screw. .

If your jetting was good before the pipes Only it should be good after. I did a rejet before my Air Cleaner mod because of Carb Farts.
