View Full Version : Time for some color...

Well I love the flat black, but I'm thinking it's time for a little color for a while. I've been thinking about it for a while, but I don't really know how to paint. I came home with $140 worth of paint the other day, so I guess I need to try it out some time. I really like that cream and green Texaco bobber that was posted here a while ago so I got some cream colored paint but got some maroon for the other color.

I did my semi annual washing today, and as soon as the bike was clean I got my daughters sidewalk chalk out and started drawing on the side of the tins to get some ideas....

Design 1:

Design 2:

http://xlforum.net/photopost/data/663/medium/scallop_2b.jpg
http://xlforum.net/photopost/data/663/medium/scallop_rear.jpg

Design 3:
http://xlforum.net/photopost/data/663/medium/883_tongue.jpg

I think I'm leaning toward a mix of design 2 & 3 :D

The cream would be where the black is and the maroon where the chalk is.

I would love to hear comments.... please.

Hello,
Have ya got any ideas for your front fender? Also you may want to choose a color to outline your design in.It will leave a cleaner edge and a complimentary color will make both colors pop.I have hot pink flames that are pinstriped in a bright blue to stand out on the black and make the pink appear brighter.See,http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f227/bsporty/DSCN0248.jpg

I like blue, yellow and orange/red flames on black. Kind of a transition of colors in the flames.

Honda had cream on green on their Shadow 750's that looked good, kind of retro and pretty cool. I've got the cream on red 1200R, looks pretty cool to me.

I dont think Gary is the hot pink flames kind of guy LOL. I would like to take a number 2 on your tank. Errrrr I mean I like the design on number 2. # 3 is a good idea too.

I think it would look great. you should think about what color you would use to pinstripe around the maroon.

we had a guy taking #2's in people's rooms in college, during parties. We called him "The Mad Shitter!" LMAO!!!

A guy finally caught this jerkwad and wanted to kill him.

And now back to our thread... What about Buddy Guy Polka Dots on black? :banagui

I'm not really a flame kinda person. I agree that I should stripe between the two colors, but I'm not even sure that I can paint them yet.

I know I need a seat. I'm surprised no one noticed my mufflers are missing too. They got a fresh coat of paint today after sanding the rust that built up over the winter.

The polka dots on black brings back memories of the early 80's when I was playing bass for a bar glam metal band. I had black spandex paints with white polka dots. I posted a picture here once but Bonru said I looked like a fag. Hey maybe the pink flames would work :(

Yea I know... look like a fag... but it was the 80's and actually did pretty good with the girls with three foot high hair after those gigs.

I think the scallops in design 2 are the better option. Your intended colour scheme sounds good. I remeber the green and cream shadow 750's they looked really nice. I'm sure I saw a Covington Speedster bobber with a retro looking green paint job recently.

DESIGN #2 all the way...you have some seriously cool things going on in the cam cover to chain cover area...is that standard Buell stuff? I am outta the loop on them but brake master hanging in space is outragious too...fork boots, etc.

I got the cream on the tank this morning. The red is a little more wedgy (thick on the top) than I originally wanted, but after cussing at the tape and the mosquitos last night thats good enough!

Looks great.

Classic lines & color combo.

Can you wet sand the wedgy out? Clear coat to follow?

Aaaaaaaaaah 1984... would love to go there again if I was guaranteed to survive my stupidy (again)

I got the tank done and mounted. No new leaks... well after I tightened the petcock all the way at least :o

You can't really tell from these pics, but I also modified the front mount so that it's about 2" higher. The quick bob mount had the tank so low that you could barely see the rocker boxes. Now it's back to some open air space in the front again :D

I'll tackle the fender the next time the weather man says we're going to have rain for a week again... which sounds like it might be Wednesday :( :D

I'm real happy with the way it came out for the first time using real paint. Not all of the scallops are even and there are a few tiny little yucks in the clear (you can see one in the 2nd to last pic here), but overall I'm surprised how well it worked out and how easy it was. Thanks for all the tips from our buddy Mr Jimi !!!!!

If you put too much cutting or polishing goop on the pad you can cover everything in the barn within a ten foot radius real fast... especially your stomach :D

Looking good now but when you do the fender or fenders i think it will bring out the paint even more so. Maybe even the sidecovers too. What kind of tube did you use for your sight glass? It looks good too.

Good for you, Gazza....

Glad to see you reachin past the "black thang" :laughThe flat black was always gonna be temporary anyway. I didn't want to hire a painter and it seemed like the easiest thing to do while I built up the nerve and bought the tools to paint it proper. I liked the flat black a lot at first, but it just seemed too depressing lately.

That doesn't mean I'm gonna get all crazy and start putting any new chrome on it though :roflblack

Looking good now but when you do the fender or fenders i think it will bring out the paint even more so. Maybe even the sidecovers too. What kind of tube did you use for your sight glass? It looks good too.I think the fenders will help too. I took the rear off and started getting it ready tonight. I might leave the front flat black though. I really hate the front fender and would leave it off it it didn't rain every other day here. I'm lazy though and 4 bolts is too much work so I want to get it down to one bolt or a pin. I'm thinking I might drill the rivets out of the front fender so the bracket comes off, then weld a bolt up through the top of that and mount it permenant to the forks, then use a wing nut to hold the fender on. Faster to put it on or off that way :D

The tube is just the PVC (or something I don't remember) from the hardware store that the sign said was okay for gas. I'm not sure if it really will be okay yet though. It softened up and stretched when I had gas in it for a day and I've already shortened it by a bit to take up the slack. I'm keeping my eye on it. There was a milky white plastic there too that would work which I might have to change to if this doesn't look like it's going to stay stable :dunno If worse comes to worse I'll fill the holes with JB Weld and tie a racoon tail to the elbows :D

I want an aircleaner insert like that one!I just happened to find that in my junk box when I was looking for something else. It's the insert that came with the SE air cleaner. It was brushed aluminum with a screaming eagle logo painted on it... so I figured WTF lets paint this too. I need some longer bolts to put it on though, didn't think there would be that much of a difference.

Well it started out that I couldn't attach the rack anymore after I put the new taillight on. The rack needed to be cut up in the back and lifted in the center to fit around the light.... so I just used a real long piece to bridge the light.
