Well ive completly torn down my '72 and the engine is almost all apart the only thing I need to do is remove the flywheel. The cases are split but the flywheel is press fit into the left case half. my clymers says I need a hydraulic press to remove it. Is this true or is there something else I can do to get it out.
if you have a hydralic can jack, tou just have to make a frame and you will have your own press. the jig or frame can be time consuming and a pain in the ass so use this advice as last resort or if your set on doing it all yourself. as for tricks to bypass the press, i don't know.

You need a press. Try doing it any other way and you are risking destroying your cases or your crank

I plan on installing a stroker flywheel when rebuilding it and read someplace that I should half case it with the new flywheel, rods and pistions in order to see where the cases need to be clearenced. So im going to have to press the new flywheel in there too when half casing it for clearencing right?

Yes you will. You can buy presses reasonably cheap at Harbor Freight.

You only want to press on the inner Timken bearing on the sprocket shaft so you can mock up your cases/jug to clearance. That way you can remove your flywheel assembly when you do your cutting/grinding.
After all your clearancing & cases cleaned then you can set up outer bearing.
You going with the S&S 74" stroker setup???

Yeah I plan on going with a 4 5/8's flywheel, I originally was just going to get the 74" stroker kit from s&s but the yesterday I when cleaning up the pistions I realized there were 060 over and the s&s kits only come 010 over. So now im looking for a stroker kit that comes with 060 over pistions.

also found out today that my left case is out 40 thousands from all the welding the previous owner did on the case. So insted of getting the crack fixed along with about 5-6 other shitty welds on some bolt holes im gonna try and find a used left case for a 72

S&S sells oversize stroker pistons up to 80 over with the kit.
May I suggest the Andrews R5 cams with the 74" combo. Just requires a bit of head setup but well worth it..
