I have about 20 packs and thinking along the same lines. I don't know how long these 20 packs will last but I THINK I'm finally ready to quit. Hell it's either smoke or ride with prices the way they are and I'd much rather ride. Lets keep in touch. I've been smoking for 35 yrs. I think I've had enough.
kiltbill 5th May 2006, 21:42 Good Luck Jim...:clap

What timing on this thread... I give my warmest regards and well wishes to both of you guys. Last night I was thinking about starting a thread for the same purpose, to find support from this community. I've decided to quit smoking, and start losing weight!
Last Thursday, I joined a gym for the first time in years. I've started to find some physical activity in every day. Oh, and after blazing through a pack on Wednesday (pack-a-day smoker), I haven't had a cigarette in about 38 hours. :)

Hang in there, Lynk! A few more hours and that strong craving subsides...while quitting, I tried hard candy at first when I'd get the smoking urge, but actually found that flippin' carrots worked better! Besides being healthier for me, it kept me from balooning up fifty pounds!
And Mr. Jimi...we're all behind you...it sounds like you're getting mentally prepared and that's the ticket to beating that nicotine demon! :clap
Well, last time I quit, I guess I didn't learn my lesson. :( I went two months, then picked it up again. Anyway, I'm at 60 hours, so the *biggest* cravings should be gone.
Mr. Jimi, it's fun! :p Go for an IBA (Iron Butt) ride, and just get it over with. lol
I wish you the best of luck, Buddy.
denise1955 6th May 2006, 20:48 Jim, I wish you the best of luck with this. You can do it! Think of all the money you'll be saving. Being a non-smoker, whenever I happen to notice what the price of a pack is these days I'm amazed.
Keep us posted!:clap

Xena quit: May 1, 2005
54 weeks, 1 day, 10 hours, 4 seconds have passed
7,588 cigarettes not smoked

money saved to date: $1,897.00
MNewYork 15th May 2006, 23:21 Go for it Mr. J - I quit last September (after 40 years of smoking)... so far so good. I tried to quit many, many times before - this time it looks like I've got it beat. Good luck to you.

Wow Xena 5.00 a pack that is some serious motivation. I only pay 23.87 a carrton for premium brands Winston etc. I have decided Friday is my last day smoking. I have arranged it so for the next 2 weeks I'm going to be so busy I would have a hard time fitting in a cigarette, nothing stressful just busy. Maybe that will help with the heaviest of the withdrawals. Wish me luck I think I'm pretty motivated but who knows.
Little update... 11-1/2 days have passed now, without cigarette. The other night, I sang a song that I had struggled with a month ago, and it came out stronger than ever! (Alice In Chains' "Man In The Box")
Good luck to all!
KC_Sporty_Gal 15th May 2006, 23:39 Good job Lynk! I am a non smoker but both my parents are smokers and I am scared that they will die too young. They are both in their 50's now. I know I can't nag and beg but I really wish they would quit.

yes ma'am xena that was it the quitmeter
Big_Baazzoo 16th May 2006, 00:07 well, I have made a deal with the devil.
I quit smoking, and the money I would have spent goes towards a New (used) Harley.
HHhmmmm.....
No cigs and another bike, vs. all the coffin nails I want and no more motorcycles.
HHhhmmm... I'd like another bike, please, and if it means no smoking, wow. I do not see the downside here. Smoking sux.
IronMick 16th May 2006, 00:52 I used to smoke a pack a day. That was back in about 1970. Then i got married. My wife did not smoke so "i decided" to not smoke in the house. After a few weeks of smoking on the back porch i just did not want to suffer that degradation/humiliation any more so i stopped that.
Then one day at work a co-worker leaned over my desk and arrogantly recited "Hey Mick, i see you are still subject to the weed, eh". He had quit and waited for 1 month before saying anything. Peer pressure; I could no longer smoke at work.
One fine February afternoon the wifey and i were growling at each other. It came to me like a very bright light: i was hung over from the usual Saturday nite party. When i was single this was no problem. You can b1tch at the friends and roommates and they will just get you another beer to shut you up. That does not work well with the one you love. So no more smoking [anything!] and no more drinking at parties.
This was somewhat of a challenge. Took a year or two or three but eventually i could stick to it. A side benefit was that i could really talk to people at parties and genually have a good time - much better than with the booze and smoke.
For some years i had two friends who smoked. These guys were very good friends and workmates also. We would occasionally have dinners at each others homes. On these occasions i would always have a smoke after dinner with the brandy/jack/whatever. It was sharing with a friend and i did not want to give that up. It may have been the only smoke i had that year. Eventually this tradition passed too.
I thought that i would never be able to drink a beer or a coffee without having a cigarette to go with it. When i quit smoking at work i quit the coffee also. I do not know how or when it happened but eventually i could have some scotch or Jack or whatever and not need a smoke.
I do not know how many years it has been since i had a smoke. It was probably in the early 1980s, so that is more than 20 years. I have heard from reliable sources that after 5 years of no smoking your lungs have completely recovered.
It has been many years since i have had the craving. For the past 15 or more years i have found it very difficult to be around cigerate smoke. I hate it. It gets in my hair and in my cloths. When i come home i have to put the cloths in another room [or immediately into the washing machine] and have a shower else i cannot sleep because of the stink. It is gross and discusting.
Make a deal with the gf: every day that you do not smoke you two get to have sex [with each other!]. She'll love it too. Tell her how much you love her every day.
All the best to you guys, eh.
tulsa 16th May 2006, 00:57 I smoke too much, wish I culd stop. Seems to hard though

Good luck to you.My little secret was to treat a cig craving like a food craving, like when your on a diet, the craving goes away.:clap
Your stories got the best of me. Iv'e got about 1/2 a pack left. When they are gone, thats it!! Besides, need the money for GAS. I'm sure the wife will understand. (been after me since she quit). Here I go....................

loki03xlh 16th May 2006, 14:44 What a coincidence that I found this thread. I had been planning on quiting for a while, just not "right" now. I started smoking when I was 13. I told myself that I would quit before I was 31, which will be in about 3 months.
I ran out of smokes last night. Instead of buying another carton, I'm gonna try this quitting thing. Been 8 hours so far. I really missed that morning smoke today. Oh well...
WildWilly 16th May 2006, 15:17 I tell everyone that quitting smoking is easy, I've done it hundreds of times. Smoke free for 30 years and it was the most difficult thing, mentally and physically, that I've ever done. I smoked 3 packs a day and and an ash tray was only for flicking the ashes and putting them out. I never burned tobacco, I smoked it. If quitting doesn't take on your first attempt, try, try again. I have a lot of empathy for anyone trying to quit. Hang in there, you are worth the effort.
Awesome! Chip and Loki, you guys can do it, as long as you are doing it for yourself. In my experience, the 18th hour cravings are the worst. Make it through day one, in its entirity, then keep right on going.
Good luck, guys!
Well.. Back in Xena's first topic on the sunbject a while back had quit then.
Had a rough go and lefe threw me a bit of a curve and well.. Got that monkey on my back again. Been cutting back a little bit each week. Down to about 4 per day now. Got one pack left. Wish me luck.
Do it up; get it done, Kent!
loki03xlh 16th May 2006, 16:55 Nine hours and fifteen minutes. A smoke break sure would be nice right now. So far, I have saved $1.14, lol.
Mr Jimi 16th May 2006, 17:26 All of ya are great! yesterday was my first day of cutting back, I had 12 cigs from my normal 20 per day? and 3 today in 6 hours. I think I'm doing good? I will kick this crap, I want to live longer.

bplinson 16th May 2006, 17:44 I think I am gonna quit too. I am gonna go cold turkey on my trip to the USA next week. Heck, can't smoke in the airplane or in the airports so I might as well. Schnucki says she will quit also but I think it will be easier for her since she smokes yucky ass French cigarettes anyway.
loki03xlh 16th May 2006, 20:52 So far, so good, but the real test will be when I get off work in an hour.

pops53 22nd May 2006, 12:36 Other than the blurred vision, light headedness, insomnia, heart palpitations, irritability, and cravings it's not too bad. When I would get cravings this weekend I'd grab my axe and split firewood. I should be able to heat my house pretty cheaply next year at this rate. Good luck to you Bert. I'm sure what I'm going through now will be well worth it.

Been there done that. The patch did help me. but it prolonged those symtoms when I stopped those.. Did the patch for 6 weeks, 2 21mg, 2 14mg, 2 weeks of cutting the 14's in half.. Was not that bad after that to deal with the withdrawls... Keep up the good work... here add this link to your favorites. It helps. Xena turned me on to it... www.quitmeter.com
pops53 22nd May 2006, 16:50 Jamman I'm doing the cold turkey deal, almost got patches and gum yesterday but like you say I don't want to prolong these symptoms. The heavy duty cravings don't last all that long and if I can keep busy I seem to do much better. I've been a heavy smoker for 35 yrs. so I knew this wouldn't be easy but it is time to quit. Thanks for the support. I've not had any coffee for 2 days and that helps too.
jamman 22nd May 2006, 17:18 My wife quit at the same time as me, She went cold turkey. Glad she didn't have an axe. my hats off to ya.. i was at em for 33 years. And yeah the coffee thing helps.. But it does get better. no regrets now, coffee, beer still not goin back. you wont regret it either..
Right on, Pops! Bert, how're ya doin'? How 'bout you, Jimi?
It's been 18 days since I last smoked a cigarette. Oh, and I've lost about six pounds, too! So, not only do I have more money for my Sporty, but I'm starting to go faster without spending anything. :D
Good luck to all!
kevinhdy 22nd May 2006, 21:11 I quit cold turkey about a year and a half ago after smoking for around 19 years. I didn't use any gum or patches or anything either, they really do prolong the withdraw symptoms and cravings in my case. In prior attempts when I would try to quit, I always avoided the triggers, like staying away from coffee, beer, and I wouldn't go down to the smoking area at work for breaks. This time when I quit, I drank all the coffee I wanted, drank beer, and still went down to the smoking area on my breaks to socialize, and get a break. I really think confronting those triggers really helped, mostly because I only had to alter 1 part of my life, the smoking, and I didn't have to change everything I did just because I quit. I did chew on some cinnamon sticks during major nicotine fits, they really helped.
Mr Jimi 22nd May 2006, 21:26 A short update on me? I am down to 4 packs and down from 20 per day to 10 per day and I will not understand how a person can have coffee and beer without cigarettes?:roflblack

I am down to 4 packs and down from 20 per day to 10 per day and I will not understand how a person can have coffee and beer without cigarettes?
You'll adjust, but remember, the key is that you
have to want to quit and in your mind you have
to be ready to follow through with it.
edit: Did you happen to read through the
thread I started on May 1, 2005 when I
quit cold turkey? If not, read through it.
Lots of others quit and added their experiences.
I just bumped it for you to find easier. :)

Big_Baazzoo 26th May 2006, 12:29 noon today will be 48 hours for me. Man all I almost caved last night, but remembering it's over $7 a pack here reminded me of one reason I quit, and thinking about what I will be able to buy with the money kept me good till bedtime.

incynr8 17th July 2006, 20:06 I'm trying to quit again as well. I have been weak and failed many times over the last 2 years. I have been smoking for 5 years and promised myself to quit now that I got a harley. I chain smoke, but a pack's worth a day, many many at night with a beer after work. Bars are going to be a bit rough for a while and morning coffee, that's where I fail every time so far.
My father has smoked since 13, now 61 and he's addicted to the little lozenges now, taking them for almost a year. I suppose it is better, but I fear the use of such myself now.

I made the same promise to myself when I took delivery of
my new sporty in june 2004. Didn't actually quit until
May 1st, 2005 but I've been smoke free since. :D
It was very difficult as it was my second time quitting.
I had quit once before in 1988 when my Dad passed away,
then started up again in 1996 for whatever reason.
N.e. way, I just wanted to show my support and say that you all
are doing great, and for the ones who haven't taken
that second step (the first step imo is deciding you're done
with smoking), you CAN do it! :banana

9 months here. Almost don't miss it anymore, only when i'm stuck in traffic for more than half an hour do i start to feel having a smoke.
CT1200 21st September 2006, 15:12 Three months here. But a pack would last me 3-4 days so I wasn't a pack a day smoker to begin with. But I smell it right away now. And when I do have one I get a little sick so thats a good sign.
cgp-1200R 21st September 2006, 16:42 9 months clean here, still crave them everyday,
going to take a test and cut my life insurance premium in half :clap

Well I've decided that enough is enough....I'm going to try to break the chains this Monday....I have been a smoker pretty much steady for 30+ years....quit for a couple of years at one point then right back at it.....Smokes here average $10.00 a pack...and I can smoke a pack or more a day easy....so if not for my health...which is crap...then for my $$$.
Wish me luck!

Rawhide 11th October 2006, 03:23 I recomend Walmart Brand Nicotine gum. $22.xx for 50 pieces of the 4 Mg. strength. I have been on it for about 12 weeks and it is amazing how easy it has been. Started out on about 8 pieces per day, went down to 4 fairly quick. In process of going to 3 a day. After that 2 and then none.I have been smoking for over 50 years and never could quit before. When my 69 yr. old cousin got lung cancer, I said , this is it! She died 11 weeks after they found it.I also bought my new 06 883Xl on the day I quit. That was the consolation prize. Try it, It may work as easy for you as it has for me!

I understand that. As a truck driver, there is a lot more stress in my live than you might think(think traffic in Chicago, Toronto, Atlanta...).
I used the Nicorette Inhaler, it cost about the same as cigs at the beginning, it gives you your fix of nicotine when you want or need, and the best part in my opinion, i had something to do with my fingers. That was the hardest habit to break, the "hand-to-mouth ritual".
I used the inhaler like real smokes for the first week then i started to use it less and less. After 3 weeks i was done, haven't smoked or used anything else since.
The first day i used it was December 7th 2005, in Chicago and that day somebody hit my trailer ripping the doors of it. But i stuck in there and sucked on that inhaler but i did not smoke since. Now i dont crave it 99.99% of the time.
(It also helps if you try to stay away from smokers for a few weeks.)
From Pfizer Canada (http://www.pfizer.ca/english/newsroom/press%20releases/default.asp?s=1&releaseID=124):
IT’S OKAY TO INHALE
~ Launch of the new Nicorette* Inhaler Means Smokers can get a Handle on Their Cravings ~
TORONTO, Ontario - June 01, 2004
Canadian smokers are actually encouraged to inhale with the news today from Pfizer Consumer Healthcare that the Nicorette* Inhaler is now approved and available in Canada. The Nicorette* Inhaler is an innovative nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), designed to help smokers quit smoking by reducing the urge to smoke while satisfying the hand-to-mouth ritual. Smokers who seek therapeutic assistance with the Nicorette* Inhaler can double their chances of success, when compared to placebo.
"The launch of the Nicorette* Inhaler is great news for smokers who want to quit - even those who may have failed either going 'cold turkey' or using another smoking cessation aid," says Harvey Leopold, a pharmacist in Whitby, Ontario. "Recognizing that smoking is both an addiction and a habit, the Nicorette* Inhaler reduces the craving to smoke, while also providing the comfort of the hand-to-mouth ritual. Quitting smoking is never easy but it can be done. With the desire and choosing the method right for them, smokers can free themselves from tobacco dependence."
GETTING A HANDLE ON CRAVINGS
Smokers repeat the hand-to-mouth ritual approximately 200 times a day, or 73,000 times a year. Available without a prescription, the Nicorette* Inhaler is the only smoking cessation product to wean smokers from both the primary reinforcement (nicotine) and the secondary reinforcement (hand-to-mouth). In a survey, 41 per cent of smokers said that one of the reasons their last quit attempt failed was because they missed the hand-to-mouth gratification they've come to depend on after years of smoking.1
Despite the increased awareness about the dangers of tobacco use and the growing number of anti-smoking campaigns, smoking continues to be a public health issue in Canada. An estimated 5.1 million Canadians - or 20 per cent of the population - continue to smoke today;2 smoking is responsible for one-in-five deaths in Canada alone.3
ABOUT THE NICORETTE* INHALER
The Nicorette* Inhaler is the only NRT that weans the smoker from the hand-to-mouth habit. The Nicorette* Inhaler consists of a mouthpiece and a cartridge containing a nicotine-impregnated plug. The smoker inhales through the mouthpiece, using either shallow or deep puffs.
The inhaled air contains nicotine, which is absorbed mainly through the mouth and throat, replacing a percentage of the nicotine that smokers would otherwise get from smoking. The inhaler releases less nicotine per puff than a cigarette; in this way, the withdrawal effects of not smoking are less severe. As the body adjusts to not smoking, the use of the nicotine inhaler is decreased gradually over several weeks. Finally, use is stopped altogether.
"The Nicorette* Inhaler is a valuable smoking cessation tool, providing smokers with low levels of nicotine, without the harmful ingredients found in cigarettes such as tars and carbon monoxide, allowing them to break the smoking habit," adds Harvey Leopold.
The recommended treatment with the Nicorette* Inhaler is six to 12 cartridges a day, for approximately three months. If necessary, this can be followed by a gradual reduction over the next six to 12 weeks.
IMPROVE YOUR CHANCES WITH AN NRT
Nicotine replacement therapies are effective stop-smoking medications that are approved by Health Canada - available in the form of nicotine gums (Nicorette*), nicotine patches (Nicoderm*), and now the Nicorette* Inhaler - without a prescription. The Nicorette* Inhaler is the only NRT in the form of an inhaler.
The Nicorette* Inhaler, Nicorette* and Nicoderm* are safe for smokers when used as directed. They provide nicotine to the smoker without the dangerous toxins that are present in cigarettes and cigarette smoke. These toxins, not nicotine, are responsible for the vast majority of diseases caused by smoking.
Statistics show that only five per cent of smokers who try to quit cold turkey will succeed.4 Smokers who seek therapeutic assistance with an NRT can double their chances of success when compared to placebo.

I never quit ANYTHING...:laugh
Kudos to you that can do it.....
I quit quitting after about 3 days.....:o
Denis Leary says it best:
I love to smoke. I smoke seven thousand packs a day, ok. And I am never !!!!ing quitting! I don't care how many laws they make. What's the law now? You can only smoke in your apartment, under a blanket, with all the lights out? Is that the rule now, huh?! The cops are outside, "We know you have the cigarettes. Come out of the house with the cigarettes above your head." "You'll never get me copper! I'm never coming out, you hear? I got a cigarette machine right here in my bedroom. Yeah!"
Know what I'm gonna do? I'm gonna get one of those tracheotomies. So I can smoke two cigarettes at the same time. I'm gonna get nine tracheotomies all the way around my neck. I'll be Tracheotomie Man! "He can smoke a pack at a time! He's Tracheotomie Man!"
I'm looking forward to cancer, man. I want that throat cancer. That's the best kind. You know why? You get that throat cancer, you get that voice box thing. Know what I'm talking about? ..[Talking as if has a voice box].. Sure it's scary, but you can make a lot of money with a voice box. Get a voice box, walking around the streets of Manhattan, "[VB] You got any spare change?" "Ahhh!! Here's my whole wallet, get away from me! Ahh!"
Imagine a whole family with voice boxes. That'd be creepy, wouldn't it? They'd be out in that backyard everyday during the summer. "[VB] Dad, can we go to the beach?" "[VB] Yes, get your mother and the dog. We'll leave right now. Sparky, come here." "[VB] Arf Arf Arf Arf Arf Arf Arf" Ahhhh!!
Or the ultimate irony. A guy with a voice box pulling up to the drive through window at McDonald's. That has to suck, huh? "Can I help you?" "[VB] Big Mac and a large order of fries." "Stop making fun of me." "[VB] I'm not making fun of you." "I'm getting the manager." "[VB] Get the !!!!ing manager, I don't care."
I can remember a time in this country when men were proud to get cancer, God dammit! When it was a sign of manhood! John Wayne had cancer twice. Second time, they took out one of his lungs. He said, "Take 'em both! Cuz I don't !!!!in' need 'em! I'll grow gills and breathe like a fish!"
Babe Ruth, greatest baseball player to ever play the game. He had a voic box. He was the first American to have a voice box. Yeah! "[VB] This is Babe Ruth, the Sultan of Swat, the Bambino, I smoke twenty-five God damn cuban cigars a day. I had meat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I !!!!ed eighteen prostitutes a night! 'course, I'm dead now. I'm up here in heaven. Lou Gehrig is up here with me. God love Lou Gehrig. Jesus Christ, poor Lou Gehrig. Died of Lou Gehrig's disease. How the hell did he not see that coming? You know. We used to tell him, Lou, there's a disease with your name all over it, pal! There ain't no Babe Ruth disease, I'll tell you that much right now. Have a hot dog and a Hummer. Go ahead, it's on me."
I don't know. Personally, I think Billy Martin said it best when he said, "Hey! I can drive!" Because we tried to be nice to you non-smokers. We !!!!ing tried. Okay? You wanted your own sections in the restaurants. We gave you that, huh. But that wasn't enough for you. Then you wanted the airplanes. We gave you the whole God damn plane! You happy now? You own the !!!!ing plane! I'd like an explanation about that one folks because I will guarantee you if the plane is going down, the first announcement you're gonna hear is, "Folks, this is your Captain speaking. Look, uhm, light 'em up, 'cause we're going down, okay. I got a carton of Camels non-filters, I'll see you on the ground. Take it easy." Actually, it'd be more like this, "[VB] This is your Captain speaking. Smoke 'em if ya got 'em. Rrrr Rrrr"
The filters the best part. That's where they put the heroine. Only us real good smokers know that !!!!ing secret. Yeah, we tried to be nice to you non-smokers. We tried. But you just !!!!ing badger us, you know? You won't leave us alone! You got all your little speeches you're always giving to us. All these little facts that you dig out of a newspaper or pamphlet and you store that little nugget in your little !!!!ing head, and we light up and you spew 'em out at us, don't ya? I love these little facts. "Well you know. Smoking takes ten years off your life." Well it's the ten worst years, isn't it folks? It's the ones at the end! It's the wheelchair kidney dialysis !!!!ing years. You can have those years! We don't want 'em, alright!? And I guarantee if I'm still alive, I'll be smoking then. I'll be in my wheelchair, with my adult diapers on and my twenty-five year old non- smoking born again christian son behind me. I'll be going, "Hey! Make sure you wipe this time. I was itching all week for Christ's sake! And get me some more wippets. I'm almost out, you !!!!ing pussy! Come on!"
Because you're always telling us, "You know, ever cigarette takes six minutes off your life. If you quit now you can live an extra ten years. If you quit now, you can live an extra twenty years." Hey, I got two words for you, ok. Jim Fix. Remember Jim Fix? The big famous jogging guy? Jogged fifteen miles a day. Did a jogging book. Did a jogging video. Dropped out of a heart attack when? When he was !!!!ing jogging, that's when! What do you wanna bet it was two smokers who found the body the next morning and went, "Hey! That's Jim Fix, isn't it?" "Wow, what a !!!!ing tragedy. Come on, lets go buy some buds."
It's always the yogurt sprout eating mother !!!!ers who get run over buy a bus driven by a guy who smokes three and a half packs a day. "Sorry officer, I didn't see him. I was too busy smoking!"
milmat1 21st October 2006, 00:24 Went to Dr. Today. This is the third time this year for Bronckitis / pneumonia. Doc ordered some Pulmanary testing, But said I have Chronic Bronckitis, Mainly from the 30 years of smoking. Basicaly my lungs are shot and stay infected, Hence the reason I catch every bug that goes by too.
If I don't stop now I will end up carrying around a breathing machine (A TURBO!) So I have got to join you on this one. This is not going to be easy as I have gave half hearted tries in the past.
If I end up with an oxegen tank will you help me figure out how to pipe the oxegen into the Carb on my scoot. Maybe I could just fill it with NITROS and me and the bike would run like a scalded hant !!!!

Rawhide 8th November 2006, 02:57 HoosierXLC, Go to Walmart and buy the Equate brand nicotine. I did this Aug. 7 the day I bought my new 883XL and really haven't wanted to smoke. Hang in there, i smoked 2 packs a day untill right after hurricane rita. That makes a little over a year and it's now starting to feel great without any thoughts of smoking at all! It took me about 9 or 10 months to get to that point, it's a bad addiction. It's not just the money you save but your not putting poison in your body anymore.:clap ;)

believe it or not. I started back for that reason alone. back 15 years or so ago.. i was off them for 9 months that time... Alot easier this time around , can't figure out what i even saw in them.. Drinkin makes you weak for a while.
kind of strange the way the addiction talks you into smoking again.... you think your sense of smell is open now , wait about 6 months Bert it becomes alive..
But all in all i feel better... So it's workin for me... :banadanc
debster 20th November 2006, 23:20 Dang! 2-1/2 packs a day? I give you a ton of credit for giving 'em up. How's the first week been? Doing good, I hope.

Quebeker 7th December 2006, 13:57 Dont want to brag,

Because,
one year ago, today, I had my last cigarette.
Now, if i could only lose the "new" extra ponds.
vpats 7th December 2006, 14:31 Good Job-
I did this about 3 years ago, cold turkey. I had 3 left in the pack and decided it's now or never, carried those 3 cigarettes around with me for about 3 months. I set em on my desk at work, on the coffee table at home, figured if I really, really needed one it was right there - all I had to do was pick it up and light it up. I finally tossed those 3 last cigarettes and never looked back.
Aldra 7th December 2006, 14:51 Interesting thread in th XL-Forum. But this was also one of my goal when I stopped smoking. The reward for stopping was my Sportster.
Well, it is now more than 2 years ago when I decided to stop. I smoked 3 pakets /day at this time. It was time to say STOP now. From one day to the other I stopped and never touched or thought again to a cigarette. After one year of beeing "clean" I bought myself the Sportster.
So in a way it fits in this forum too.

dakota_dj 8th December 2006, 01:29 Just started today, last cig before I went to work. I bought the Commit lozenges at WallyWorld. They seemed to help. Ohio's Smoke Free law went into effect today and I decided I am going to quit. I have been smoking 30 years. I did the math and in the 11 years that my wife and I have been married, we could have paid our farm off with the money that went up in smoke ($70,000.00). My wife is going to try to quit also.

Tim, Tell her I said not to "try" and quit, just do it. There is no trying, there's only doing it! It can be done and many of your brothers in arms have proven that throughout this post. I used to smoke (24 years) and quit cold turkey in January of 2004. I've forgotten about it for so long now that I actually missed my second anniversary of being smoke free. Three years comes up in another 14 days. :)
To help with the first few weeks of cravings, I would chew the Nicorette gum,and week by week it got easier and easier. I say that after the first three days, you turn the first corner, and then you start counting weeks, and before you know it, you can drop the gum and ween yourself from that as well. Cravings will still come as that's a mental thing, but a few minutes later, it's long forgotten. I made things easier by weakening to the lightest cigs over 4 weeks prior to my quit date.
I never want to taste that crap again. I am the one in control of my life now. I only say this in hopes that it helps at least one other person to see it through. If I can do it, anyone can!
Congrats to all of you who have quit.
dakota_dj 21st December 2006, 10:25 Two weeks today for me and no smokes. My wife did accupunture a week ago and so far she has not smoked since it was done. Keeping the fingers crossed.

Catolina, I am on Chantix also. Been on the 1mg for 4 days now. But I'm still smoking....just not nearly as much. Yesterday I smoked 5 cigs. That's down from a 37 year, 1 1/2-2 pack a day habit. It's getting easier but I know just as soon I throw ALL the cigs away I will get antsy. This is the absolute hardest thing I've ever tried. At this moment all I want to do is get up and go outside and smoke. I'm not jumpy....just the habit of smoking kicking in. The Chantix is doing its job of replacing the nicotene craving, but the habit dies hard. I just don't have enough to keep me busy at work. I'm kinda like the Maytag repairman of Fedex. So I sit here at this desk reading, surfing....anything to keep my mind busy. At home, I can usually find a repair project that I've put off doing to keep my mind off smoking.
Today.......so far..........2 cigs. Gonna try to make it only 3 total today.
Tomorrow......who knows.
cgp-1200R 31st January 2007, 18:23 Hang in there, Its worth all the crap you are goig through now. You can do it !
cgp-1200R 31st January 2007, 18:24 One year, three weeks, three days, 3 hours, 3 minutes and 29 seconds. 5836 cigarettes not smoked, saving $802.57. Life saved: 2 weeks, 6 days, 6 hours, 20 minutes.
Just think of the mods i can buy or the payments i can make with that $800.
I miss smoking everyday, 1 is too many and a millions not enough.
But in the long run its worth it.
ssteiner53 4th February 2007, 15:16 To all those wanting to quit smoking, I salute you. I quit in 2003, it was "easy" for me, was on the cardiac floor for 3.5 days, and for some reason, they just didn't want to let me go out for a smoke:) When I got out, the first thing I wanted was a smoke, but then I realized the physical addiction was over and I was just fighting the physchological addiction. Haven't had a smoke since, only have wanted one a couple of times. Believe it or not, if you start exercising some at the same time, you won't gain weight (wish I had done that) and you will feel much better too. Remembere, it's kind of like AA approach, one day at a time. With every day, you will be a little stronger with your resolve to stay away. I was a 1.5 - 2 pack a day smoker for about 30 years, and if I can do it, anyone can. BTW, that was my third attempt. Once with gum, once with the patch, last time cold turkey. From the research I have done since, "they" say those who quit cold turkey have a better chance of staying off.
Good luck,
Steve
boat_doc_8 4th February 2007, 15:29 Ditto on the 5.5 years. After 42 years of being a heavy smoker I quit cold turkey. It`s certainly not easy but it`s well worth doing. Go for it guys.Look at the money you`ll save. That will pay for a new scoot in no time. Good luck guys.

My Wife is trying to quit, and it's really hard for her, and I don't know what I can do to help her. Especially when she asks me for permission to have one smoke, or buy a pack and let her have them one at a time. I feel like a real badguy, becuase I don't want to give her any, but it usually starts an arguement. She hasn't had any smokes in 5 days now, but we are both wearing thin on each other. How can I help her through this and not be the badguy.
Thanks,
Mike

you can't make her quit , it is an addiction like all get out.. no smokes at all is the best way , and remember it does get better.. I am 1 month away from my first smoke free year.. i smoked 4 packs a day.. I did it . she will too when she is ready..

I'm on day 13. I've had several times when I've REALLY wanted a cigarette. Smoking has always been my way of "coping" with situations. I get angry, I smoke. I get upset, I smoke. I want to celebrate or I'm happy about something, I smoke.
Friday of last week was someone's birthday. One gift that came in wasn't working properly. The other gift he didn't seem too excited about. I was just feeling devastated. {emotional roller coaster thing.} And I really wanted a cigarette. I had to ask myself, "What will having a cigarette help?" The item that was not working properly will still have to be returned. And my smoking wasn't going to make him happier with the other item. He liked the other item well enough but I couldn't see that in my emotional state.
Why is she asking you if she can smoke? Quitting smoking is something she needs to be ready to do. Me and someone else quit together. If he asked me if he could have a cigarette? I'd ask him, "What will it fix?" Can't say that I'd tell him yes or no. I'd just try to "reason" with him so he could hopefully come up with the "no" answer on his own.

I am taking this also to quit. I am on the second day of 1 mg and you're right, the physical cravings really aren't there, it is the just the habit that I am working on right now. If I light a cigarette I only smoke about half and then I don't want it anymore...am down to about 8 cigarettes a day and thinking that Tuesday will be my quit date. Two others that I know who quit on this, it took them about two weeks before they put them down for good. This stuff is really amazing I think. My husband said that if it works for me, he will do it too. He has seen me try to quit many times before and always fail. I feel really confident this time and frankly just want to be done with it.
Cantolina - I had some nausea too when first taking this and found that if you drink a whole glass of water and eat something, I don't get it then and so far have had no other problems.
I hope everyone keeps checking in to see how we are all doing. Good luck!

Mike, frankly I don't think it is fair of her to put you in that position. This is her habit to quit and you shouldn't have to give her permission or not...She may want to try this Chantix as well, it really does take away the nicotine cravings and after a while they don't taste the same and you don't get that ahh feeling when you light one up. I feel like if I am anxious, etc now, when I smoke a cigarette I still feel exactly the same and it is like re-teaching your body that smoking isn't going to make a bit of difference in how you feel. There is also a website called www.quitnet.com that has clubs and forums. There are two clubs for Chantix users, you may want to tell her to check it out just to get an idea of how people are responding to this. And I definitely believe that you have to have the right mind set no matter what you use to quit with. Good luck to you and your wife.

HDandME 18th February 2007, 23:52 Hi, my name is Sean. I have an addiction to cigs. I am trying to quit, last week I did pretty good. Averaged 3 a day for the week. I am usually almost a pack a day. Once friday came, I went up to the garage, and when the beer comes out, so do the smokes. I had 4 or 5 today, and wasn't going to buy another pack, but as luck would have it I found an almost full pack on the ground. In fact I am smoking one right now.
What helps, gum, patches, cold turkey?
I have found sunflower seeds to be helpful. Keeps the mouth busy.

I was a pack a day smoker for 40 years. I quit smoking cold turkey last year. I had my last cigarette on March 17, 2006. What helped me was chewing gum, Altoids, and cinnamon sticks. I got the cinnamon sticks in the spice isle of the grocery store. I kept one in my shirt pocket. When I felt a craving for a smoke, I would just take a few drags on the cinnamon stick until the urge went away.

Notabiker 7th March 2007, 22:40 My husband got a script for Chantix. He quit in about two weeks. Our insurance covered it, but otherwise it's about $100. He has been smoking since 1962. Took the pills and within a week my house was smoke-free:banana That was January 3, '07 and still hasn't picked up a smoke.
Ok, it has been a WEEK!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not one cigarette, not one puff on a cigarette!!!!!!! I am a little psyched :) On with the rant..........
On the other hand....Jamman, you are right. I think my husband is a tad disgruntled that I have not smoked. Yesterday, he was actually out on the front porch smoking when I got home...he knows right about what time I get home and he had this silly grin on his face and couldn't understand why I got pissed off? I had specifically asked him not to smoke on the front porch when I get home cause that is a big trigger. When I get home, I put the bike up on the porch and usually we would sit out there and smoke a cigarette and talk about our day. I told him I thought he was setting me up to fail. Not only that, when I asked him to get rid of the rest of the carton the Monday before last, he did, but made sure I knew where it was........wtf?
One other thing....husband always bought each of us a carton when he got paid on Friday....I said that when I quit, I wanted the $25 that he paid for the carton every week....I might add, that the only thing he pays for are the cigarettes, grocery shopping and his own insurance...everything else, I pay for, but I make more money...Well, he gave it to me the first week and came up with some lame excuse for the second week....I went off about that...where is my monetary incentive? Everyone talks about how much money you save but I didn't even see it. If I was smoking, he would be spending that money anyway with a question....I would like to save for something special...is that too much to ask?
I really think he didn't think I was going to make this far and he is getting a little disgruntled. I am not on his case to quit but I did tell him that I wasn't going to be wheelin' his butt around in a wheelchair with a tank of oxygen in my retirement years cause he wouldn't quit smoking....Sorry people, I am a little agitated to say the least, I really didn't think he would be so threatened by this if that is even what it is.....What do you think?

Might as well jump on to this bandwagon.
It's been 2 weeks for me as well. Of course i had a little help the 1st week... Hospital stay.replaced nicotine for morphine,LOL Been taking Chantrix as well, and it's helped(i think?)
Had some friends over and they were NO help, One of them, even left a cigarette behind "just in case"... Yes, Misery loves company....
wishing everyone who's trying to quit, great success !!

I would rather WANT a cigarette once in a while for the rest of my life than to ever NEED a cigarette again. Again good luck and welcome.

Thanks man!! Today is ONE MONTH!! I have been sick as a dog for about the last five days so that has made it easier. I feel really good though. At this point, the only way I will smoke a cigarette is if I take one, put it my mouth and light it up. I don't think anyone is going to come along, knock me down, stick one in my mouth, light it and make me inhale. I mean really, it is all up to me and if I went this long, I don't want to smoke. It has always been up to me and it has always been my decision, it isn't because of some outside influence or situation, it is how I choose to react to it....it is definitely a mind shift and when you get it; you wonder what the hell took so long....its really so easy. :doh

Today is actually 24 days for me....My "NEW" cigarettes are not as "satisfying" as the Marlboro Red's I smoked for 20 years.... But the Orbit Bubblemint does do a good job of the "Tension Release" I need...
I've forgotten to take the Chantix many times, Which is a good thing Since I still haven't had a smoke...
(Correction, I did inhale a drag the other night, what a NASTY taste.. OMG. I was almost sick from it..) I view it as a POSITIVE enforcement..
Redd, try to keep taking the chantix as prescribed or talk to your doctor about stopping earlier than recommended. You may want to check out www.quitnet.com and search the clubs for "chantix". It is really helpful to hear how others are doing with this medication too. Everyone is different though but it is a new medication and was fast tracked through the FDA. For me? I feel it has made this journey completely "doable" as never before. 31 days and I hope to stop counting very soon...:banana :banadanc :banana :banadanc :banana
bud095 1st April 2007, 02:23 90 days no smoking!:clap im happy!
ReddTigger 4th April 2007, 06:49 :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap
1 month smoke free, FANTASTIC...
been really tough the last couple days at work.. been eyeing some of my co-workers while they're smoking, and actually salivating... Just grab some bubblemint orbit gum, and walk away....
ALthough it's been a month, I've only finished 2 packs of chantix.. I seem to forget to take it a lot. (which is good as long as I Don't smoke, right)
Anyways.. good job to everyone's who's quit.. Looking to get myself to that "YEAR" mark.:banadanc :banadanc :banadanc

I do appreciate it :)
phantom 4th April 2007, 12:42 I quit Christmas day .I got short of breath bringing up Christmas gifts from the basement.Decided it was time. I have wanted to light up several times even dreamed of smoking, what stops me though is not health related, what stops me is the pain and agony I went through the first couple of weeks.I do not want to have to go through that again.Good Luck to you all out there who have quit, keep it up.Oh,yeah also now when I stand next to someone who smokes it gags me,Can't believe that I smelled like that.
Thanks Jamman!! It is 35 days and today has been a struggle, really, for the first time. I have really been craving all day and can honestly say that this is the first time I have felt like this. But I am NOT going to smoke and I think I will go to bed where I can stay out of trouble  "Phantom": I hear what your sayin'...I definitely do not want to go through this again ever, so I CHOOSE NOT to smoke. Good luck to you on your journey...Have a good night y'all...
ReddTigger 8th April 2007, 06:15 IT's been rough the last couple of days for me.. I've been craving one at work... Not really at home, But at work.. Seems the stress is getting to me.....
I am still forgetting to take my Chantix every time, usually it's like once a day....
Least I'll get my money's worth out of it ...
Now I gotta see if the propecia works..
cuban_sporty_rider 8th April 2007, 06:48 ive been trying to quit on and off lately. i smoke about a pack and a half a day. i thought it would be easier while deployed....(last time it was harder to get smokes out here), but sure as hell you can get them all over now. it is stressful out here from time to time, but thats not the hard part for me. im a mechanic out here. i work outside all day, it is too easy to just light up whenever. and it doesnt help that the local nationals smoke like none i have ever seen!!! and they are constantly offering you thier local smokes.....they kind of expect that if they all smoke, we in the US must all smoke too.
cyn 19th April 2007, 17:00 50 smokefree days today
:banadanc :banana :banadanc
milmat1 19th April 2007, 17:08 50 smokefree days today
:banadanc :banana :banadanc
Congrats Dude !!
I am getting ready to quit ! (I think!!)
etomorrow 28th April 2007, 20:32 i made a deal with myself, when the new bike is delivered, the smoking stops. not sure if i'll try a patch, or just see if i can will my way out of smoking.
jamez1965 31st May 2007, 03:14 Wow, ok, I'll jump on in... I've been on the patch for about 2 months now and it's working for me.
I've more than doubled my cafeine (coffee) intake. It's like my body craves some kind of stimulant, so I give it coffee. Hasn't affected my daily routine or sleep though, so that's good. Besides, no one bags on you if you die of cancer from drinking too much coffee.
Good luck to everyone out there quitting! I know they're just words on a screen that have been typed a million times, but you really can do it!
txsporty 5th June 2007, 04:57 Update: Been a year and a half!!!!:clap :clap

Mustang12 8th June 2007, 14:49 Seventeen Years ago I tossed my last pack. Cold turkey. I craved them for about another ten years, now the smell of cigarettes makes me sick. The cost back then was .75-1.25 per pack. Now it's too expensive to smoke.
milkacow 1st August 2007, 16:35 ok, has anyone heard or tried using a skoal bandit between your toes as sort-of a patch?
Cookiey_Man 25th September 2007, 02:15 I smoked for 'bout 43 years and I was at 1 pack/day. I finally decided to quit. I had a script for Chantix....a stop-smoking helper...but when I read some of the side effects.... strange (:wonderlan stranger:wonderlan ) dreams and/or nausea and more..I decided that I did not need it. Besides, I/you, the smoker, must to want to quit and be ready to quit....you decide...And the Chantix would cost $125.00/month and the usual time-to-quit is 3 months...$375.00 ....not covered by insurance..
I went InternetSportyCrusin :p looking for information on quiting cold turkey.
I found Why Quit (http://whyquit.com/) and stopped in for a look.
Lots of good stuff...like other sites...then I found on their home page a link to Joel's Reinforcement Articles (http://whyquit.com/joel/) .
On 09.01.2007 I read Joel Spitzer's Never Take Another Puff (http://whyquit.com/NTAP_large_print_212_pages.pdf) and I haven't had another puff since.:banadanc
For me...it clicked...your mileage may vary...but if you want to quit check it out....or pass it on to someone you know that may benefit from it.
I have not gained any weight or had any nicotine cravings...There is much to be said for the power of prayer ... works for me...
The netbook by Mr. Spitzer is a great source of straight ahead information, and a plan to follow that is very simple...
Never Take Another Puff!
Good luck to you
Peace
Cookiey
stealthammer 18th November 2007, 20:26 Best way for a real smoker to quit is...CHANTIX Check it out ....
I agree, Chantix rocks! After a week-and-a-half I really had "lost" my taste for tobacco andwas down to 2-3 a day. After three weeks I quit completely (mostly I just kept forgetting to light up). Cool stuff. The only interesting side-effect was very vivid and conscious awareness of my dreams....
64physhy 19th November 2007, 06:55 I tried that hypnotherapy last week to stop dipping. It was free on base. I left thinking it didn't work, but it must have done something because it's been 4 days now and hasn't been hard to resist.
Bill2 19th November 2007, 07:36 ok, has anyone heard or tried using a skoal bandit between your toes as sort-of a patch?
It sounds like a hillbilly is yanking your chain.
milmat1 26th November 2007, 03:17 ok, has anyone heard or tried using a skoal bandit between your toes as sort-of a patch?
I have heard of that !! Dont know if its true ???
I am over 19 Weeks now With No Smokes, I Used Chantix for about 6 weeks or so then dropped them. Be carefull Because when I dropped the chantix. It was like starting over with the Cravings ! But by that time all the Nicotine is out of your system. That helps a Lot !!
Chantix WORKS !!!!
PADAVE 26th November 2007, 18:41 I also used Chantix, smoked a pack a day for 15 years, did the full three months of the Chantix(miss the strange dreams though...I forget know that I even smoked some times. I just hope PA finally passes their no smoking laws sometine soon. 115 days smoke free

cyclepartsmania 16th December 2007, 17:49 I quit by using the inhaler about 3 years ago, now I don't even think about smoking. With these high gas prices it's a good thing too because I'd have to decide between smoking and going places!
Good luck to you, it is very hard buy well worth it.
DudleyDoRight 31st December 2007, 16:41 I smoked for about 25 years. It's been more than 10 years since I quit. I saved and invested the cig money. I paid cash for my '06 from this stash, and have plenty left over. Not getting lung cancer is a nice bonus, too.:)
jamez1965 30th January 2008, 18:49 It looks like I've quit smoking for good. The hardest part was the "habit" part. It took over a month before my brain was ok with the fact that there's no cigarette after eating, first thing in the morning, working outside, etc. For me, getting out o |
