Okay, there is snow here today....I'm not a happy camper! Thinking of heading down to Texas next winter for a couple (or three) weeks, just to RIDE!! Plans are to "drag" the Sporty behind the cage, till I can ride it. Then, ditch the cage at a Harley dealer, and ride into Texas! Never been to the Lone Star State before, so I'll be looking for any and all info on what to do, and where to do it? And, if I can hook up with fellow bikers, that would be great too. Ideas?

Never been to the Lone Star State before

I've lived there before, you ain't missing nothing, unless you like totally flat land. It gets pretty once you head into the hill country. But make sure you get some of the texas bbq :smoke

Since you are going to be that close come on over to Louisiana and get some really good food. Texas is not all flat and ugly. Hill country is an awesome ride. Austin is a very fun place to go also.

Go to west Texas. Balmorhea, Fort Davis, Alpine, Presidio, Big Bend National Park. I was born and raised there. Great scenery, good roads and nice weather. The Hill country in Central Texas is nice also, but no mountains, just "hills".
Drop me a line if you head this way.

Depending on where you go in Texas, winter riding can be challenging. Here on the Gulf Coast, winters are generally quite mild and riding is pretty much a year round proposition. However, you get into the high country in winter and it can be QUITE cold. Particularly at night. Here in Houston, I have no problem riding year round. Although in winter you take your chances with the rain. It's usually not that big of an issue though. All in all, I would LOVE to see you tour Texas, it has some stunningly beautiful scenery in places. If you do the hill country, be sure to do the "twisted sisters". A tour down the Intra-Coastal Waterway would be well worth while. However if you just want warm I think Florida would be a surer bet.

Texas is kinda big: East-to-west 802 miles; North-to-south 809 miles.

In Dec/Jan/Feb and maybe March, stay south of Interstate 20 and the riding is good. Hill country a definite spot (Austin area and to the west); the Ft. Davis/Alpine/Big Bend area is nice also.

Up around Texarkana (Texas/Arkansas/Louisiana juncture) you start to get closer to the Ozarks; depending on the weather, there may be some foliage but not worth making a trip to see it. The Eastern seaboard has the market on foliage.

Here in Waco, I ride year around; temps in the 30s in January/February but roads are clear. Just flat; in fact, this is the only place in the world that I can be up to my a$$ in mud and still get hit in the face with sand! Damn! It's windy, too!

If you can locate a copy of Ride Texas Magazine, I would do so. They put out a Reader's Choice edition each year (I think this year's comes out next month) with the Top 10 rides, places to stay, eat etc. It will give you more info on some of the rides listed above.

There are great rides all over the state, including many that take you over Historic routes. It just depends on your taste.

Have a great time!

Austin TX would be a fun over nighter, 2 nighter, if you like live music and drinks... GREAT BBQ and BREAKFAST TACOS all over Texas...

Houston TX rocks, several XLF members there... and a few in Austin too... Houstin is huge, has everything... but nothing specific IMO. :D Go to a sports game and the like...

PLENTY of nice fun small towns, Marble Falls, well I thought I was gonna list a bunch but thats the only one coming to mind. HA.

And Texas may be flat and sometimes desolate too... but I would think it a GREAT choice to tour around... the state is awesome and has a great vibe too... the same for LA and its pretty close. I'd go all the way to the big easy.

West of Austin is a place called Enchanted Rock. I went there last December on the advice of someone here and it was really cool!

I don't know how soon you plan on coming down but galveston island has one of the fastest growing bike rallys that runs nov.2-5 It started 4 years ago with 40,000 people the first year, over 200,000 the 2nd year, and 400,000 last year. It's one big party with bands this year like mark farner (grand funk railroad) fri nite and bad company and steppinwolf sat. nite. The rally is free but the concerts above cost about $20 or so. Galveston is about 45 minutes from houston.

Im sitting here in Austin. Right this minute its raining. But I have even rode in the rain and the rain was warm and this was only about a week ago. However it gets kinda cool when the sun goes down. Definately need leathers and chaps. Did a small 200 mile circuit the other day that was just friggin awesome. I have been coming to Austin to work for 13 years and before that lived less than a 100 miles away. But really had no riding experience here. Now I cant get enough of it. I did do the Big Bend thing and its great! I personally didnt like the El Paso area but that may be because I lived there. If you have time in the summer the Texas panhandle, all though, flat is an interesting ride especially in the Dalhart, Dumas area. But I still think the Central Texas area has got to be the best ride.
