With a Wiseco 1200 conversion w/ stock 883 heads, do any adjustments need to be made to the timing? Would a 1200 ignition module work better than the stock 883 one? I'm on a strict budget and am looking for the best bang for the buck.

Sammy, there's a lot of folks in yer boat and it's kewl. To the best of my knowledge, if yer not getting into the cams, leave the timing stock.

The 883 module has a slightly steeper advance curve which works fine BUT each motor is slightly different and you should adjust yours to suit if needed..

I just did one last week and the right spot was exactly where it was at 883....sometimes ya lucky...

When ya got it together drop back in and I'll take ya thru how to fine tune it....it'll be close enuff for starters...we may just need to move it around a touch

I'm very curious about this topic. My friend did the conversion on his '00 XLH. Wiseco 9.5:1, stock 883 heads, stock cams, stock 883 ignition. He said when the bike gets hot it tends to ping when he's twisting the trottle and reving at high RPMS during accelerations. I guess timing would require an adjustment or it might be something else ?

not unusual.... often you have to reduce the timing a touch....not always but often..

Remove the pop rivets in the timing cover with a 5/32" drill bit

unscrew the 2 screws off the inside cover and remove it and the gasket

mark the timing plate and the housing so ya know where ya started

Undo the 2 towers with a large flat blade screwdriver

turn the plate anti-clockwise a couple of degrees or so

Tighten the 2 towers

Put the gasket and the inner cover back on.

tighten the 2 screws

go and test........if ya happy ya got it then use 2 SEALED pop rivets to put the outer cover back on...

for most people y put advance in untill it "pings" and then come back a few degrees untill it doesn't..
You'll find a point where there is too much advance BUT it doesn't ping....it just feels rough and will vibrate more than it should...take a touch more out..

I have screws in mine so I can change it if I get bad fuel.....11.25:1 doesn't give much freedom

I had a bit of pinging as well. Backing off the timing about 2 degrees seemed to get rid of most of it but I still ocasionally get a ping or two on a good hot day. I don't usually get on it too hard though.

if it's that close ya may wanna take a touch more out.....see if it smooths the vibes out too.

hehe.. time to complicate this.

I am converting my bike over to a single fire system with using the v-thunder programmable ignition system and a crane single fire coil. Any suggestions on this? It's the software based one also.

the software is handy for fine tuning.......

Keep the VOES as it gives you an extra curve and you can adjust the VOES for extra fine tunin too...

Glad you said that.. I almost threw that away! :yikes Thought it was emissions crap. :frownone All the VOES does is tell the module how much vacuum is being created in the intake correct? what else does this sensor do?

it shifts between 2 curves.........VERY handy......it works as a vacuum retard by bringing the retarded curve in under high vacuum conditions such as full throttle at low speed.

the new MAP sensor ignitions have 8 curves....REALLY handy :D and FUN to program......sorta leaves the backyarders in the boonies ;)

I take it that the new Sporties have a map sensor now? Sounds like they are on their way to being fuel injected!
