View Full Version : Detachable Solo Rack With Sissy Bar - Pics

Since I had nothing better to do (don't ask my wife) while the paint was drying on the battery tray (http://www.xlforum.net/vbportal/forums/showthread.php?t=27821), I decided to get started on another project that I've been putting off since fall...

With the sparto tail light I installed last summer, my detachable luggage rack wouldn't fit. The bar on the back of the luggage rack hit the top of the light. So I needed to cut a piece out and patch it up. Last fall someone posted a picture of their new sissy bar an I decided that I'd tack a sissy bar onto the luggage rack.

So far it's coming out better than I could have hoped for it to work. I need to attach the two center bars to the outer bars using some of the bent tubing that I cut off the back. Then comes that hard part getting the chrome off all the old bits so I can paint the new contraption.

Of course I also need to find a baby head to stick on it :D

Nope got sidetracked this weekend. Still needs one more little bendy piece welded in and then painting.

I finally finished welding the middle brackets, painted it wrinkle black and took her for her maiden voyage tonight. This pic loses some of the detail against the black fender, but I'll take another pic in a few weeks when I get that painted to match the tank.

I also came up with a neat way to lock the detachable latches, so that the casual passerby can't easily walk off with the rack sissy bar. I'll post some close up shots of that in the near future too.

I just need a baby head now ;)

Oops I just realized that this pic has some of the rack portion visible...
(nothing like cross posting the same pictures to a dozen different threads)

Looks good! If I remember correctly, your bike was the blue/white paint scheme originally, right?
Question about your front tire....hard to tell from the pics, but is it a bigger size than stock? If so, what size is it?

Gary

The front tire is the same size as a stock 19" as far as the numbers go. The Avon Venoms are a bit pudgier than stock, but not significantly different.

Since you have a custom I imagine you ave the 21" rim? Those tires are narrower then the 19" tires on the non XLC sportsters.

Thanks
Yeah, I've got the 21" front. I took my front fender off and have been thinking of going w/ a wider front tire/wheel but keeping it at 21".
Oh, and I saw your signature after I posted my question about the previous colors of your bike....my bad.

Scoots looking great. I like it. Hey is that back tire looking a little worn?Yea, I actually get it put together and out of the barn every once and a while... didn't think it was enough to do that though. It'll be time for the yearly change though soon. I might need a front this year too, last year I got away with just changing the rear :D

Well I gave a guy with a Kawi that I passed on the side of the road with no gas in his tank a ride on my solo rack / sissy bar combo last night. I only took him about 3 miles to get him home. I half expected it to be bent to hell when he got off, but it appears to have survived. I haven't taken it off yet, it might go "sprong" and never fit on again, but WTF I couldn't just ride past the guy and make him walk.

Did you let him know he was part of your R&D department before he got on? :laugh

Dammit gazza, I go from stock to bobbed and start heading to the "black" nether regions of bikedom like so many before me, and you go and paint yours creme and red. Looks f'n great. Love the scallops.

Did you let him know he was part of your R&D department before he got on? :laughHell no... I know first hand what engineers charge for their time.
That three mile ride would've cost me about $100.
