View Full Version : whats the cost of a used Buell Blast?
awaken96 10th May 2006, 13:57 Im shopping for a Blast for my son, im looking @ 03 and up, the local HD dealer has a new 04 but he still wants 4795.00 for it, a bit steep i think! on e-bay the prices seem all over the place. and count in shipping and its almost the cost of a new one. thanx
Captain 10th May 2006, 14:50 I actually bought my son's Blast on Ebay. I passed up two low mileage, blue 05's which were reasonably close to me for a black 05. The two blue ones did not sell; the owners' reserve price was higher than the last bids. One stated his starting price at 3500, which I take was his reserve. Final bids for those motorcycles were only in the 2900-3000 range.
The Blast I bought originally had a reserve of 3800. I was willing to bid up to Kelly bluebook for a black one with only 135 miles on it that was only an hour away. I did so, and still didn't break his reserve price. I emailed the owner and informed him that no one is willing to pay much over 3000 for a Buell Blast as evidenced by the last couple of auctions and if he wanted to sell, he'd have to lower his reserve.
He came back that he'd settle for 3500, so I upped my bid by another 35 dollars and now I have a Buell Blast for my son.
I was entertaining the idea of buying one of three bikes when I got the black 05. I think you can get a reasonable 03 Buell Blast on Ebay in the 2500 dollar price range. There was a red 03 Blast in Connecticut that had the modifications I liked which lowered his reserve to around 2000 in order to effect a sale. I think it finally sold for around 2300.
I'd keep an eye on the auctions, and bid on what you like, something will come up. Do email the seller. One seller provided his phone number. In less than a minute over the phone, I found out what his reserve price was and it was a reasonable figure corresponding to the Kelly Bluebook. It was my backup choice because it was in Michigan (400 miles away). After riding my sons' Blast, I would not want to ride a Blast that far to get it home. Still, considering shipping, I think you can find an 04 Blast for a lot less money than what your dealer is offering.
JohnnyV 10th May 2006, 15:01 I sold my wife's '01 with 1385 miles on it for $2600.00 I had just put on a Vance & Hines pipe and rejetted it too.
JohnT 10th May 2006, 15:03 Don't know if you've checked there, but Cycle Trader has a bunch of them, all over the country. Maybe there's one close to you that you could drive an pick up. As to price, they are holding their value surprisingly well. Even in my small town, I've been offered more than I paid for my wife's '05 (got it at a close out price when my local H-D dealer stopped carrying Buells).
Frankly, I think many H-D dealers missed the boat when they stopped carrying Buells. No, they didn't fit into the usual Harley mold and required a different sales approach, but they are solid machines, fun to ride, get great gas mileage, are excellent for new riders and, like all Harley's, you can hot rod them up and make them into what you want them to be. Maybe the dealers willl have another look at the way the Buells are holding their value, the demand for the Blast, and now the Uly, and have another go. In the meantime, good luck with your search.
NRHS Sales 10th May 2006, 15:28 Why are you needing an 03 and up? They are all the same no matter what year. No changes have been made to them. I would focus on mileage and price not year. You can find a good low mileage one for under $2000 if you shop around
Captain 10th May 2006, 16:07 NRHS,
From what I read on them in researching them, mostly from this website too by the way, I thought there were little improvements made along the way.
It was my impression that guys had an easier time with the Blasts made in 03 and after as some of the bugs had been worked out of them.
Every motorcycle has a learning curve to its development. I know, I bought the first year Softail. I later found that I had a very unique transmission that was only used for three months in '84. In '85, Harley stopped the production to introduce a whole new system to bolt the heads and jugs to the cases as well after the S&S fellows couldn't keep the head gaskets from blowing when they hopped the first Evo motors up. Then in '86, they changed the whole swingarm and frame to put the belt in.
When I bought my RoadKing, I waited three years on that model, and only bought the second year on the new Twin Cam 88. By then they had figured out some of the problems they had on the '99 models' cam gear attachment and I avoided some of the earlier problems.
Now I have the first year Street Rod and I find there's a problem with how the triple trees are put together on the neck. I've already noticed the problem others have noted over on the V-Rod forum. I should have looked into buying it before I bought it, but like I said before, this was truly my first ever impulse purchase.
So while the bike hasn't changed, little things have like the air cleaner attachments. All in all, I think he'd be better off with an 03 or later. That is what I limited my choice in a Blast to when looking to buy.
mavinwy 10th May 2006, 19:30 My father and I both had 01's (He still does...even though I moved on to the sportster) and put many trouble free miles on them.
up to mid '01 year...they had a rocker box gasket that was prone to leaking (easy to change though..replacement gasket was metal instad and did not leak) and the really early ones had a recall on the rear belt drive sprocket.
AFAIK...everything 02 and later is the same. I saw an 02 here last week go for $2250 with 450 original miles on it.....
I would guess an 03 to go for at minimum $2700, but they are getting more pricey as gas prices go up....All bikes seem to be because the demand is rising :)

Tucson_Tim 15th May 2006, 04:16 See kbb.com (Kelly BlueBook) or use Price Checker on the Cycle Trader site.
NRHS Sales 15th May 2006, 04:30 There is no difference in either electrical systems or engines on 03s and newer vs. older. They are all the same.
