It was good. It was chilly up here in canada, but I had to do it. It was like riding my 74 inch ,but with the nitrous on all the time. The roads are a bit dusty and the street tire was new, so i didnt crack it wide open hard yet. The front end will come up and the rear will break free without pinning it!
Its perfect. the lightened pistons and rods and flywheels are pretty cool. The bike will hit 6000 rpm (the limiter is 7k but the shift lights at 6k cause i dont need to see 7k till its at the track.) very quickly. crack the throttle in 2-3rd gear and you have to watch for the shift light. the sound is good...a bit higher pitched than my 74 inch.
well it was the first ride and it ran...heres the parts....

awww shucks, hold on a minute. I got a strange kinda warmish feeling a little like heartburn...wonder what it is. Ohh...I remember what it is now....it's ENVY!

Man, I'm jealous. That's what I want Narley! I want wheelies out of my 1200 custom! I'm afraid to go 88" though. She's the only scoot I got and I'm afraid that might make her a bit much for street cruisin'. Sounds awesome and looks tough man...enjoy!

Narley, I like the seat because it looks like it is made to hold you on. Also looks really fast. When you gonna get some rearsets for that baby. How about the solid struts. Does that make the ride harsh. Last question, whats that item just above the voltage regulator.

I LOVE that exhaust!

Any dyno numbers would be great as well.

14th February 2005, 05:28
Thanks for comments about the exhaust cause its the icing on the cake. It may be hard to beleieve, but the builder has lots of good contacts. Its a custom built engraved rinehart 2-1 built for just that bike. Its got an etched autograph in it from rinehart of rinehart -bub.
rotten ralph , that thing is the brain for the airshifter...thats also why it doesnt really need rearsets...its a hand clutchless shifter....very cool ,very strong shifts. lets all take a moment and pray for my tranny!
Dyno info .....o.....okay twist my arm.
124 hp and 110 lbs! and that was at 50 miles. we expect with further breakin and tuning time it will be 130hp.

I don't want a so radical bike.
Where I live when we talk about motorcycling the difference is made by the man and a well tuned bike, neither the brute force of the horse power, nor the displacement.

What I dream is a Sportster nice like the stock one, with few body works.

Quality aftermarket and well tuned shocks and forks, with some registrations.
A strong engine that is able to deliver a good power and torque in all the band but expecially the mid-range.

So an Ikon, Bitubo or Progressive suspension with good front fork springs, with the right preload and a small frok sliding to make the bike a bit more handle in twisties.

A 1400cc mod, stock heads with a mid tuning for overall efficiency or stage 1/2 job.
A well tuned CV44 or HSR42 with high flow breather.
An exhaust tuned for the right flow and a bit of back pressure, to just don't loose too much low-mid end torque.
Ignition module.
Stock or a bit more aggressive cams.
Tuning of the final gear ratio.

I'll not show to anyone what is on my bike.
I'll have good power delivery for all around driveability.
And if my right hand will become nervous I'll be able to shock who was thinking it was just a stock bike...

Narley
15th February 2005, 17:48
Yes you will...good. In the mean time. I will keep eating retro styled Kawasakis....then they will wonder who I am. Who is that man...how well tuned can a Harley be?

The comments from the zrx 1200 poster seemd to dis the direction this build took. Well whatever, But I couldnt resist. of course I wanted to reply to the dis, but I had to chuckle. THE BEST EVER on the street experience I have had with my bikes was last summer with my nitrous bike. I pulled up on the left so the rider of the retro styled Kawi 1200 couldnt see the bottle...I egged him a bit and he bit. He pulled single file...and there was one vehcle ahead of us then a perfect two lane straightaway . That was the longest single pull on nitrous I have ever run. As he pulled out to pass the car and head back into our lane I geared down and hit the juice and was right on his butt. I hit 4th and was right beside him...I hit 5th juice back on and into a slight tuck and pulled him..... I let off afterwhat had to be 12-15 seconds on the juice.
Months later at a car show ,I was wearing my jacket and the guy recognized the back of it. He confronted me saying that his freind (who we left in the dust) couldnt believe a HARLEY HAD pulled him. I had no problem pulling away from him. That bike may have had gearing for higher top speed, but he didnt have the power to pull it quick enough to keep up at that speed. I wasnt just inching him, I pulled him by a few feet in a few seconds, and the gap increased. Anyways he was impressed. I loved that moment as that was one goal of the build . To own a sleeper. The fella ask how I did it,and I explained, the bike had nitrous and on a hot day with a warm full bottle the bike puts 120lbs of tq down and the same hp. My speedo tops at 220kmh but he had us at 240kmh. I was as proud of that bike as I am of this one. talk to me about your thoughts and designs......when its done...and its working great. Like mine does.

I'd like yours for draggin but mines gonna be a bit more street orientated.......

So I'm gonna use slightly smaller cams, N9's to start with and a milder build and with an air cleaner as it's gonna be my daily rider... :D and I wanta play in the twisties but I don't think it's ever gonna be quicker than my '03 gixxer tho :( (it's got 150 at the rear and weighs under 200kilos wet) but it'll be more fun.

Hey stevo, yeah i know that , and should have left it alone, could have left it alone cept for two things...firstly dont ever compare what someone has achieved by putting it in bad light in comparison to something you dont even HAVE YET!...and of course secondly cause the bike he has just happen to be the retro kawasaki involved in one of my most memorable street rides ever.
I know though that for sure he wants a machine for handling...few mods ,just a 1400 kit. OOO ps...sorry...leave it alone right. Its like listening to two kids argue.....my father can beat up your father....cept for one of us ...the dad is only a figment of our imagination while the others is real. oooooooo, I digress. Must be bored...it is winter here after all.
So stevo...hows the parts shopping coming...I get the feeling you are almost done...only thing left is to find the time right?
The twisties are great and I live only an hour from a top 10 rated ride in all north america. twisties are a real thrill on a harley....cause they are a greater challenge...however...although shorter the thrill of holding it straight for a quarter mile is still my greatest.
BTW that was my first time with an air shifter....damn that was good...such strong shifts ...the bike just surged ahead. cant wait to get it back out and pull a few full throttle shifts from 2-3 and third to fourth. Steep learning curve with the shifter and the bars. also got some av gas to mix with the torco concentrtate so I can advance the ign a bit.
every ride will be a lesson this year.

Yeah Narley....

I've pretty well got all the bits......now it's just about clearing the time :(

Which is harder than gettn the bits

Here's a list to this stage...

Millenium 88" barrells
Huricane 88" pistons and rings etc
heads will be varied as I have quite a few sets and this will be a development mule....
Heavy duty spring kit with titanium retainers
N9 cams for starters
S&S roller rockers
S&S rod kit.
Probably lightened flywheels.. I have a few sets here...
V-Thunder adjustable pushrods
S&S travel limiters
SE 7500 and 6800 ignition module (S model)
40cv for runnin in, then 42 Mikuni then maybe 44cv
Megacycle 2-1 for starters, then I'll make my own to suit
Dyna shift light

chassis
twin Brembo 4 spots
S model suspension
my own billet fork brace
Ohlins steering dampner
honda xl 250 oil cooler that wraps around the head tube
gonna cut the top out of a tank and put an aircraft filler in
probably a 520 chain drive conversion

that's about it off the top of my head....it will change depending on what I happen to have in stock at the time or feel like doin to it

I have a dyno sheet. I have highlighted the tq in green and the hp in blue. I had two sepertae dynos one was tq and one was hp. One was over rpm, the other mph. So i have overlayed them the best i can ,just pay careful attention to the different scales for rpm. they are in matching green for tq and blue marks for hp. So just look at tq with the green rpm marks at the top and hp with the bluemarks.

I'll be setting it up in the 11.5+ : 1 region

It will depend on what I calculate to be an ideal starting point...and then I'll see what it wants from there

I was running 11.25:1 at 1200 with SE 0.536" cams and the N9's have a later closing inlet so I can go a bit more static...maybe up to 12:1...
I still have to run on pump fuel tho...so I have to err a little on the safe side

I have a 20 litre drum of C16 race fuel with additives for starters....I normally run higher octane fuel initially and then drop the octane back to normal.....
I'll be mixing some of the C16 in with my normal fuel initially for a safety margin.

As I said it's gonna have a few different heads and combinations untill I'm happy with it.....and then I'll probably change stuff just see what has an effect on which area of power..

I want 10's in FULL street trim ie: ride down to Brisbane (1000 miles) and Sydney (1500 miles) and race and then ride back and run thru the twisties too :D all on pump fuel

Initially I'll settle for easy 11's but the goal is 10's consistent.

G'day it's hard to go out much on an iron head as there's even less room in the crankcase around the barrells...

Easiest way out on a Iron head is to stroke it....

I think the bottom line is the 124 H.P. on the bike. That has got to be fun to ride. I wish I had spent the money when my buddy told me to get the hot 89 kit back in 96. I am sure I would still be running that wonderful kit. Oh well a lesson learned that I can't afford to repeat. Wish I hap that extra 40+ h.p. gives me chills thinking about it.

Narley, my man, that bike sounds sick! You're gonna have alot of fun with that one. I was out at the amteur 1/8 mi races the other night and I was thinking there was a definite lack of Harley muscle out there. I was gonna go home and get my sporty for a laugh but I didn't want to have to line up next to one of those Haybusas and get smoked. I would've lined up with most of the cars though. :-) Can you believe I've put about 1,800 miles on my bike since I bought it in October and no one has even tried to race me yet? They must think its faster than it is!

Narley
21st February 2005, 17:28
yep, they think its fast...its black and black is the fastest!
Took the bike out again this sat and sunday. It was about 0c or 32f. but it was sunny and clear. ran some c12 race gas and advanced the timing to the # 6 position. Felt quicker off the line...still cant just give it a full twist in 1st 2nd or 3rd yet. Up to maybe a half twist....1/4 twists on this thing are scary.
Serious thoughts about" I will never be able to floor this thing" had a nice lfoting ofthe front end and floated it for a while. practicing bringing it down with a little rear brake rather than chopping the throttle.

SoCal-Cruisin

Bloody spine.
Went out for a short ride sunday. Guessing the new seasons rides were squishing the discs in my lower back and they were swelling. All it took sunday was throwin a leg over afetr lunch. felt the twinge...felt it before...slipped disc or herniated....doesnt hurt right away...the injury swells and the nearby muscles tighten up then it frezzes ya in the position your in. usually the fetal one by then.
Been in bad since sunday. all I can do is lay on my back or right side...for two days now...and the same tommorow. reasonably comfortable till you move too much.
Irony of it. Dug out and measured for the rear shocks to replace the struts...but didnt have time to install them.
btw any one know the travel on stock 13.5 inch rear shocks?
