Just wanted to say thanks in advance for any help from you guys.

About 2 months ago I picked up my first Buell. An '01 X1 w/ 2800 original miles on it. I love this bike and it has been great, until last week.

I rode it pretty good on Thursday, then went to go for a ride on Friday. I waited for the FI light to go out, and hit the button. Normally within a crank or 2, it is purring like a kitten, but it didnt catch this time. So I hit the button again, nothing. And again. nothing. I now I shouldnt have tried to throttle it, at this point but was supposed to be meeting some friends for a ride. So i kept trying to start it. Using the throttle, at this point. Then i tried to push it down my driveway. Nothing.

I guess I must have flooded the engine, but you would think after a couple hours it would start. But no. If i crack it for 5 to 10 seconds it catches once then dies.

I am new tho the whole Fuel Injection thing, so I dont know where to begin. I removed the side covers, checked the plugs, they were a little dirty so I cleaned them, and put them back in. Still nothing.

At this point I am wondering if I could have blown one of the all important sensors that are needed for this system to work. But again, I dont know where to begin. I have a buddy that is a Harley machanic, but since this is Sturgis Week, he is absolutely swamped.

Any help on where to start would be great.

Thanks.

Dave

I filled the tank on thursday, and drove a whopping 7 miles home. Yeah, I am pretty sure there is fuel in the tank.

Thanks though.

Can you hear the fuel pump running?

Have you checked your fuses?

Can you hear the fuel pump running?

Have you checked your fuses?

When you turn it on, you can hear the FI cycle and pressurize. I looked at it a bit last night, removed the fuel filter, cleaned it out and put it back on, and then put new plugs in to make sure I was getting a good spark. I am pretty sure its not starting due to not getting fuel.

I was thinking I burned out a sensor or something, but now I am thinking the fuel pump may be shwapped. I am hoping to actually tear into it today.

I would have gotten more checked yesterday, but my 16 y/o son rolled his truck due to an idiot on the highway.

MAN! I wish this would have happened 2 months later when my riding season was over.

Hi, this thread might possibly be of help to you if it has anything to do with the fuel pump/filter.

I was not able to activate Kazoom's link above so I may be duplicating the same information .

Confirm the ECM fuse is good and functioning first and that the fuel pump does reach full pressure and click off right away after the key is turned ON.

I would separate the two issues of spark and fuel by removing the Spark Plug lead(s) with a metal probe on an insulated handle ( i.e. star type screw driver) placed into the end of each lead make sure there is a strong purple spark to ground point 1/2 -1" long.

If there is no spark then there is no trigger set for the injectors to fire from either.

This usually points to the Crankshaft Position Sensor ( CKS ) located at the front lower left portion of the crankcases. It will have three wires attached to it and held in by one bolt. There is a test for it using the AC output voltage generated when cranking with the plugs out but it is often simpler to replace it with the latest -C version of the OEM part number.

You can confirm the rest of the ignition's performance by using a jumper wire to ground the non powered ( i.e. no +12 dc ) side of the coil by touching it to the engine and releasing it. This will cause thespark to jump accross from your probe to ground.

The key and the run switch must both be in the ON position for this test to work.

If you can narrow it down to one system it will help to identify the root cause for you.

Let us know what happens as you continue probing for answers.

Cheers;
