Gone 18th May 2006, 15:43 thats why geezer glides were invented, Listen to the potato song, that is all you should need. indyrednek 18th May 2006, 15:50 there are a few companies that have bike radios. As far as 12 volt source you will have to tap into the accessory parts of the electrical system. Check your service manual for that. cadiero 18th May 2006, 15:54 I use a small MP3 player, it's a Nomad by Nuvo I think. It has an FM radio and can hold 512 mb of music. I use this with ear buds actually. the ear buds are like ear plugs in my ears and cut out outside sound. Really works great for me. I don't ride over 50 Miles without it. ken01976 18th May 2006, 15:56 I saw a radioshack am/fm/weatherband for 25 bucks. Really small and takes two tripple a batteries. Get a ear phone extension for 6 bucks and run it under the tank and pop it out in front of the seat held on by black wire ties to the rail. You can mount the radio up front with velcro on the bar, under the speedo or whatever. I've seen it used on yamaha vstar 650's a lot on the delphi forum "650ccandd". Really incospicous, plus you can unvelcro it, unplug the extension, and stick it in your pocket. Best of both worlds. lagerdrinker 18th May 2006, 20:35 please do not mount a radio to your sportster's handlebars. the thought of that makes me feel like im riding a old mans bike. xllent01 18th May 2006, 20:42 Whats next? floorboards, hard bags, lexan, wind deflectors, WTF it's a sportster, not a garbage barge.:banadanc Hope your not offended, just got back from MB rally and to see all these buffoons with every bell and whistle makes me laugh:roflblack What happened to the days of just the wind in your face? snowman 18th May 2006, 21:01 Whats next? floorboards, hard bags, lexan, wind deflectors, WTF it's a sportster, not a garbage barge.:banadanc Hope your not offended, just got back from MB rally and to see all these buffoons with every bell and whistle makes me laugh:roflblack What happened to the days of just the wind in your face? We install louder pipes hoping that they will hear us for some sort of protection. Now put a radio on your scoot so you can't hear your bike or whats going on around you, what next air conditioning so you won't get hot That would be one amazing radio to drown out the bike. With ear buds I can actually hear better. They cut wind noise just like ear plugs so you hear the important stuff like horns and sirens. I can actually hear my buddies bike click into gear coming to a stop light. I ride everyday to work and need the radio to keep my temper in disorganized traffic. Back to the original question, I am planning to wire in a cigarette adapter too and was wondering where to hide it. Any clever ideas or maybe just some more opinions? xllent01 18th May 2006, 22:40 Bad enough we have to deal with distracted soccer mom a-holes dropping the cell phone, playing the dvd player, reading a f##ckin book while driving (actually saw a lady doing that) and running us over in the left turning lanes and now we have sporty riders distracted with XM and ipods stuck in there ears, it just spells accident waiting to happen. In case anyone forgot, there was a valid question in the beginning of this post. evalea 18th May 2006, 22:52 Phew, what a furore, over a radio, personally I listen to my ipod (which has a radio option available now) on long trips, because if I don't the drone of my pipes sends me to sleep, which I kind of figure might be a tad more dangerous. But hey, each to their own. A friend of mine has a cigarette lighter (thats made for bikes, from JP cycles) attached to the risers of her handlebars - although she is on a road king. A friend of hers fabbed a bracket and attached it to the bolts from her handlebar clamp. It justs runs down the side of the riser/clamp. Its quite a neat installation. She smokes which is why she had hers installed. There are also a couple of companies out there with handlebar mounted speaker systems, like J&M. A friend of mine has such a system on her road star, but other than seeing it, I don't know much more about it. There is a website - I think http://www.cyclegadgets.com/ that sells mounts for XM, and other stuff, maybe even the speakers. xena 18th May 2006, 23:02 In case anyone forgot, there was a valid question in the beginning of this post. You can buy an XM radio and mount it to your handle bars. My gurl bought me one of the portable types. I almost never use it, but when I do I keep it in a bag tied to the bars. Very simple and easy to carry in with you. Tank bags are an option too. I used one for the PGR meet and greet and it scratched my paint...so it has been retired! The forums are full of ways to tap into your 12v system. Cycle Gadgets (i think) sells mounts and 12v plugs for you scoot. Adios CapMorganXL 19th May 2006, 00:21 LOL... My way is the best, the rest are baaaaaad!... Hmmm.. sorta rhymes with "waaaaaaah". Besides, rather than being extremely narrow minded, exclusionary, and dare I say it... prejudiced and judgemental... this type of statement ignores how to do it the REAL best way, which is either 1) What YOU like, regardless of what someone else spews, or 2) MY way. I use detachable "almost everything". When I want the "I must be a REAL biker 'cause I ain't got no windshield" kind of ride, I pop off almost everything (bike parts people,... bike parts) including the round cover on my Big Sucker, and I have a low and mean street fighter Sporty. When I'm more in the "That's too damn many miles to go without some comfort" mode, I put all the stuff back on, including my XM receiver with in the ear earbuds. My cig lighter is mounted on the quick detach windshield, so it's not a permanent fixture. Wiring is detached with a pigtail like a battery tender. With the ear buds, I can hear MUCH better than without, regardless of if the shield is on or not. I can listen at low volume, lose the valve train noise and focus on the sweet rumble of my SE IIs, still hear traffic, unusual mechanical sounds, sirens, etc., hear the other bikes around me rumblin', and still listen to my favorite rock or comedy/talk programming. The miles definitely melt away easier. The entire XM setup mounts to the windshield as well, thus completing the detachable Jekyll and Hyde setup, or I can slip the XM in my pocket and still look like Iwanna B. Biker and enjoy the tunes at the same time. The XM mount is simply a flat piece of aluminum stock, bent to fit, and mounted to the center windshield screw. Thousands of miles, and no problem yet. I even wired a headphone extension cable from the riser (under the toolbag), down through the harness, and I have 2 plugs, one at the front of the seat for me, and one at the back of my seat for the wife to plug in to. We jump on the bike, plug in, hit the road rockin', and have a blast, with no funky headphone cords flappin' between us and the handlebars, etc. My only advice against a radio would be to avoid FM and spend for satellite radio if you can, as you'll spend less time fiddling with it trying to find another station as the current one fades. You can listen to the same channel non-stop, nationwide if ya want. In fact, I'm awaiting shipment of my new XM receiver, that also is an MP3 player and can record up to 50 hours of broadcast, and I can pop it off the bike and into a pocket and listen anywhere I go. See my gallery, linked below, for pics of the "many faces of Jekyll & Hyde". So THERE! :gun Vegas1200C 19th May 2006, 00:58 Nice setup Capmorgan. Look like you're covered for everything. Great idea for the detachable plug too. Spirit 19th May 2006, 00:59 Who could ever refer to any Harley Davidson,or someone elses ride as being a Garbage Barge? I to have sporty bags, shield, bar, backrest Who really has time to give a shit! As long as you enjoy YOUR ride. L.B. 19th May 2006, 01:33 CaptainMorganXL, what kind of earbuds are you using? I have tried several different ones but I haven't found any that are real comfortable. I'm using the Shure earbuds now; they are the best so far, but still bother me after a while. Been thinking about trying helmet speakers. I don't listen to music all the time, but it sure helps when cranking out miles on the freeway. Skysailor 19th May 2006, 03:28 Thanks guys...sounds like I'm going the ear buds and MP3 player in my pocket! Cheap...and simple. And, only for 200+ mile rides. Vegas1200C 19th May 2006, 03:34 I use Sony Ear Buds. They come with 3 different size buds and sound great. If find the comfortable but I think it depends on your ear shape. CT1200 19th May 2006, 03:52 If your still looking for a good cheap 12v plug, try wal-mart auto dept. If you've got a battery tender pig tail on your battery it will hook right up. Two pin trailer wire. I use it to charge that nasty cell to keep in touch with friends and fam, or run the compressor to fill up that tire, dear spot light, whatever. It goes with me on any weekend trip. Can't get away from that discusting electric beast. I think it was under $2. And yes I do actually have an Ipod also. Just couldn't get comfortable with it though. I just rehurse for american idol as I'm rolling my way to work in the morning. I don't even need to watch the karaoke screen any more at the bar. Now if I could find a way to hook that usb cable into my head to dl a book I might get a little smarter. :tour CapMorganXL 19th May 2006, 04:28 I run the Sony buds also. I've tried the following in-the-ear buds; 1. Koss, with foam earpieces: $20 at Radio Shack and elsewhere. 3 different shape foam inserts, similar to the disposable foam earplugs for shooting, etc. Pretty good sound, but the ones with the built in mute button broke after about 2 months. The ones without the switch held up well. 2. Maxell digital earbuds: $29- wider listed frequency range, so should have had better sound, but sounded like absolute crap... like am radio from a beer can. 3. Sony: $49- small, lightweight, 3 sizes of very soft and comfortable ear bud covers. Included extension cord- the short cord is good for use when radio is in pocket, add the extension and there is plenty to hook up to seat plug or handlebar, etc. The Sonys have the cord come down one side, i.e: one ear cord is shorter, so the main cord hangs to the side instead of down the center. Available in black or white. Awesome sound, much deeper bass than the others. I've worn these for a 400 mile day and could have worn them on into the night. They seal well enough to provide good protection against wind noise, but don't interfere with hearing nearly as much as foam earplugs I used to use. I wear them whether wearing my half helmet or my full face. Highly recommended. My cig plug is a weather proof one from discount auto parts house... I think under $15. When the plug is out, a spring loaded cap closes to seal it. I'm gonna eventually replace it with nice chrome billet piece, but other items still have higher priority. Thanks for the kudos Vegas. :D atkrwc 19th May 2006, 04:32 I really like my Shure e2c buds. They list for $99 but you can find them on eBay for $59. They have 4 different size foamies to fit your ears. Been using them for about 2 years. Sound quality is great. CT1200 19th May 2006, 04:38 Ya I'll vote for the Sony buds too. Sony makes some great headphones but I'd stay away from any of there speakers. There better then they usted to be but still not great. snowman 23rd May 2006, 14:36 Found this for a real nice power outlet: :smoke http://www.powerlet.net/products.php?mid=1 SkippyRay 23rd May 2006, 15:03 I have earbuds for my XM specifically so I can drown out everyone elses honest opinions. :roflblack :banana :p :wonderlan Good comeback!!! Funny:clap tlgibson97 23rd May 2006, 15:21 I wired a cig adapter to the battery to plug in my GPS. I ran the GPS wire from the handlebars back under the seat. The adaper and evrything tucks right under the seat. I just have it wired to the battery although I know I should have a fuse in there but I dont. If I had anything else that required power I just remove the seat and plug it in. Dragonsoni 16th June 2006, 23:07 J&P's Catalog has a music system that looks like chrome bullet style turnsignals but pointed back at the rider which are mounted to the handle bars. Also, anybody have a power (12volt DC) outlet? I'd plug in my sat radio....got to be something out there for non "geezer glides"? Riding any long distance in rush-hour traffic here in So-CAL means that you've got to stay in touch with freeway updates provided on our local radio stations. If there's a hassle, we have many alternate routes that the CHP and Cal-Trans advise us to take. Like you, I was thinking about some kind of onboard power hookup for a small radio but then I went ahead an bought a AA-battery powered unit. It's a standard data stick for any work-related items but it's also an .mp3 player with an FM radio. I put the data stick in my inside jacket pocket and use just one ear-bug to listen to the radio reports. I don't use it all the time, just when commuting in heavy traffic conditions or if there seems to be some serious problems with the freeways. I'm aware that hearing the traffic around me is an important part of staying safe, but when it warrants it, avoiding major congestion is another way to remain safe on commute runs. - - - Ride safe... With fists in the wind.... :tour J.W. Pulchritude 26th June 2006, 16:20 I too am interested in a radio/music option for my Sporty. I have been leaning torwards an iPod, especially since there is now an FM option on them, and a pair of Shure earphones/earplugs. There are times when I am out on my bike and like to hear the rush of the wind around me, yet there are times on those longer trips when I feel like a little smooth jazz would be appropriate. I plan on at least trying out the iPod route and will probably borrow a friends prior to making a purchase. I want to make sure that I can hear the music above the road/engine noise and that I can also hear sirens and horns. To me, I ought to be able to listen to my own choice of music rather than that loud, pumping bass in the pimp mobile that pulls up along side of me! :-) cantolina 26th June 2006, 16:48 Everything I've seen that would work is 500. +... I ain't spendin THAT kinda scratch for speakers on my Sporty, but I'm always lookin! ;) Carl-04XL 26th June 2006, 17:08 I use an mp3/FM player from Sandisk. I got some 'better' earbuds from Radio Shack, but the cable insulation has frayed some on one 'bud'. Well, this weekend at the Va HOG State Ralley, one of the vendors was making molds for custom earplugs/earphones. I got both, although I'll have to wait for the earphones. It seems that the company is in Colorado and that's where they make up the earphones. They got a 40 - 16k hz freq response and 114db sensitivity, plus a year warrantee. Bad part is they were $300. Good part is I got the earplugs discounted because I got both. Anyway, I need to use plugs/phones to keep the tinitis from 'exploding' when I get off the bike. Wind noise is the worse and triggers the tinitis the most. I have found that I can hear tire noise of cars/trucks when they are within 30 feet or so. I figure if I can here that, then I can hear whatever needs to be heard, even when using the earbuds (as long as I don't 'crank it up'). As for hearing different types of music, mp3 players are so cheap that you can get several and load each with different styles of music and change out when you get tired of one style or the other. Or just go with the XM/SIRIUS portables and change channels (safely). chrishajer 26th June 2006, 17:24 I installed a set of those bullet style ones (from 2 Wheel Tunes (http://www.2wheeltunes.com/)) on a Heritage with SE II mufflers and 1550 kit. They were very nice units. He supplied a harness to plug into the wiring harness on the bike: no need for an auxiliary 12V power supply. He actually uses HD turn signal shells and mounts the speakers in them. You need to find a place for the amp (top engine guard mounting hole worked on this Heritage.) The clutch perch needed to be modified slightly to work (i.e. the mirror stem is not long enough to go through the perch and the new speaker bracket AND still have enough thread to tighten the nut.) I countersunk the top of the perch to allow the mirror to set into it further, exposing more threads. Not noticeable at all. Very clean. The brackets supplied were polished stainless steel. These speakers are a million times cleaner looking than the J&M ones once mounted. The owner of the bike used her iPod shuffle (any of the hard drive based MP3 player will skip on a HD) and it sounded fine above the wind, exhaust and engine noise. This unit has a 3.5 mm jack to accept input from anything like an iPod, XM, Sirius or other portable MP3 player. Be aware that in some states, headphones or earbuds may be illegal while riding a motorcycle. --Chris jwbradbury 26th June 2006, 21:59 Noticed this thread is still alive and kicking.... If anyone plans to use the ear-bugs for listening to an FM radio unit, make sure to check with your state's Department of Motor Vehicle regulations regarding the issue. As I posted in other threads, riders here on the Left Coast (in Calif.) can only use one ear-bug to stay legal, so a nice "stereo" sound won't be part of the picture. I have the dual set on my .mp3/FM Sandisk model but I only use one side for the traffic updates. Of course, if you went with something like the BT's use, you could have small stereo speakers mounted somewhere. I saw a few sets of those on XL's during the West Coast Thunder ride at Memorial Day. They were very small speakers just behind a windshield and clamped to the handlebars. Again, check with your state's regs to make sure you do things legally, otherwise your "friendly biker with a badge" may want to have a roadside chat with you. - - - Ride safe... With fists in the wind.... :tour J.W. Paulie420 27th June 2006, 04:09 Something I just learned about... the chatterbox, which is a helmet to helmet intercom system... works GREAT and you can plug mp3, phone, anything into it and listen away in the helmet... I have though about putting sound on the bike but didn't want to deal with wires. I didn't want to feel like I was connected to the bike by a wire. I thought about just getting an ipod and wearing it in my jacket. I usually wear earplugs so I figure the ear buds would just replace them. He even has the same xm tuner that is in that picture. Only difference with his is he has the xm on the left handle bar with that control module mounted above it and the xm antenna mounted ontop of that. http://www.motorcyclespeakers.net/ The speakers are pretty loud. When we are at a light I can hear the speakers ok next to him on my bike. He has a windshield which I think makes it a lot easier for him to hear them. They even make Ipod mounts. bsczar1 18th July 2006, 16:23 I have the 2 Wheel Tunes on my Sportster. They sound pretty good, but above 70-80 MPH they get a little hard to hear, even with a windshield. I have 16" apes, which puts them up closer to ear level, and I used the stock turn signal swivels to direct them towrds me. You will need to move the turn signals down to the forks. They are only 2" speakers at 50 watts per channel, so they don't have a whole lot of bass, but they do work. They are realy good for 60 MPH or less, and get ify above that in in high winds. I paid $400 off ebay for it shipped to my door through Kustom Emporium. Also, I had a few operator error problems, and I have to say their customer service is out of this world. They do not like emails, they prefer to talk to you on the phone and explain it to you. All in all I feel it was worth it. I may look into getting speakers that will provide a little more sound at speed, but these are sufficient for now. For picstures see user BSCZAR1 in the boutique at sportster.org Gone 19th July 2006, 01:16 I got a pair of 4" JVC speakers with 1" chrome mounts and a 100W amp from MotorcycleTunes.com for under $200! 66impala 23rd July 2006, 01:22 I just made up a bracket to hold my mp3 player (zen micro). I dont want to listen to music all the time, but on the last three 700 mile trips it would of been nice. Around the neighborhood, its not worth the effort. http://xlforum.net/photopost/watermark.php?file=11854&size=1 Matt 23rd July 2006, 02:14 The AM radio on my XLCH really sucks because the magneto makes static and the vacuum tubes take too long to warm up when the engine's not running. LOL Matt 01Sporty 11th August 2006, 03:36 I started working on a way to get XM on the Sporty. Then decided to make sure I could even hear a radio first. I bought a $6.00 FM portable radio (2"x4"x3/4" thick) and I actually ty-wrapped it to the handlebars. I gotta say, I love having the music along... Especially at red lights, when I can hear it. :tour All kidding aside, I'll be adding XM to it now. Gotta have my 60's on 6. Regards, PPPC #350 :roflblack Anyone else here? Navigator 11th August 2006, 09:40 Get a Pioneer XM radio & clip it to your belt- that & a set of Sure earbuds work real fime for the long Highway rides. jwbradbury 11th August 2006, 17:27 I started working on a way to get XM on the Sporty. This particular link shows it on a Softail handlebar but I've seen it on others too. Here's the link: http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/gma_product.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=84552444876973 7&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=1408474395442411&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=1408474395442411&bmUID=1155313034581&bmLocale=en_US J.W. 01Sporty 11th August 2006, 20:03 Yo Dude... Huh?? :laugh That radio has to have a standard FM radio to re-broadcast the XM signal to. The XM unit I'm looking at is adaptable to a small set of amplified speakers. Without having to re-engineer it. Regards, 01 sprtrjl 11th August 2006, 20:20 NOT ONLY NO - BUT H3LL NO! Who needs the distraction from that sweet song my 1200 is singing thru those long tubes. Kentucky 12th August 2006, 01:32 NOT ONLY NO - BUT H3LL NO! Who needs the distraction from that sweet song my 1200 is singing thru those long tubes. Plus one to that. I tried it once on the Sporty and again with the ear plugs under my ff helmet on my crotch rocket and in both cases it drove me nuts. I've seen a number of cruiser riders that use some sort of sound/music system but the only sound I want to hear is that sweet sound of a well tuned stage 1 1200 Sporty or the rush of 14,000 rpm with my crotch rocket. Anything else just don't seem right......... wandrur 1st January 2007, 20:58 Ya I'll vote for the Sony buds too. Sony makes some great headphones but I'd stay away from any of there speakers. There better then they usted to be but still not great. The Sony ear buds are my favorite mobile headphones ever. I use the model MDR-E021 style. I've found them online and at Circuit City. Bite Me 2nd January 2007, 13:18 It is against the law in a lot of states to have ear phones... kiltbill 2nd January 2007, 13:54 Riding any long distance in rush-hour traffic here in So-CAL means that you've got to stay in touch with freeway updates provided on our local radio stations. I do miss him and his posts, a true Gentleman he symbolised what this place was about in so many ways for me. I cannot remember him ever uttering a harsh word, and he always tried so hard to help anyone who needed it. Little_Dave 9th February 2007, 19:01 Get yourself an old cigarette lighter from an old car, wire it through an inline fuse to the battery, use it to plug in your mobile charger. I also wired in a battery monitor for when the bike is off the road,I can run a set of heated bar wraps off that. I use an mp3 player that has an fm radio on it. Like the other guys, the earphones fit inside my helmet. The car charging plug fits the cigarette lighter to charge it up when away. It's simple to fix up and works a treat.:tour :banana Delzore 9th February 2007, 20:04 I just picked up an ipod. Go to apple.com search on refurbished ipods. You can get a great deal and still keep the 1 year warranty. I picked up 2 of the 30GB Video ipods for 180 each (normal prices is 250). Its great. I also got the in helmet speakers. I got them at www.helmetaudio.com (specifically Helmet speakers with volume control (http://helmetaudio.com/khxc/index.php?app=ccp0&ns=prodshow&ref=HS92&sid=umo2t72608z509q9wz60sk2o748bg800)) Speakers are working pretty good, I just need them to be able to go a little bit louder, so may need to buy an inline amplifier. But these helmet speakers are nice, as you don't have a speaker shoved in your ear. h2oPumper 15th April 2007, 19:31 I managed to get a Roady 2 mounted decently on my wife's XL. Her thanks was well worth the effort for you radio nay-sayers. robert 15th April 2007, 19:40 Try these guys: www.2wheeltunes.com They make a setup for Sportys. They sell complete systems, or just mounts to hold a media player. Little_Dave 22nd April 2007, 03:03 I just plug in my mp3 to a set of sony earplugs and away I go. I have a plug fitted to the battery where I can connect to an off bike charger, I also have taken a cigarette lighter off a car ( cost a £1) from a local scrap dealer and from that I can charge my mobile and run my sat nav (car type) that I modded so it would mount on the bike. The whole lot just unclips and either stows in the saddlebag or goes in my pocket. I took a piccy but I haven't yet uploaded onto my pc. When I do I'll put it on the forum.:) Maybe that would help.:D 1stGenRex 22nd April 2007, 03:08 thats why geezer glides were invented, Listen to the potato song, that is all you should need. I would have loved to have had a radio at one time. Going through Utah at 105 it was 115 degrees and I was sound asleep atop a R100RS Beemer. Woke up 6 ft. behind a semi who was really letting it roll (thank God). Sometimes a little music comes in very handy. Now sing after me .... Cumbyah my Lord, Cumbyah ....... |
