Hello all.
First post.
Brand new to the bike world and brand new Harley rider.
Though I was raised with Harleys, it was only last week (age 46) I bought a 2006 XL 1200 C. LOVE the bike! My first. Man, I've been missing out! Too bad my dad (Randy) passed away a couple years ago, he would have been thrilled. I sure miss him.
I've been gathering info from you all for my EPA rollback/upgrade when I noticed this Sportster drag racing forum.
A friend of my dads called when hearing of my purchase and spoke to my wife for a while as I wasn't home. One thing he mentioned is that my dad recorded a quarter mile pass on a sportster in the '70's that still stands as a Sportster best. Could this be true? I believe it was 10.41/148 if memory serves.
I remember the bike. B/fuel I think, beautiful Sonny Roslowski motor, I used to pull him back to the pits with a honda 50.
God bless,
Jeff Smith
P.S. He also built a 45 magnum if you are interested. You can find it at Randysmith.info.

First of all, :welcome Make sure to pop in to the Introduce Yourself section.

Yep - heard of 10 sec Sporty's - your dad's time stands up! There was a great article on a sleeper of a drag Sporty recently that I'll try to dig up - that one was knockin' on the 10 sec door, if I remember right...

Also, check out www.nrhsperformance.com - NRHS is a sponsor here and also specializes in taking Sportys out to the Salt Flats once in a while.

Enjoy the forum!!

That's right. Quite a project I recon.

Looks like it may be the speed that still stands for the Sporty 1/4? Narley is posting some awesome times I see. I could be wrong, but I think my dad may have dipped into the 9's without backing it up if I remember correctly.

Looked like a lot of fun till I saw that 208 mph top fuel ballet/break dance.

Where's that remote?

That is/was a great run. I think John would be the best to reply. he has run a 10.1 on his sporty street legal. He is the fastest I know of all motor street legal.

I don't know much about quarter mile times but I know the winner of the h.p. shootout was 125.9 on an ironhead stroker. That is alot of h.p. and if the stars were alligned I suppose at fast run could be made with a bike like that.

That is movin'! I'm a new rider. How does that compare to the rice burners?
I can tell you, my dad's bike was far from street legal.
You guys can have it. I'd be afraid I might catch some wind under my glove!

have you seen the video of the fella who got some wind under his glove and it lifted his hand free of the grip and thne up exposing his torso and eventually lifting him right off the bike @200 mph?

The street bikes stock are about that fast i think a stock busa is 10.5 ish, but thats stock...a few mods and they are too fast for us -AGAIN_.

Alot of the 1000s are in the upper 9s/low 10s in the mid 140s out of the box. If you're pops was trapping at 148mph that is flat moving, I suspect with modern tires his bike would be in the 9's with that trap speed. Most of the sportbikes running in the mid tens are doing them in the high 120s/low 130s.

That high mph had a lot to do with the nitro talkin' I'm sure. Even so, I was very surprised to hear that a 30+ year old speed for the sporty hadn't been knocked down yet. Wow!
I don't know how many of you were watching bikes at the drags in the 70's, but the bikes weren't hooking up then like they do now. Maybe some of you remember the TriBeezer and other such bikes? You couldn't even see them past half track there was so much tire smoke!
Is it just the tires that have improved since then or has the cluch/tranny improved as well?

Lovin my new XL 1200 C. I come home SO RELAXED after a loop back behind town here in Temecula. After my Sunday ride I literally parked my bike, sat down on the sofa in the garage, and drifted right off into some very sweet dreams, jacket and boots still on.
Now THAT'S a day off!

I have gone a 10.16 e.t. at 134 mph on a street legal sporty last year. Stock wheelbase, foot shifted,no wheelie bar and a street tire. Just went to the track sat. night and went a couple 10.20's the conditions weren't the greatest. I think i should be able to run 10.0's with a little better 60 ft and better conditions, maybe even bust into the 9's with a really good 60 ft and really good conditions with the mods that i did this year

9.9? will bring such a smile...just need that perfect launch....then those perfect shifts...while maintaining that shiftless low body position...while working that throttle wrist to burb ever so slightly for your clutchless shifts....all that of course assuming you had an eagle eye on the tree ...ha...all that on your mind as you leave the line...sheesh ...its easy eh!

Yea you make it sound so easy!! But seriously that is what its going to take if i want to go a 9.9's. I hope it happens but my goal this year is to run 10.0's .

Does appear that the lights and starting line are where most races are won! Don't think I'd like my H-D in currect configuartion on a 10 sec 1/4 mile blast.
Bike's kinda heavy for drag racing but could probably trim down to under 500 lbs I guess. Fuelers are the s^it if your pockets are deep!

:doh Yeah sounds easy ,but last years first race saw me falling apart as i tried too hard to remeber everything at the line.Going into this years first race with zero practice...just going to relax trusting that it will come naturally....that first shift is the tough one as the bike hits the limiter so quick on the bottle after launching at 5500 rpm.....but it will come to me as though I never quit doing it.....And then of course there is my mantra....who is theman ,who is the man....:roflblack
