the owner has never seen my project(73 xlch, paughco rigid frame, paughco springer, etc...)...but has the nerve to tell me to sell it and buy one of his slightly used Big Twin bikes...I was like... ...then :censor ...then more like :frownthre
Now I'm even more determined to build a wild-ass bike that makes muthafu*ka's say DAMN!!!!!!
...(sigh)...just a little rant...I'm off to the shop...let the maddness begin... :headb

screw him, do what ya wanna do and hang with friends that enjoy what you do
i ride with guys with different bikes.....
shovelhead
honda CB750
new V-twin honda
it doesnt bother them what anyone rides nor myself, as long as we ride and go places and see things and always enjoy the company we ride with
when i first met the one guy with the CB750 he asked what i had, i replied....old harley sportster, he said oh man, does it run ok? my honda is always ready, i said oh yea it runs good lets hit the road someday, we did just that and had a great day, ride together all the time now, he likes the "old sportster"
funny thing is the guy with the shovel had nothing but trouble all day and the sporty was fine
some folks are so pre-occupied with "what folks ride" they miss the real point, must suck to be them ;)
rock on with your project and let us see it :smoke

Good for you alabamakid.
They are some many people making BT customs now-a-days that they are all starting to look the same.
Post some pics when you get done...or heck post some of your work in progress.

I'm not a big fan of rigids but last Sunday I hooked up with a guy on a Sportster chopper with a springer and that bike was sharp! I kid you not. We rode together for about 30 mins. and it was hard to keep my eyes on the road as I found myself constantly checking out his bike. Go for it alabamakid!

there is nothing wrong with a big twin , I'd own one if I could , but my heart goes out to sportys and expessialy the ironheads
I have never had the "just a sporty" comment thrown at me but if anyone were to I'd just tell them that its the bike I want , end of story

I think the problem sometimes is that we go to talk bikes and forget the shop owners actually need to sell to stay in business. He can only stay open so long giving out free info and tips. I know he was rude but you might have been the 3 millionth person talking about a project that day. Maybe he was just trying to save you some money. Custom bikes usually cost a lot more then the original budget allowed for. Did you buy anything or just go to talk bikes.

Sounds like it was gonna be dry to boot. I don't think Ebay is helping the indy's cause. I hardly ever buy anything from a shop except gaskets and things I can't get on Ebay. I like your project and I imagine in the end it is gonna be a bnice bobber. Good luck with the build.

if it's a little more expensive to get it from the shop...and I don't want to wait for the item to be shipped, I'll buy from him. He's got a kicker arm that I'm plottin on right now...but if I can find it for 1/2 the price on ebay, v-twin, or Jireh...I gotta keep $ in my pocket too...
This is my 1st HD, so it's all new territory for me...

Problem is most of the time these guys order the part for you aqt twice the price. It is tough to get a deal out there.

I've been feeling the same thing around here. Every time I go to the local shops and ask a question about my 75XLCH, they all look at me like my pecker's hanging out. All they want to cater to is the RUBs and their $50000 coontails. I say screw 'em. As long as I can find the parts and get advice from good bros like the ones on this board, they can stick their billet where the sun don't shine. And the swap meets are turning into mini-easyrider bike shows. What a joke. I actually had a so called shop owner look at my bike and say it looked "rough". WTF? He can take rough and stick it. I'm sorry if I'm running off at the mouth, but I'm drunk and I'm pissed. HELL YEAH!!!!

I hear ya man...the first time I rode my Triumph out to a poker ride, some dude told me, "That's gonna look good when it's finished"...I was like..."It's a chopper...it IS finished...now go buy some official HD doughnuts..."

I feel your pain!!! Everytime I go to a Indy they say "OH, You got a Sportster!! I work on BT's!!!" I guess those dumb-asses don't know how to work on a Sporty!!! :frownthre
So, I save money and do my own work!!!! :clap :clap :clap

I like to do my own work for the simple fact that I can't/won't pay $50-80 per hr for them to do it.
...and I like to know that if(and when) something goes wrong, I can fix it on the spot...
I still support local shops for the most part though...

I got the same load of cr^p from an indy shop here in denver area. (old town arvada to be specific.) the person behind the counter said "you should buy something newer" when i let out that was riding a 76 sporty. so i asked "why?" why SHOULD i get a new big twin when it's not what i want? person took off into the back without answering. Lost my respect and my buisness. Don't Dis da customers, that is, if you want to keep them.

I ride in Southern, CA where Harley image is important to many of the plastic assholes out here. The designer chaps, shirts, etc.
I had a clown on a Dyna Glide C what I percieved as a disrespectful (damn rude) response to my Sporty say some shit. After I found out that the jerk off was a weekend RUB, we had an educational discussion and he putted off like the bitch that he was. I wear a levi jacket, leather vest with my own patches sewn in (US Forrestry patches, Oakland Raiders, In memory of patch) , old levi 501 jeans and my scuffed leather engineer boots and my black hombre half helmet. No designer stuff here.
I ride for me and the memory of those that I have lost. I'm not into the status, designer look. You can tell who is who when it really comes down. I'm an oldschool dude on na new 05 1200 Sporty Custom and she stays right with the big twins and the capatain has the tude.
To hell with them alabamakid. That ride you have is a badass ride with character. I know many oldschoolers (the real bikers) who all loved thier old Ironheads including me. BTW: I cruised an old FXR when I lived in San Luis Obispo, CA (Uncles ride while he was in the joint) and I always prefered my Sporty...

Here Something Different from a Indy!!!
I was coming back from Austin And I've Notice this New Indy Shop Open on IH 35 in San Marcos. I figured what the Hell I'll check it, so I stopped in and looked around the owner asked if he could help me and I replied "no just lookin around" he then asked me what I rode, told him a Sporty, he said "oh ya, I have a '88 Sporty" we then started talkin about Sporty's!!!!
Good Guy and I'll be Back, He even posted a XL Forum Card in his Front Window!!! :clap :clap

That was similar to my exp with the Indy who gets ALL my buisness...he;s old, grey, honest, and likes Sporty's, even though his mount is a FLH Shovel w/ sidecar....him and his partner are WELL versed in Sportster old and new....hell sometimes I even just hang uot there and BS w/ 'em when I have down days at work...never been diss'ed for being a Sporty rider there, really quite the opposite, and R. C. helps me keep my bike if fine tune....sh*t he even lets me pull her into the shop and work on it myself if he has room at the time....ya know shop owners like that seem to attract a good clientell (sp) I even have gotten to know alot of RC's customers as well over the years...and yes there is a XLF card on the bulletin bd and one in the window....Mike
