View Full Version : need info on tach. dump 22nd November 2004, 00:27 i have a 04 1200 c sporty. does anybody know witch of three wires coming out of the coil is the negative wire? i have a tach. i would like to hook up. thanks barry1967 22nd November 2004, 00:34 Let me look in the shop manual and see. Give me a minute. stevo 22nd November 2004, 00:40 The tach signal wire on HD's is the bright pink one...well it is on pre 04 sporties and Evos and Twinkies...so I imagine it'll be the same.. Have a look in your conectors and there should be a bright pink one somewhere.... barry1967 22nd November 2004, 00:41 The factory tach does not connect directly through the coil. It connects to the control modula and main fuse panel. It is a 5 wire connection. O to ignition. Orange? pin # 6 on mian harness LGN/V to datalink pin # 7 on main garness BN/GY to battery pin # 2 on main harness O/W to accessory pin # 1 on main harness BK to ground pin # 12 on main harness 2 of the coil wires goto the module. The 3rd goes to the right hand control. Darhawk 22nd November 2004, 00:59 I don't know if any of this will help, but in the 2005 service manual for the XL1200C, it shows the following: On the ignition coil, 3 wires connect: Yellow/BE, which comes off terminal 7 of the ignition control module to the rear connector of the coil; BE/Orange, which comes off terminal 6 of the ignition control module to the front of the coil; W/Black, which goes from the coil to the right hand control start/stop switch. Stevo should be able to match whether the yellow or orange replaced the pink by noting if the pink comes off the front or rear of the coil on the pre-2004s. Darhawk 22nd November 2004, 01:13 dump By the way, what kind of tach are you wiring in. HD does not have factory tachs for the 2004 & 200 XL1200Cs yet, and according to the factory rep, may not for another year. dump 24th November 2004, 02:46 thanks i have a after market tack. i ordered from custom chrome. it says to hook one wire to the neg. wire one the coil. barry1967 24th November 2004, 23:20 Being that the 04's are single fire and that the 2 of the three leads go to the module I don't know if a standard tach will work. It will only register every other spark. Good luck stevo 25th November 2004, 00:10 G'day as bazza said ya may have trouble with it only reading half....... I think Bruce has an '04 manual....I'll have a look and let ya's know. Trust HD to change it...it's been pink for years barry1967 25th November 2004, 00:15 Bazza? never been called that before ;) stevo 25th November 2004, 00:18 Oz slang for Barry Darren would be Dazza.. Karen = kazza...etc If there is an a as a second letter it often gets abreviated barry1967 25th November 2004, 00:30 Ok, I got it now. I have the '05 1.5" gauges installed on her so I have to widen the bars so the tach will fit beside the speedo. I am installing one made for the '04 so I should not have any problem with it reading properly. stevo 25th November 2004, 13:43 Twinkie = Twin Cam stevo 25th November 2004, 13:45 and yeah I forgot to look up the manual....maybe over the weekend..I've got a few urgent jobs on in the workshop at the mo' that need doin first before I go lookin thru books. |
